Chapter Four
“Auntie Erica” Jacob called as he ran to Erica who had just walked through Jaime’s front door. She picked Jacob up and kissed him on both cheeks
“Hello sweetpea” She replied “Where’s your sister?” She asked
“Helping daddy do the cooking” Jacob replied, Erica carried him through to the kitchen and sat him on the counter.
“Does daddy need help cooking?” Erica asked jokingly, Jacob nodded
“Yeah, he not very good” They all burst out laughing. Erica gave both Amanda and Jaime a kiss on the cheek before taking a drink from his fridge.
“Auntie E, how come we don’t see Uncle Mikey anymore?” Jacob said out of nowhere, it caught Erica off guard and she almost choked on her drink.
“I miss Mikey” Amanda said. Jaime gave Erica a look and she nodded, she knew this would come at some point.
“Amanda, come here” Erica picked her up and sat her with her brother on the kitchen side
“We’re not going to see Uncle Mikey anymore because he had to go away. He can’t come back and we won’t see him for a long, long time” She began hoping it would be enough
“Does he not want to see us anymore?” Jacob asked quite sad at the thought
“Of course he does, he just can’t. Remember baby Caleb, where he went. You can’t ever meet him remember? Well that’s where Uncle Mikey has gone. He has pictures of you guys in his wallet though, so he can see you all the time, okay?” She smiled at them both and they finally dropped it.
“Okay, I’m going to miss him though. He my favourite uncle” Jacob finished
“Me too sweet pea, me too” She kissed them both on the head “Now come on, let’s get this table ready for dinner shall we?” Both children cheered and hopped off the side to prepare the table.
Erica turned around and was pulled into a hug by Jaime, she started to cry a little but he calmed her down.
“You did good, that was great” He comforted “It was horrible” She sobbed back before pulling away, wiping her tears, giving a sad smile and helping the kids with the table.
It had been 3 months since Mike had passed away and Erica was coping, she would have a lot of bad days but she’s doing better than she thought she would. That’s mainly because she’s had a great support system in the form of Jaime, Vic, Casey, Mal and Tony. They’ve all been there for each other. She did get given a few casseroles which made her laugh. She feels Mike’s presence all the time, that’s another reason why she’s been doing okay; it’s also a reason for her bad days. Everything reminds her of him sometimes that makes her smile or laugh and other times it makes her breakdown in tears. She’s getting there though.
She heads back out on tour next month with We the Kings, All Time Low and Man Overboard again. She has toured with the other two bands on Warped Tour once or twice so they were all old friends. She couldn’t wait to hang out with Zac from MO again though. He took her and the twins out for their first tour and became good friends and she hasn’t seen him in a while.
Many bands over the last couple of months have paid tribute to Mike or did something in his honour. Erica and Vic and Casey have started a charity to get children to play music, especially drums. The idea came about after the young waitress in the diner told them that Mike inspired her to play drums. It’s called the Mike Fuentes Musical Program and is located in the heart of San Diego. They have got in contact with people in other bands and throughout the year they plan on having them come in and teach things to kids. It’s home to as many people as could sign up before a deadline, which turned out to be quite a lot, but they can’t wait to shape the future of the music industry.
Vic, Jaime and Tony haven’t given up on music completely but for now this is the only music they’re even thinking about playing. The boys couldn’t help but get involved in something so great. Jaime is thinking about going into producing full time though, instead of looking for another band or something. He doesn’t think he could bring himself to play in another band after Mike. Besides, he has a family and he can’t keep leaving on tour when they’re mother isn’t about. It wouldn’t be fair on them or him. He'd probably work out of Erica's studio. Tony and Vic felt the same but have yet to decide their future. Maybe Vic will just do this music program full time. We’ll see. Tony’s is kind of already sorted though; he has Key Street and his son. Isla had her baby in the middle of last month and, after asking Vic and Erica’s permission they named him Michael. Tony and Isla were going to name him Malcolm Michael Perry but in the end went with Michael Malcolm Perry. It suited him perfectly.
“Are you excited about tour?” Jaime asked as dinner was finally served.
“I’m nervous. It’s like my first tour all over again” She admitted “But I have the twins and Zac will be there so it should be okay” She said more to reassure herself than anything
“And we’re coming out to see you in LA” Jaime pointed at the kids who got really excited, they always loved seeing their dad, aunt and uncles perform.
“Good, I can’t wait. Even though that’s the first show” She laughed a little, Jaime missed hearing her laugh. She didn’t do it much anymore, none of them did.
“I know I know, maybe we’ll come out and see you at another show too, with Tony and Vic” he suggested and Erica smiled at that idea
“I’d like that” She looked over to Jacob who was trying to put his vegetables on his sister’s plate, Jaime noticed too and the pair of them just laughed at him.
“Jacob, eat your vegetables please. Stop trying to give them to ‘Manda” Jaime commanded. Jacob let out a sigh of defeat and ate his peas. He made many faces to show his dislike for them but it only caused more laughs.
“Auntie Erica, bed time story?” Jacob asked and Amanda jumped up and down with him.
