Drella

She Sits Up High

I stormed out of my history class and yawned. As I slumped against the wall I heard a snap. I looked down and saw all of my things from my bag on the floor. I groaned loudly and bent down to pick everything up. As I gathered my things I heard laughing. I saw Frankie and Daniel standing over me.
"Can I help you?" I snapped.
"You're doing a great job," Frankie smirked.
"It's funny how you're horrible to me now I'm friends with the only decent person in our year," I said without looking up.
"You could have ended up like me," she shrugged.
"A bitch, with a jock's tongue stuck down my throat?" I shot back.
"Hey, Young," the Daniel snapped. I rolled my eyes as I stood up. But someone was at my side.
"Why you talking to her like that?" Mike asked sharply. I smiled to him in thanks.
"I can stick up for myself," I told him.
"He still hasn't answered my question," Mike glared.
"Forget it," Daniel shook his head.
"What's going on?" Vic asked. I hadn't even realised he'd arrived.
"Now the whole gang is here," Frankie said dryly.
"We're done here," I said easily.
"Really?" Daniel laughed.
"She doesn't want you here so fuck off," Vic spat. Mike and I both looked at him before we started laughing. Frankie walked away, with Daniel following her. I turned to Vic and pulled him in for a hug.
"Check you out," I giggled.
"Shut up," he rolled his eyes.
"You're the best thing for my big bro since sliced bread," Mike grinned and clapped Vic on the shoulder before he jogged away.
"Come on, we're going to get my nose pierced," I urged.
"We are?"
"Yes," I laughed as I dragged him out of the school.
"Why?"
"Because I want it done but I'm scared and I don't have a car,"
"Okay, but then we're going to the record store,"
"Deal," I confirmed.
We walked over to Vic's car and I got inside. He switched on the engine and it started up the rap CD that was in the player. I looked at him with raised eyebrows.
"Before you say anything, Mike took over this morning," he defended.
"I think you just love rap, Victor,"
"Victor," he replied and frowned. "I don't like it when you call me by my full name,"
"Get used to it. One day people will be screaming it!"
"Yeah right,"
"Right," I nodded. "Now let's put Pantera on so we can car mosh,"
"We can what?" he laughed.
"Mosh. Like in a mosh pit at a concert. But in a car," I explained.
"Oh," he nodded.
"You San Diego folk aren't very clever," I muttered.
"You want to walk?" he teased.
"I'm good, thank you," I smiled politely. He shook his head a little as he drove.
He pulled up outside a tattoo shop and I looked out excitedly. I got outside and pulled him with me to the door. Vic pushed it open and we went to the desk. "I've got a piercing appointment," I told the woman behind the desk.
"Okay, if you both want to go through," she smiled. I grabbed Vic's hand and bit my lip. He pulled me along to the room. I went inside and a middle aged guy smiled at me.
"Drella, right?" he asked.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"And Vic?" he asked.
"Um . . . Yeah," Vic said awkwardly.
"Do you want to sit down in the chair? You can show her there's nothing to be scared of," the guy smiled.
"What?" Vic frowned. "I'm not getting mine done,"
"That's what I've got written down here,"
"I may have booked you," I said guiltily.
"No, Drella," Vic shook his head.
"Please, I don't want to get it done on my own," I begged.
"Drella," he groaned.
"Do this for me, Vic,"
"You owe me," he widened his eyes. Vic sat down in the chair and the guy got everything ready. I saw him put the needle to Vic's nose and I gasped. It went through and the guy changed it for a silver piercing.
"Are you okay?" I rushed.
"Fine," he smiled lightly.
"Did it hurt?"
"Not at all," Vic got up and urged me over to the chair. I sat down and breathed out nervously. I closed my eyes as the guy got ready and felt the cold needle touch my nose. Then it went through and my eyes opened.
"Fuck!" I exclaimed loudly. The guy put a piercing in and I whined.
"All done," the guy smiled.
"You said you were fine," I groaned as I collapsed against Vic. "You said it didn't hurt,"
"I lied," he replied easily. We walked out and to the desk. I paid for both of us and we went outside to Vic's car.
"My nose hurts," I complained.
"So does mine,"
"Promise to keep it in forever," I said.
"I promise,"
"Pinky promise," I smiled and held my pinky out.
"You are such a kid," he laughed. "I pinky promise," he said and curled his pinky around mine.
"You should grow your hair out more. You'd have all the girls after you, Vic,"
"You think?" he teased.
"I know," I rolled my eyes. "What time is it?" I asked as we started driving.
"Four - fifteen,"
"Shit," I breathed.
"When are you supposed to be home?"
"Four," I groaned.
"Is your mom at work?"
"Not today," I sighed. We drove until we pulled up outside my house.
"Call me if you need me," Vic told me.
"I will," I smiled. I hugged Vic and then hurried out to my house. I walked inside and tried to go to my room.
"Drella," Mom snapped. I sighed and walked through into the sitting room.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Why are you late?" she asked, then she looked at me. "What have you done?!" she spat.
"It's just a piercing," I rolled my eyes.
"That you didn't ask permission for,"
"I'm sorry. I wanted it,"
"It's happening again, isn't it?" she sighed angrily.
"What's happening?"
"New York. You're wearing those stupid wristbands again and now you've wrecked your face," she rushed.
"What happened in New York isn't happening. Besides, there was nothing wrong with how I was there,"
"Have you got in with the wrong friends again?" she asked seriously.
"It's nothing to do with my friends," I snapped. "You don't have a clue about them. You've never even met them and you don't even know their names,"
"That isn't my fault,"
"Did you ever consider maybe it isn't my friends that are the problem? That just maybe it's me. This is who I am," I said desperately.
"It isn't who you are!"
"How the fuck would you know?!" I growled. "You're always at work. And you know what? I don't even care," I spat.
"Don't you dare!"
"You don't care. You never have. I could disappear and you wouldn't even notice. You never used to notice!"
"Be quiet!" she snarled and turned away from me. I wiped my eyes and watched her walk away. She always did this.
I ran out of the sitting room and grabbed my bag. I slammed the front door behind me as I ran out. I started to walk down the street. I saw a tree on a stretch of green. I started to climb and only stopped when I was level to the second story windows of the houses across the street and could feel the sun warm my skin. The trees are different here than in New York. But they're still the only place I feel safe. The only place I want to go.
