Believe You Me

April 27th

I woke up and heard Mia crying. I sat up and walked to the nursery, picking her up and she calmed down a little. I walked to the kitchen, rocking her lightly and humming. I walked to the living room, turning on the TV and put on the movie that was on the DVD player. I relaxed as the familiar music began playing of Napoleon Dynamite and I watched it as Mia did too. She seemed to be enjoying it; her brown eyes staring at it and I chuckled, knowing she loved it. I rested my head by hers and she stayed still, watching the movie.

It wasn’t until the sun was up did I notice that I had fallen asleep and Mia did too. I carefully got up, taking her to her crib and I went back to bed. I crawled under the blanket and looked at the empty side next to me. The bed was far too big for me alone and I couldn’t stand it. I needed someone there. I got back up and brought Mia back, resting pillows around the edge and I carefully hugged her, watching as she breathed evenly.

Mia was healthy, even though Julie had the cancer. She was a miracle. I fell asleep again, lost in the sounds of Mia’s breathing. I woke up to a doorbell and saw Mia wiggling on the bed and looking at the ceiling. “Good morning, Mia. Slept fine?” I asked, picking her up. She continued to stare at me and I chuckled, holding her and making my way downstairs when the person knocked again.

“Michael?” I heard Vic’s voice and I rolled my eyes, knowing he was worried.

“Coming!” I called, setting Mia on the baby swing in the living room. “I’m going to force you to like Harry Potter.” I spoke to Mia quickly setting the third movie in the DVD player and running to the front door where I could hear Jaime screaming for me to open the door. I opened it, seeing him glare at me.

“You kept me waiting so you can put on that horrible movie for my niece?” Jaime asked, barging in and taking her from the baby swing. Mia stared at him with a blank expression and I shook my head, inviting Vic in also.

“Tony should be here in a bit. He woke up with a headache.” Vic explained. I nodded, hearing house phone rang. I walked over and answered.

“Mike, Dr. Evans here, we have Julie in a stable condition. Why don’t you stop by in two hours or so to see her?” I grinned, thanking Dr. Evans and going to see Vic and Jaime with Mia.

“The surgery went fine, Julie’s going to be okay.” I grinned at Jaime and Vic. They cheered and Mia continued to stare at them. I walked over to her and picked her up.

“Come on baby, let’s doll you up for mommy.” Mia looked at me and, as if knowing what I said, she grinned and waved her small fists.

“She has no teeth!” Jaime cooed, walking to her and softly pinching her cheeks. I laughed, seeing Vic run over and both of them trying to make Mia laugh again.

“Alright guys, let me get her ready and we’ll go see my wife and your mommy.” I grinned at Mia and she smiled again. I showered her and dressed her, playing peek-a-boo but she went back to her serious face. I walked downstairs seeing Jaime eating my food while Vic was texting on his phone.

“Ready?” I asked, waking to the car seat and setting her in it. I secured the belts and we all walked to the car, getting in and Jaime buckled the car seat in the back seat sitting next to her.

“Going to see Julie?” I turned my head from the front seat, seeing Casey getting in on Mia’s other side and buckling himself.

“Yeah, Dr. Evans called that everything went smoothly.” I answered.

“Hold on then, Tony just got here, unlock the trunk.” Vic said. I unlocked it and the trunk opened, Tony jumping in and waved at us.

“Road trip?” He asked.

“To see Julie.” Jaime answered.

The car ride was quiet and it was relaxing. I was anxious to see her and with every passing minute, I wanted to just speed over. We arrived at the hospital and I we all walked in to see Julie. She was fast asleep in the bed; tubes in her nose and wires around her everywhere. We all sat by, waiting for her to wake up but she didn’t. Visiting hours were over and I stayed behind with Mia, lying on the bed and carefully placing her between Julie and me.

“I told you mommy was going to be fine.” I smiled at Mia and she waved her small fists in the air, smiling. I chuckled and wrapped my arm around both my girls, falling fast asleep.
