Believe You Me

Maybe it was you all along

I sat in the airport terminal by myself, waiting to board my flight. I was running away from my problems, typical. I wasn't strong enough to face them, I was weak. I was a coward.

My phone rang for the second time in less than a minute, and I picked it up, seeing it was Jaime calling again. I sighed and hit ignore, dropping my phone back into my purse. Right after I did, however, it pinged, notifying me of a new text. I fished it out of my purse and debated on opening it. When I saw Tony's name on the screen though, I hesitantly opened it.

From:TonyTurtle
I know what you're doing. Vic called. I'm not going to try to talk you out of it, but please call me.

I clicked on his name and called him, each ring of the dial tone making me more and more anxious. I was worried he was mad at me, and him being mad at me was the last thing I wanted in this world. He finally answered, but didn't say anything right away.

"Tony?" I questioned.

"Hold on a second." He muttered into the phone. I heard a breeze blow into the phone a door slide shut as he stepped outside. "Sorry," he breathed a few seconds later "I don't want Jaime knowing I'm talking to you right now."

"Does he know?" I said quietly into the speaker.

"He doesn't know where you're going, but he knows you're gone. He went to your room to talk to you, but all your stuff was gone. I had to act like I didn't know what was going on. He's going to find out sooner or later though, you know Vic's awful at keeping secrets."

"I hope that's the only secret he lets slip.." I murmured, but luckily I don't think Tony didn't heard me.

"Eve... Vic only told me that you were going back to Orlando to get away... but what's really going on? I know it's more than that."

"Tone...." I groaned. "It's complicated. I really don't even know where to begin."

"Believe me, it's not really as complicated as you think it is..." He muttered, but I chose to ignore it.

"Now boarding flight 378 to Orlando." A voice loomed in the distance. I sighed into the phone and set it up on my shoulder. I gathered my bags together and got ready to get on my flight.

"Look Tony, I've got to go..." I began, but stopped when I heard the door open in the background over the phone. I heard Tony mutter a 'shit' under his breath, and I immediately knew that Jaime was out there with him now.

"Is that Eve?" Jaime said in the background, his voice mixed with emotions. "You've got to let me talk to her, Tony, please." He pleaded. I debated hanging up right then and there, but before I could make up my mind, Jaime already had the phone. "Eve, where are you? Where are you going? Why are you doing this?" He spat out, his questions jumbling together. "Is it because of me...?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Hime... I'm going to my parent's. I need to get away. I need a break from everything that's happened. I need a break from you..." I said quietly, my voice cracking.

"Don't you say that, Eve, don't you say anything like that." His voice broke. "I need you Evelyn, you're my best friend, you can't leave me right now... I need you. Please Evelyn, please don't do this. I love you. I need you." I could tell he was crying, and that sent my heart straight to the floor.

"I can't Jaime... I just can't. I'm sorry." I said and hung up the phone.

"Last call for flight 378 to Orlando." I wiped away the tears behind my eyes and picked up my bags, walking to the gate to board my flight.

********

I stood outside of my parents house in the rain, my bags in hand. The last time I had been back here was a few years ago for Thanksgiving, and I really hadn't seen my parents much since then. I took a breath and walked up to the door, setting my bags down and knocking gently. "Coming!" my mom shouted in the distance. The door opened a few seconds later, and my mom was standing there with a shocked expression on her face. "Evelyn! Oh my goodness honey, you're here!" My mom exclaimed, enveloping me in a hug.

"Hi mom, it's good to see you too." I laughed, squeezing her back.

"Come inside sweetie, let's get you out of the rain." She picked up my bags and carried them inside, setting them down once we got in. I looked around the house, admiring the way everything was. There were pictures of my brother and I hung all over the tan walls, along with useless decorations that my mom had hung up. The house was spotless, as my clean freak of a dad liked to have everything in it's place. I looked back at my mom, who was smiling a crooked smile at me. "I'm so glad to see you, I can't believe you're actually here! And you finally got rid of that awful pink hair, thank goodness." She gushed. I couldn't help but smile back at her. Seeing my mom almost made all of my worries disappear.

"Sorry to pop in unannounced, I hope it's not a problem." I took a seat on the couch, while my mom took a seat on the adjoining one.

"Of course not! You're always welcome, you know that. You're my daughter for Christ's sake." She said. "Do you want anything to drink or to snack on?"

"Uhm, just some coffee would be fine. It's been a long day." I sighed with a small smile.

"I bet, that's quite a bit of a flight from California to here. What time did your flight leave?" She called out from the kitchen once she was in there.

"A little after 2." I glanced at the clock, seeing that it was already 9pm. I sighed, knowing that I was going to suffer from some jetlag for the next few days, the downside of traveling from California to Florida.

