Runaway

She looked behind her as she ran down the stairs. Her blonde hair fell into her eyes. But she didn't bother pushing it away, just glared at the person following her. He caught up with her in the hallway and grabbed her wrist. She felt him squeeze hard and gasped.
“Let go of me,” Rachel spat.
“Don’t do this,” Darren begged.
“It’s too late, I’ve put up with your rubbish for long enough,” she frowned. She wasn't lying. She had.
“I don’t mean it,”
“Darren, you never mean it. You can just say sorry every time and expect everything to be okay,"
"But that's all it should take, Rachel,"
"I'm sorry," she shook her head.
"What have I done that's so bad?!" Darren exclaimed.
"What have you done?" she echoed and laughed humourlessly. "You’ve left me alone in strange neighbourhoods. You've locked me out of my own home. You've let your friends assault me. You've involved me in your stupid games. Now you ask me to stay. The answer's no,”
"It isn't as bad as it sounds! You know what I have to do,"
"You don't have to do anything," she sighed in frustration.
"I look after you, Rachel! I protect you,"
"See, the thing is . . . you don't. You call it protecting me. I call it scaring away any guy that likes me,"
"But I don't want anyone to hurt you," Darren tried. He held her face gently and tucked some hair behind her ear. She pulled away from him and bit down on her lip.
"All the guys that have hurt me have been brought to our apartment by you. You're the one that hurts me,"
“We’re family. We have to stay together,” Darren tried.
“Family don’t treat one another like that,” she frowned. “I’m sorry,” she added. She went over to the door. She pulled it open but felt Darren grab her.
“No,” he spat and pulled her roughly away from the doors.
“Let me go,” she sighed.
“I love you, Rach',”
“I love you too. But I can’t stay here,” she said a final time and walked out. She hitched her rucksack higher up on her shoulder. Rachel walked to her old car in their parking space. She got inside and started the engine. Her bag was thrown onto the passenger seat and she pulled out onto the road. In the rear view mirror she could see Darren watching her, but she drove away from him.
Rachel drove and drove, not really knowing where she was going. She just wanted to be as far away from Darren as possible. Once the city had started to thin out she saw the built up blocks had changed into houses. She had somehow turned to drive on a long stretch of road. She kept on driving until there were no houses or even other cars. Just road.
Rachel felt the heat beat down on her and her eyes become tired. She started to breathe faster and the car became slower. She saw a warning light on the dashboard and pulled over. Rachel got out and saw dark smoke coming from the engine. “Damn it,” she breathed and opened the hood. Inside she saw fire and her eyes widened. Her car was literally on fire. She got her bag and got out of the car. Rachel jogged a few steps away. Then she had nothing to do but watch her car burn, miles away from anyone else.