“Hmm, okay. What do you want to hear tonight?” She usually made up stories for the pair of them when she came over but occasionally they would ask for specific stories.
“Disneyland, you and uncy Mikey” Amanda answered that was her favourite. It was one of Erica’s favourite too.
“My favourite” Erica replied as Amanda and jumped onto Jaime’s lap, he was sat on the beanbag next to Jacob’s bed.
“Are you guys ready?” Erica asked and they nodded.
Erica told them the story of the day she and Mike went to Disneyland and met Arielle and Jonathan and how they played bogies and met Peter Pan. The kids fell asleep straight away and Erica smiled at them both. She loved these kids. She and Jaime kissed Jacob on the forehead before leaving. Jaime carried Amanda into her own room and tucked her in bed while Erica went downstairs and made some hot chocolate for her best friend and her.
When Jaime came downstairs they sat on the couch, drinking their hot chocolate, and spoke about the upcoming tour and what Erica was going to be doing with the charity when she gets back. She was excited about this project and she thinks it could be really successful. Vic had also got into contact with Kevin Lyman and asked if he could somehow incorporate it into Warped Tour this year. Kevin thought it was a great idea and is working around a few ideas with Vic and Casey at the moment.
It got late and Erica decided she was going to go home. She put her cup in the sink and kissed Jaime on the cheek.
“See you later pumpkin” She said and headed for the door.
“Will you be okay tonight?” He asked a little concerned for her after the children bought up Mike.
“Yeah, I’m just going to have a shower and go to bed” Erica gave him a soft smile and he believed she would be okay.
“Call me if you need me okay? You can come over whenever you want” He reminded her
“Jaime, sweetie, you don’t have to do this every time I leave your house. I’ll be fine. Now go get some sleep, you look knackered” She laughed a little
“I just worry that’s all. Good night sweetie” He hugged her tightly and locked the door behind her.
Jaime went upstairs, checked on the children and walked into his room. When he got changed and sat in bed comfortably, he pulled out a photo album; his wedding photo album. He flipped through pictures of him and Jess and let a few small tears escape his eyes. He really did miss her, despite everything with Mike his main focus at the minute was the loss of his wife. She was still alive but she was so distant and vacant. He was now a single father but still so in love and it hurt so much.
He was interrupted when his door creaked open a little.
“Daddy, why are you crying?” Amanda asked as she walked over to his bed slowly, teddy in hand. He couldn’t bring himself to say it was the fact that her mother left him so lied.
“I miss Uncle Mikey baby. Why are you awake?” Technically it wasn’t a lie.
“Bad dream, can I sleep with you?” She asked hopefully as she climbed onto his bed and wrapped her littler arms around his neck.
“Of course you can pudding” He put away his photo album and turned out the light, both of them falling asleep quickly.
“Jacob hurry up or I’m leaving you behind. We have to leave now or Auntie Erica won’t let you in” Jaime teased as he was tying the laces on Amanda’s shoes up. It was the first day of Erica’s tour and she was already in LA with the twins and other bands. Jaime was looking to be there around lunch time but with Jacob dressing himself that was proving to be a bit of a challenge.
“I’m ready” He sang as he skipped down the stairs, blow up guitar in hand
“Finally and are you hoping Erica will let you join her band with that?” Jaime asked as he shooed the kids out of the house and got them in the car.
“Yes, I can be like you and run around the stage loads” Jacob’s reply bought the biggest smile to Jaime’s face.
“Well aren’t you the cutest little rock star” Jaime said as he strapped himself in and started the car.
“Auntie Erica” Jacob and Amanda called out in unison as they skipped through the bus to the bunk area to find Erica putting on her shoes. Anonymous no longer had the ‘party bus’ after many, many years of touring in it, it kind of died. They tried to fix it but it was no use. It was weird being in a normal tour bus but they didn’t mind. They kind of liked the change.
“Hey cuties” She said and wrapped them both in a hug at the same time. “Jacob are you joining the band?” Erica asked with excitement coating her words.
He nodded vigorously and started to strum the fake guitar “I’m going to be like daddy” Erica smiled just as much as Jaime did at his response.
“Good. Don’t tell him I said this but I think you might be better than Zeke” She said loud enough for Zeke to hear and Jacob giggled
“I heard that” Zeke shouted through the bus as he came through and scooped Jacob into his arms and started blowing raspberries on his belly. Erica picked up Amanda and walked to the front of the bus and greeted Jaime.
“We have sound check in 10 minutes and then we can do lunch if you want?” She questioned.
“Sounds like a plan. Maybe Jacob can play with you in sound check?” Jaime asked and looked at Jacob whose face lit up.
“Please Auntie Erica, please please please” He was giving her puppy dog eyes and pulling all these cute expressions.
“Of course you can sweet pea” She agreed and Jacob started to dance around the bus and Amanda got up and joined him. Followed by Chad and within no time everyone was dancing around the front lounge of the bus.
“Jacob you can stand this side of the stage” They had given him an acoustic guitar and put a sound pack on him. It wasn’t on but he didn’t know that.