"Oh goodness, you poor thing, you're going to be jetlagged." My mom said, as if she had read my mind. She came back in carrying two mugs of coffee and handed me mine. "So why are you here, baby? There's got to be a reason, because I know you wouldn't come just to visit your dear old mom."

"Jeez mom, you almost know me too well." I laughed, sipping my coffee and setting it down.

"It's my job as your mother. So, spill it."

"God mom, it's so complicated." I started at the beginning, with running into Austin and almost kissing him at the party. I told her about the date and kissing him, but feeling nothing. She teared up when I told her about Vic, but stayed quiet, not interrupting. I explained everything, including having sex with Austin and my feelings for Jaime. I finished and picked my coffee back up, taking a sip. My mom set hers down and sat back, sighing deeply.

"That's quite a mess you've gotten yourself into, sweetie." She stated bluntly. "Do you want my honest opinion?"

"Duh, you know I do." I said, rolling my eyes.

"Well to me dear, it sounds like you're using Austin as someone to keep your mind off of your feelings for Jaime. You can't do that, hun, it's not fair to you or Austin. Have you tried talking to Jaime at all?" She picked back up her coffee and finished it off.

"I can't do that mom, you don't understand. We've been friends for years, you know that. I'm afraid of ruining what we have. He's my best friend, I don't want to risk what we have." I left out the part of not feeling good enough or him, not wanting to hear her lecture about self love.

"How do you know he doesn't feel the same for you?" She said, raising an eyebrow. I scoffed at her response.

"Yeah, right. After he brought back that blonde and fucked her in the middle of all of this? Okay, mom." I said, my voice thick with anger.

"But isn't that exactly what you did?" She said. "Listen dear, I don't mean to upset you, but you've got to look at this situation in a different light. Try to understand that maybe it's you who is in the wrong here." She stood up and grabbed both of our mugs. "I need to head to bed, I've got to go to the airport early in the morning to pick up your father." She kissed me lightly on the forehead. "I'm glad you're here though, despite the situation that brought you here. There's sheets in the closet of your old bedroom, you can stay in there. Goodnight, sweetie." She took our mugs into the kitchen and headed to her bedroom.

I pulled out my phone and turned it back on, seeing if I had any messages. I grabbed a blanket it while it was turning on and switched the TV on, settling on an old Sci-fi movie to watch. My phone started to vibrate with new messages, and I checked to see who they were from. There were a few from Austin, telling me again that he had a good time this morning and wanted to see me again. I sighed and deleted his texts. My mom was right, I was just using him, and I felt awful about it. I looked at my other texts, seeing a few from Jaime and Tony. I chose to ignore them and put my phone back away. I focused my attention on the movie and curled up on the couch, eventually drifting off to sleep.

********

I woke up to pounding on the door, and I was extremely confused. I checked my phone to see that it was 2 in the morning. I got up with my blanket still wrapped around me, confused and angry that someone was pounding on the door at two in the morning. I unlocked the door and opened it, not prepared for what I was about to see. Standing in front of me was a soaking wet Jaime. His hair was glued to his face from the rain, and his eyes were swollen and red like he'd been crying nonstop.

"Jaime..." I whispered, my hands dropping the blanket wrapped around me. I stepped outside and closed the door behind me, not wanting to wake my mom up. "What are you doing here?" I called out over the rain that was still pouring.

"I need to see you, Eve, I need to tell you this." He said, pushing the hair out of his face. "Evelyn, you're my best friend, but you're also more than that. You're the one that makes me happiest, you're the reason that I smile, the reason that I laugh. I live for the moments that you climb into my bed begging to cuddle, and having my arms wrapped around you, keeping you all to myself. I don't know where I'd be without you, Eve. You're the most important person in my life. I love you Evelyn, in more ways than you could ever imagine." He stared into my eyes, waiting for a reaction. My mind raced and I began to cry at his words.

"Jaime, I can't! I can't love you! I'm not good for you! I'm a wreck, I don't deserve love and I definitely don't deserve you. Why can't you see that?" I choked out, wrapping my arms around myself. His eyes flickered with pain, and tears fell softly down his face.

"Evelyn, no. You've never been so wrong in your life. If anybody is undeserving, it's me. You're beautiful, you're smart, and you're the absolute best person I've ever met in my life. You're so sweet and genuine, nothing in this world comes even close to meaning what you do to me. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. You're the only thing I want in this life." A sob escaped my throat and I rushed into his arms, throwing mine around his waist. He pulled me tight against him and stroked my hair, letting me cry into him. He pulled me away and laid a hand gently on my cheek, stroking it gently. He gazed into my eyes, smiling softly. "I love you, Evelyn. I always have." Jaime whispered. He leaned in slowly and kissed me softly. The soft peck deepened and our lips moved together in sync. My head was spinning and my heart raced, my stomach filling with butterflies. I reluctantly pulled away from the kiss and gazed deeply into his brown eyes. "I love you too, Jaime."
