Innocent Blood

Chapter 38: "But She's Crying"

Someone shook my shoulders. “Vic, wake up,” she whispered. “Wake up, Vic,” she shook my shoulders again. My eyes creaked open, meeting bold, brown ones.

“Hi,” I croaked.

“Oh, good,” she sighed in relief.

“What is it?”

“I just wanted to make sure you were okay,” she said. “You seemed like you were in a pretty deep sleep. It scared me,” she said quietly. I nodded, understanding.

“Shit, I’m sorry, Lissy,” I closed my eyes again and shook my head.

“Stop apologizing, Vic,” she said.

“No, it was so stupid to do,” I whispered, my face burning in embarrassment at my dramatics. I opened my eyes again and sat up, sighing into my hands. Then, I looked her straight in her eyes. “Lissy, I don’t want to die,” I said.

“I know you don’t,” she said.

“But I—”

“Vic, I know you don’t. You were just triggered badly,” she said understandingly.

“I didn’t have to be so dramatic about it though,” I muttered.

“Don’t worry too much over it, please, okay?”

“What happens if something triggers me, and I don’t have you or someone to stop me or help me?” I asked in a small voice.

“We’ll work on it, okay? I don’t know,” she said.

“I didn’t think I was still that unstable…” I bit my lip. “It’s like what you said the other day. I get in these impulsive moods, and then when I calm down I regret it, y’know? I just get so caught in the moment, and once I relax I realize how stupid I was being,” I mumbled.

“I know. It’s okay,” she said softly.

“Don’t let me get out of control again, Lis,” I whispered, burying my face into her neck. Suddenly, I realized that I was unraveling rapidly—ever since Bree left me. I shook the realization out of my head.

“We’ll help each other,” she said softly, petting the back of my head. I nodded, pressing my face deeper into the bare skin of her neck.

“I’m sorry for Tony, Vic,” she said.

“I understand why he got mad,” I said.

“What he did and what he said was not excusable, though,” she said.

“Imagine how it looked to him, though,” I said softly, sitting up. I rubbed my hands up and down my face and fixed my wild and messy hair.

“He could have let you explain yourself, though. There was no reason he had to be a fucking asshole,” she crossed her arms over her chest and furrowed her eyebrows.

I scrunched my mouth a little and sighed. “We should probably go check on him. He’s probably really mad at himself,” I said.

Lissy let out a soft laugh and a gentle smile. “Even though he hurt you, you still care about him. You really are the sweetest, Vic,” she said, patting my hand. “I don’t understand how people could hate you,” she added lowly.

I smiled weakly at her. “I don’t understand how people could hate you,” I said, my face evolving into a grimace. She returned the grimace briefly, but then her face relaxed.

“It doesn’t matter,” she muttered. “Maybe I’ll go talk to Tony,” she said.

“Wait, Lissy, don’t you have school?” I asked.

She laughed. “I’m not going to school today,” she shrugged her shoulders.

I shrugged my shoulders, too, not really fazed by her decision to play hooky. “Fine with me,” I smiled. “What time is it?”

“One,” she said.

“Oh, I’ve been sleeping for a while, then,” I said quietly. She nodded slowly, looking down.

“I’m really sorry, Lissy,” I whispered, gently lifting her chin up with my fingers.

She looked at me sadly, but then gave me another look: a stop saying sorry look.

I tucked some hair behind her ear and smiled softly at her. I leaned forward and placed my lips onto hers gently. I liked the way they felt when they were together.

“Okay, I’m going to talk with Tony, now,” she said, sliding out of bed. I nodded and got out, too, stretching out my sore limbs. I took a ragged breath, pushing through the pain in my ribs.

“Shit, Vic, are you okay?” I jumped slightly when Alyssa softly touched my side. “Sorry,” she said quietly, but she kept her hand rested on my sore spot.

“I’m okay,” I nodded.

“Do you want, like, Advil or something?” she asked.

“I can’t take off the counter drugs with my meds,” I said.

“Oh, so you’ll just have to be in pain, I guess,” she said.

“I’m a tough guy,” I smirked.

“I bet you are,” she rolled her eyes. “Do you want to talk to Tony with me?”

“I don’t want to gang up on him,” I said. She nodded, agreeing.

“Okay, I’ll go, then. You can go and, uh, do whatever,” she said.

“I’ll make lunch or something,” I said.

“Don’t bother. You probably suck,” she stuck her tongue out at me.

I rolled my eyes at her but threw my arms around her neck, pretending to choke her. “Take it back.”

She giggled. “No, I stand my ground,” she said fiercely. I squeezed my arms a little tighter in response, causing her to laugh more.

“Ugh, can you not?” Tony suddenly walked by, and I immediately straightened up and dropped my arms. He glared at us, and my face burned. Alyssa, on the other hand, glared angrily back at her brother and then sneakily took my hand in hers, squeezing it for reassurance.

“Screw you, Tony,” she said.

“Lissy, no,” I mumbled. “I’ll let you guys talk,” I mumbled, releasing her hand and squeezing my way past Tony awkwardly in the hallway. Before I could get by, though, Tony grabbed my arm. He mumbled the words “I’m sorry” into my ear, and I nodded, appreciating the gesture but not necessarily feeling great to be around him at the moment.

As soon as I turned the corner, I already heard them beginning to talk things out. I continued to walk towards the kitchen, but I flinched when their conversation quickly escalated into yells.

“You can’t say that Tony!” she yelled.