Erica, Chad and Zeke played through sound check and Jacob was running about, just like Jaime used to do, smiling and laughing as he strummed the guitar. Jaime had been filming him as he stood on the floor.
When they had finished checking Jaime and Amanda applauded and cheered for Jacob, as did Zac, Zack, Jack and Rian who had also come out to see the future rock star. Erica lifted him up on her shoulders and made him feel like a king.
“Daddy, I’m a rock star” Jacob shouted when Erica put him down and he ran to his dad.
The catering wasn't the best so someone went and picked up a load of pizza for everyone, which was much appreciated. All 4 bands had lunch together in the middle of the venue. It reminded Erica of the time Mike took her to see Metallica sound check for their 6 month anniversary. It also reminded her of every time they would eat lunch at Disneyland. She couldn’t stop smiling over lunch and everyone noticed, they were happy for her.
“2 minute warning” the tour manage called through the room as Anonymous were preparing to go on. We the Kings had just come off stage and Erica was getting nervous again. She hasn’t played music in front of an audience in months. She barely even rehearsed with the guys before tour; they did get plenty rehearsal in but Erica still found it a bit weird for some reason.
“Let’s go guys, we have an audience to impress” She shouted with the biggest grin on her face. Maybe she was right when she thought music could help a good amount in her recovery.
The show had been going really well so far and it had come to the final song in the set, Until the End of Time. It was one of their signature songs, that and Brightest Star were the 2 songs they would play during every set no matter what. This song would have a whole new meaning to it now though. Erica knew that she was about to get really emotional but also knew that she needed to do this. She couldn’t ignore this song forever, she needed to be strong.
Half way through the song and Erica’s breakdown came. She turned to Chad, on the drums and told him to carry on, she just needed a minute. She went to sing the next line but couldn’t stop the tears
“I’m sorry, I can’t do this” She whispered into the microphone through sobs and walked off stage. Chad and Zeke finished up the song and said thanks to the audience, as soon as Erica handed her guitar to her tech she was pulled into a warm embrace from Jaime. When the twins came off stage they joined him, Amanda and Jacob were hugging her legs. She felt comforted so much.
“Wait guys no, we have to finish that song. I have to finish it” They were all shocked but happy to hear it. Erica wiped her tears, took a gulp of water and went back onstage.
“Sorry about that, you guys paid to see a full set and a full set you shall get. From the top” Erica played through the entire song, a few stray tears caressed her face but she smiled through them. She needed to be strong and that’s exactly what she was doing.
She left the stage again, this time feeling a lot better than the first time.
“I told you you’d be fine” Jaime said as he kissed her on the cheek and followed her to the dressing room. "Mike would be so proud of you" he whispered as they entered the room.
“Auntie Erica cried like daddy cried” Amanda said to Chad who had the little girl on his lap. She’s a smart kid.
“Like daddy cried?” Erica asked Jaime, with an eyebrow raised. He mouthed Jess to her and she fully understood. They hung out and watched the rest of the bands before Jaime took the kids home, after a long hug with Erica. He wasn’t going to see her for a couple of months and felt bad for leaving her when she still needed someone by her side.
“Jaime, I have the boys and I have Zac and we both have phones. I’ll be fine, I promise. I’ll call you every day so stop bloody worrying” She said to put him at ease, it worked.
“Okay, I have to go though, I love you” He kissed her on the cheek “I love you too” Erica replied and waved at Jacob who was still awake, Amanda had passed out as soon as she was put in her car seat. “Bye” She said one last time and Jaime drove out of the venue.
Erica went back to her bus and partied with the other bands to celebrate their first night of tour.

When the twins came off stage they joined him, Amanda and Jacob were hugging her legs. She felt comforted so much.
“Wait guys no, we have to finish that song. I have to finish it” They were all shocked but happy to hear it. Erica wiped her tears, took a gulp of water and went back onstage.
“Sorry about that, you guys paid to see a full set and a full set you shall get. From the top” Erica played through the entire song, a few stray tears caressed her face but she smiled through them. She needed to be strong and that’s exactly what she was doing.
She left the stage again, this time feeling a lot better than the first time.
“I told you you’d be fine” Jaime said as he kissed her on the cheek and followed her to the dressing room. "Mike would be so proud of you" he whispered as they entered the room.
“Auntie Erica cried like daddy cried” Amanda said to Chad who had the little girl on his lap. She’s a smart kid.
“Like daddy cried?” Erica asked Jaime, with an eyebrow raised. He mouthed Jess to her and she fully understood. They hung out and watched the rest of the bands before Jaime took the kids home, after a long hug with Erica. He wasn’t going to see her for a couple of months and felt bad for leaving her when she still needed someone by her side.
“Jaime, I have the boys and I have Zac and we both have phones. I’ll be fine, I promise. I’ll call you every day so stop bloody worrying” She said to put him at ease, it worked.
“Okay, I have to go though, I love you” He kissed her on the cheek “I love you too” Erica replied and waved at Jacob who was still awake, Amanda had passed out as soon as she was put in her car seat. “Bye” She said one last time and Jaime drove out of the venue.
Erica went back to her bus and partied with the other bands to celebrate their first night of tour.
