Drella

I'll Fight For You

I heard the last bell. I've been here one week and I still find the bells strange. They have a different ring to them than in New York. I walked out of my class and saw Vic being followed again by someone. I think his name was Kurt. I narrowed my eyes at him. I'm so sick of this, I just wish they'd leave Vic alone.
"Hey Fuentes!" he yelled and I cringed. I hurried over and passed Kurt. Then I laced my fingers with Vic's. He looked up but smiled when he saw me.
"Hey," I grinned.
"Hi Drella,"
"Why do they pick on you?" I asked once we were outside.
"I don't know," he shrugged. "I like different music and I dress different. And I don't have any friends,"
"You do," I frowned.
"I don't,"
"You have me," I told him. "I'm your friend,"
"Thanks," he said lightly. "Um . . . Drella?"
"Yes?"
"Do you want to come to my house?"
"Okay," I nodded.
"Do you need to ask your mom?"
"No, she isn't back until ten again tonight," I shrugged.
"Oh, how come?" he asked as he took me over to his car.
"She's a doctor at the hospital. She works long shifts," I replied. He nodded in understanding and we got into the car. "What music do you have?" I asked as he started driving.
"You probably won't like it," he sighed, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Stop being silly," I laughed. I opened the glove box and searched through his CD's. Green Day. Blink 182. Pantera.
"What do you think?"
"You like Blink?" I asked excitedly.
"Yeah," he smiled. I took the disk out and out it in the player. The first track started and I turned it up. "I didn't think you'd like this kind of music,"
"How come?"
"I don't know," he shrugged.
"Have you ever met them?"
"No," he shook my head. "I'd love to though,"
"I met Mark. He was so cool,"
"Really? Was it in New York?"
"Yeah," I nodded. "One day I'll take you,"
"I'll never get to go,"
"One day you'll get to go everywhere," I told him easily.
"Promise?" he asked, looking at me.
"I swear," I grinned and held my pinky finger out to him. He waited until he parked up and wrapped his pinky finger around mine.
"This is my house," he said. I got out of the car and looked up. It was average size for San Diego.
"You live close to school," I noted.
"I know. But I love my car so much, I just have to drive it,"
"Come give me a tour of your room," I urged. Vic walked in front of me and opened up. I walked in behind him and looked around. I was standing in a hallway leading through to a kitchen. I followed him through and saw a woman in the kitchen putting groceries away.
"Hi Mom," Vic said and walked over. He kissed her cheek and she smiled fondly at him.
"Who's this?" she asked.
"Drella. She's a friend from school," he explained.
"I don't remember Vic talking about you,"
"I just moved here from New York City. I've only been here a week," I explained.
"It's lovely to meet you," she smiled.
"You too," I replied.
"Ella es muy bonita," his mom told him.
"We're going to go to my room," Vic quickly said. He led me out into the hall and up a set of stairs. We stopped outside a door and he pushed it open. I walked in and looked around. There were posters covering the walls and I spotted a guitar in the corner.
"You play?" I smiled.
"Yeah, I'm probably no good though," he laughed.
"Bet you are," I nudged him. "I like your room," I added.
"Thanks," he grinned. I went over to a couch he had in his room and sat down.
"What did your mom mean?" I asked.
"About what?" he frowned as he joined me.
"When she spoke to you in Spanish,"
"Oh, she said you're pretty,"
"Really?" I beamed. "I expected her to be more Mexican,"
"Why?" he laughed.
"I don't know," I shrugged.
"How's your first week been?"
"I've found the most awesome person in San Diego,"
"Frankie?" he teased.
"Not Frankie," I rolled my eyes. "You should come to my house this weekend,"
"Really?"
"Yeah. But I'm making you take me home tonight because I have no idea where I am," I admitted lightly.
"Sure," he nodded.
"My mom is working all weekend too,"
"Okay," he said. "What about your dad?"
"He's in New York,"
"Sorry," Vic muttered.
"It's cool," I told him. I felt Vic take my hand and I looked up. He was smiling at me and squeezed my hand.
"How come you left New York?" he asked carefully.
"Don't you have a theory," I scrunched up my face.
"I don't listen to rumours,"
"I burnt down a building," I said anxiously, biting my lip.
"What? Like set fire to it?"
"I was smoking with some friends. They all left but I wasn't finished. I threw my butt down and walked away. It wasn't out properly and the building caught fire. I was the last one seen there so I got blamed for it,"
"That sucks,"
"It's okay. I think I like it here," I replied. "Can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead,"
"Why don't you have any friends, Vic? You're such a nice guy and so funny and sweet. I want you to be my best friend,"
"I don't know," he sighed. "I used to be friends with these two twins and their cousin. But the whole family moved states. After that people just started picking on me,"
"Why don't you fight back when they're mean to you? It's not like you couldn't take them on,"
"You sound like Mike," he sighed.
"Mike's right," I told him.
"He's really happy that we're friends you know,"
"Good, because I'm not going anywhere, Fuentes,"
"Thanks Drella," he said.
Then the door opened. We both looked over and I saw who must be Mike. I smiled over at him and he waved. "How was detention?" Vic asked casually.
"Boring," he shrugged. "You must be Drella,"
"I am," I nodded. "Guessing you're Mike,"
"Yeah," he nodded. "Mom was right. You are pretty," he said, looking me over.
"I saw you on my first day," I replied.
"I was probably doing something I shouldn't,"
"You were about to kick some jock's ass," I laughed.
"Sounds like me," he grinned. "This was in my room, Vic," Mike said and threw a notebook over to him. It landed in between Vic and I. The door closed once Mike had winked and left. I looked over at Vic.
"Your brother is such a flirt," I laughed.
"Oh I know," Vic rolled his eyes.
"What's this?" I asked, picking up the notebook.
"Mine,"
"Can I look at it?"
"You tell no one,"
"Thank you," I smiled. I started to flick through it. I read the words and stopped. "Are these song lyrics?"
"Yeah," he nodded.
"Look at my talented best friend," I poked him. "Do you sing?"
"I can't sing," he said and shook his head.
"I bet you can," I urged again.
"My voice is too high. It sounds so stupid,"
"Sing for me," I begged.
"No," he shook his head laughing.
"Viiiiiiiiiic!" I whined and shook his arm.
"Maybe another day,"
"You better," I nudged him with my foot. "Hey, where's your bathroom?"
"Just down the hall," he said. I got up and walked over to the door. I found the bathroom down the hall and went inside.
When I finished I stepped out into the hall and into Mike.
"Hey," I smiled.
"Mom wants to know if you want to stay for dinner?"
"Sure," I nodded.
"Drella?"
"Yes?" I asked.
"Thanks for cheering my brother up,"
"What do you mean?"
"He's just been down for a while. But he's been really happy this week," Mike explained.
"No problem," I said. I walked back to Vic and saw him sitting on the couch still. I hope he's happy.