“And why not?” he yelled back.

“You can’t try to protect me from someone who isn’t even dangerous! God damn it Tony!” she yelled.

Their voices quieted down again, so I curiously inched closer to them, sneaking around the corner so I was out of sight but in a good hearing range.

“I’m sorry,” Tony said quietly. “He’s not dangerous, I know. I don’t know why I said that… I just don’t want him to take you away from me,” he mumbled.

“Tony? I'm not going anywhere,” she said gently. “And… And wh-who are you to say that? You’re being a hypocrite, Tony,” her voice returned to the stubborn voice that I have become quite familiar, and fond, of.

“I said I was sorry for that,” Tony said.

“Tony, I know we didn’t have the best relationship before, but it still hurts,” she said quietly.

“How is what I did any better than what Vic did earlier?” Tony began to raise his voice again. He had a point.

“The difference is Vic didn’t actually want to do that. The difference is that he actually cared the minute he made the mistake,” she said angrily. Tony was quiet.

“You can’t just waltz back into my life and act like everything’s okay, Tony,” she continued. “You can’t just act like you own me now, when you haven’t been here for me ever!” she yelled.

“I’m sorry, Alyssa! Okay? I just want my sister back!”

“I never left,” she growled. “You’re the one who tried to leave me! You’re the one who wanted to go! I know you were in a bad place, Tone, I understand and I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well,” her voice softened. “But I just wish you would have thought of us before,” she said even quieter. “I’m not saying you are selfish. I think you’re strong and I love you, but it still hurts. I can’t help it that it hurts,” she cried softly.

“I'm so sorry, Lissy. I’m so sorry I’ve hurt you,” he said. “I don’t know how to make it up,” he said lowly.

“Just be there for me. And stop being a dick to Vic,” she said. I couldn’t help but smile softly.

“It’s not right, Lissy,” he said stubbornly, and my smile faltered. “Bree’s going to come back and he’s going to hurt you,” he said. My heart stuttered in my chest. Alyssa remained silent.

“Don’t be naïve, Lissy,” Tony said. “Don’t be ignorant.”

“I know, Tony. We already talked about that… I… I don’t know…”

“Lissy…”

“No, Tony. You’re the naïve and ignorant one. I know what I am in for,” she said, and I was glad that she said that.

“How am I naïve and ignorant?” he asked.

“Nothing,” she muttered.

“What do you mean? Just tell me,” he sighed, sounding frustrated. I frowned, knowing what she was about to say. Or about not to say.

“It-It’s nothing, nothing,” she shook her head. I grimaced. I wished she would just tell him already; he deserved to know. She needed both of us to be there for her, but she needed to open up first.

“Alyssa,” he said firmly.

“Don’t be mad,” she whispered, and my heart broke hearing her sound so sad and scared.

I heard the rustling of fabric, indicating she was pulling her sleeve up. I didn’t like that I was overhearing this—this was too personal of a moment, but I guess it was a little too late to walk away.

“What the fuck!” Tony yelled, and I widened my eyes at his reaction. I heard her begin to cry. “You can’t do that! You can’t do that, Alyssa! No!” he screamed. “You idiot!” Alyssa let out a loud sob, and before I knew it she was running away from him and in my direction. I stepped into view and immediately wrapped my arms around her, glaring at Tony over her shoulder.

His face was contorted in anger, an anger that I’ve never seen before. I knew that he would be upset over this, but that didn’t mean he should be angry. He knew what it was like—I knew what it was like—but that only meant that we should be more understanding. We had both been in her place before. We couldn’t get mad at her; we had to support her. Tony should know not to yell at her over this, and the fact that he put her down like that made my blood boil.

I knew, deep down, that Tony just didn’t want to see his sister go through what he went through, but I hated his reaction. However, I was positive that he was more angry at himself than her, but still.

“Shh, shh,” I cooed, petting the back of her head. Her body shook in my arms.

Tony glared at me. “Give her to me,” he said, reaching out.

“No!” I hissed, turning away with her as she cried softly into my shoulder. “You’ve done enough, Tony,” I said protectively. Alyssa squeezed her arms around me.

“She’s my sister. I should be the one helping her, not you!” he spat.

“Tony, you’re not thinking clearly. Go outside and get some air. Go see Drew. You can try this again later. Just—Just go. It’s okay, I know you don’t mean it,” I said lowly. I didn’t want to make Tony feel guilty and possibly trigger him, but he couldn’t be here right now. Tony somehow agreed without a fight and nodded, staring at his sister in my arms sadly. Then, he disappeared.

“H-He’s being s-so stupid,” she sobbed.

“I know. We are all stupid. Boys are stupid,” I said softly. Alyssa sniffled and I felt her smile against my shoulder. I rubbed her back soothingly.

She laughed quietly. “I won’t argue with that.”

OMG this story was honestly so good! My emotions were literally all over the place. So many plot twists I couldn't stop reading the whole time it sucked me in. You are such a good writer, (I'm sure you already know that) but honestly you should consider being an author because this was just amazing. It was like I was there, I felt everything the characters felt, which is how it should be! You deserve so much praise and ugh just thank you for entertaining me with your fantastic talent. It's weird because I noticed I started remembering to take MY medicine as well after reading this. I have bipolar and a whole mess of other things and for some reason this story made me feel better. It's hard living life this way but it can be done. Just holy shit this story.
You rock.
Okay bye.
one day I hope I can write this well...
bye XOXO <3
