Fuentes Girl

At Least I've Got Real Friends

It dawned on me as I was trying to find something to wear for my first day of high school that I have no idea what girls my age in America wear. It could be completely different to back home. I can’t wear a jacket because of this stupid sun. I heard a knock on my door and my head shot up. “Yeah?!” I called.
“It’s Mike,” he replied. I sighed and went over to open the door. He smiled at me and I frowned. “Are you okay, Effy?” he asked seriously. “I know this weekend must have been a bit full on.”
“It was fine,” I shrugged. “All we did was go shopping.”
“And you got lost."
“It’s fine.” I repeated.
“What is it then? You look flustered.”
“I need help.” I said desperately.
“Okay." he said seriously and sat at the window seat.
“I don’t know what to wear.”
“Seriously,” he rolled his eyes. I glared and he chuckled. “Okay, okay,” he said defensively. “What do you normally wear on weekends?”
“Anything.” I shrugged.
“There you go then. You need to hurry up by the way.”
“I thought Vic was taking me?”
“He’s got a meeting. I’ll be taking you. So hurry up.”
“Sure.” I smiled.
Mike got up and left. I closed the door and went to my wardrobe. I pulled on some black jeans and a crop top. I put my sandals and finished my hair and make-up. I sighed and went downstairs. I saw Mike in the hall and met him.
“Ready, Ef?”
“Yeah.” I nodded.
We went out to the car and I got in the front seat. Mike started driving and I looked out of the window.“You know this was my high school.”
“Really?” I widened my eyes.
“I got into some shit.”
“Like what?” I grinned.
“I’m not telling you.”
“Please.”
“Vic will kill me.”
“Mike,” I urged. “You wasn’t a dealer, were you?”
“No! What screwed up school did you go to in England?” he laughed.
“I was joking,” I rolled my eyes. “Please, I’ll tell you one of mine.”
“Fine,” he sighed. “While in my senior year I got into a total of thirty three fights.”
“Wow, you've got me beat.” I breathed.
“What’s your story?” he asked as he pulled into the car park.
“Oh,” I muttered and thought. “One time I threw a chair at this boy.”
“Why?”
“He threw a stapler at me.”
“Ahh.” Mike nodded in understanding.
“Don’t tell Vic, please.”
“Your secrets safe. Any problems just call me.”
“Thanks Mike. You’re cool.”
“You too." he smiled.
I opened the door and got out. I started inside the building and walked through corridors. I saw a reception and headed for it. I stopped in front of the desk and a woman looked up.
“Yes?” she asked brightly.
“Hi, I’m Elizabeth Walker. It’s my first day.”
“One moment,” she told me. She started typing on her computer and I leant against the desk. “Here’s your schedule and forms you have to sign.” she said and handed me them.
“Thanks.” I said and went to turn.
“And have a nice day.”
“Okay." I nodded.
I walked out and looked down at my timetable or schedule as the Americans call it. I had English first period. At least that’s the same. I looked at the bottom of my schedule and found my locker. I found it and tried to put the code in. It wouldn’t open and I sighed angrily. “What’s so wrong with carrying your bag?” I huffed. I looked around and saw a girl by her locker. “Excuse me, could you give me a hand?” I asked awkwardly.
“Sure.” she nodded. She looked at my code and began to open my locker. I sighed in relief.
“Thank you. You just saved my life.” I breathed.
“You’re not from SD.”
“No, Birmingham.”
“I know it.”
“In England.” I added.
“Oh okay, I don’t know it.” she laughed.
“I’m Effy by the way.” I introduced myself.
“I’m Paris.”
“Nice name, I’ve been there,” I nodded. “So, Paris. Tell me you have English first.”
“I actually have.” she laughed.
“Can you take me?” I begged.
“Come on.” Paris urged.
We started walking and reached the class. I walked inside with Paris and took a seat near the back. Paris sat next to me and I smiled. The teacher came into view and started going over things. We were studying Romeo and Juliet. At least I know it.
Ten minutes into class the door opened. I saw a group of boys enter and smiled. One caught my eye out of the four. He had dark hair and was wearing skinny jeans. I could see a tattoo on his wrist. He looked at me and I looked down again.
“Sorry?” the boy tried.
“First day, guys. It’s all I ask,” the teacher sighed. “Go sit down and I’ll see you after.” The boys started walking to the back where there were four seats left.
“Looking very goth today, Paris. I like it.” one of the guys commented. Now I looked closer I could see he was wearing a Pierce The Veil t-shirt. This was odd.
“You too, although you overdid the eyeliner,” she mocked. I looked at her and she laughed. “They’re my best friends.” she told me discreetly.
“Who’s this?” the boy with the dark hair asked.
“This is Effy. It’s her first day.” Paris explained.
“Does that call for a welcome party Thursday night?”
“Why Thursday?” I asked.
“Thats when my brother works at a club in town. He lets us in and gets us drinks.” he explained.
“As long as they’re cheap.” I said smoothly.
“My kind of girl," he laughed. "Oh, I’m Matt. And this is Kyle, Davie and Josh.” he told me.
“You already know my name.” I smiled.
When the lesson was over I looked down at the timetable. I had Music. Stupid musicians.

I know it's horrible but shit like this happens. I know people who have lost trials when the truth was obvious. I even know someone who got arrested for GBH and didn't get charged because his girlfriend and her people told too many lies. Hopefully it's believable though because this stuff does happen... :(
