A Diamond Bullet and a Gun Made of Gold

Chapter Nine

A few months had passed and Vic and Tegan were getting ready for the boys’ New Year’s Eve show. Since Jaime and Tony joined Mike and Vic in the band they have been writing and rehearsing loads. They’ve been doing a load of gigs around San Diego as well and tonight is probably their biggest show yet.
“Are you ready?” Vic asked as he walked into the bathroom to see Tegan finishing up her eye liner.
“Yep, all done” She answered and placed her make up back in her bag and walked out.
The young couple walked out of Vic’s room and out to his car. Vivian and Victor were already out a friend’s NYE party and Mike had already left for the venue so Vic locked the front door and the pair went on their way.
When they got to the venue they went in through the back and greeted the other three members of the band before heading out to the front of the bar they were playing at, to meet a few of their friends from school, since they had about 45 minutes until show time.
Vic and Tegan had made a few new friends this semester and had invited them along tonight and they agreed to come, they had been to a few of Vic’s other shows so already knew it was going to be a good night.
“Hey, you look so good” Amelia said before pulling Tegan into a hug and then did the same to Vic.
“Thanks, so do you” Tegan complimented back. Mike, Jaime and Tony were off somewhere else with their own friends, Mike and Tegan barely even spoke anymore; no arguing or anything. They just don’t say anything to one another. Sometimes it can be really awkward but everyone is used to it so don’t even notice it anymore.
Vic and Tegan spent about half an hour with Amelia and her twin brother Simon before Vic went back stage to set up. Tegan stayed out front because she knew that shows sound way better when you’re in the crowd than when you’re side of stage. Before they knew it, the boys hit the stage.
“What’s up San Diego? We’re Pierce the Veil and this song is called Currents Convulsive” Vic called into the microphone, it elicited a huge cheer and the band began to play.
The show went amazingly well and the crowd were brilliant. The boys felt like they were on top of the world. After they left the stage Tegan went back stage and congratulated them on doing such a sublime job and they thanked her, well Mike didn’t.
She let them cool down and told them that she was going to get them a drink so they should meet her in the front of the bar in ten. When they came back through they saw Tegan sat in a booth with Amelia and Simon and joined them. The boys took their drinks and couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces.
They couldn’t contain their joy any longer so after Jaime whispered something into Vic’s ear he made an announcement.
“So tonight it turns out there was a couple of guys from a record company at the show and after you left the dressing room they came in and offered us a contract” Vic said and Tegan’s face lit up.
“Holy shit, congratulations guys. I told you you’d make it” She said before she and Vic shared a passionate kiss, causing most people in the booth to laugh.
“They want us to record an album as soon as we can and then tour the shit out of it.” Tony added.
“You’re going to be the biggest band in the world in no time” Tegan declared.

Two days had gone by since Vic’s show and he was currently waiting with Tegan at the airport so she could go and visit her Aunt in New York.
“I’m going to miss you. We never spend any time apart so it’s going to be a weird two weeks” Vic said.
“I know, have we ever spent more than 3 days apart since I moved in?” Tegan asked in response.
“I don’t think we have. That’s quite bad isn’t it?” They both laughed at their sudden realisation.
“Oh well, I’m sure we’ll be strong enough to cope for a fortnight” Tegan replied.
Her flight number was called and the pair shared a long hug and kiss before Tegan picked up her bag and walked through the gates.

When Tegan arrived in New York her Aunt picked her up and they went straight to her apartment. Tegan was shown to the room she would be sleeping in for the duration of her stay and she unpacked her things before joining Delphi in the lounge once more.
“Where’s Marcus?” Tegan asked Delphi, she was eager to meet her Uncle.
“He’s at work, he’ll be home about five and then we’re going out for dinner. There’s a nice Italian restaurant down the street and we thought it would be nice to go out” Delphi replied.
“I love Italian food” Tegan admitted.
“Few” Delphi laughed while wiping imaginary sweat from her forehead. “So what do you want to do while you’re here?” Delphi asked.
“I’ve never been to New York so I want to do all the usual tourist things; I thought I could maybe see where you work too?” Tegan suggested.
“I’m sure we can do both of those things” Delphi smiled and two women settled on the couch and watched some television, with some mild chit-chat until Marcus got in from work.
“You must be Tegan?” was the first thing he said when he entered the lounge.
“That would be me” She replied.
“Well it’s nice to finally meet you, I’ve heard so much about you” He confessed.
“Likewise” Tegan responded.
“I’ll just go shower and change and we can go out for dinner” And with that he walked off in the direction of his and Delphi’s bedroom.
“He seems nice, I like him already” Tegan admitted to her Aunt.
“He’s lovely, I had a feeling you two would get on. You’re quite similar, both have great senses of humour” Delphi divulged.
“I can’t wait” They both chuckled and resumed watching the TV show they had started earlier.

Within about an hour they were all at the Italian restaurant and were ordering their food.
“So when I said I love Italian food I actually just meant I could live off Macaroni Cheese if it was possible” Tegan said as the waitress walked away.
“Your mom used to love Macaroni Cheese too, maybe you inherited your love for it” They all laughed at Delphi’s joke before the conversation switched to something more serious.
“So Tegan, you’re leaving school this year right? What are you planning on doing?” Marcus asked.
“I don’t know. I’m still figuring it out. I don’t have any talents or anything that I can really pursue but for the last month I’ve been looking into writing but I don’t know yet” Tegan answered.
“What sort of writing?” Marcus continued.
“I’m not sure, like I said, I haven’t really thought about it” She blushed at her lack of future plans.
“I was like that at your age, I didn’t know where I wanted to go with my life and now I have my own business” Marcus comforted after seeing how uneasy this conversation made Tegan.
“Well I doubt I’ll have my own business but never say never right?” Tegan joked.
“That’s the spirit” Marcus said before lifting his beer to take a sip.
“You could always come and intern at the magazine once you finish school, I mean if you want?” Delphi suggested.
“Really?” Tegan asked surprised.
“Yes of course, you may not want to get into journalism but it’s an experience right? And if you like writing it could be good fun”
“Erm, that would be pretty cool but I don’t know if I’d be able to cope living in New York” Tegan said quietly.
“That’s okay; you don’t have to make your mind up right now. But the offer is always there” Delphi patted Tegan on the hand as a sign of understanding.
Their food arrived not long after and the rest of the evening was spent getting to know each other better. Tegan told Delphi and Marcus about her and Vic, about how she’s been living with his family for the last three years. How she makes a pretty tasty Banoffee Pie and how Vic is in a band. Delphi and Marcus spoke about what they do for a living and about what it was like to live in Australia. They also planned out a few things for the upcoming two weeks for Tegan to do with them.

Today Marcus was taking Tegan to Times Square; Delphi had been called into work at last minute so told the pair of them to go without her. Tegan loved it; she took a few photos and was just in awe at how cool it was.
“This place is awesome” Tegan announced as she looked around at her surroundings.
“I love it here” Marcus admitted.
“I think it’s beautiful but I don’t know if I’d ever be able to live anywhere but SD” Tegan stated.
“If you do intern with Delphi it wouldn’t be permanent, you could always go back to San Diego” Marcus said.
“I know, it is an amazing opportunity but I just don’t know if I’d cope with being away from my family for so long” Tegan said quietly. “I mean this is the longest Vic and I have been apart in 3 years” She said this time with more of a chuckle.
“It’s only been 5 days” Marcus joked.
“I know but we’ve been best friends since we were 6 and even when my parents were alive we still spent every moment we could with each other. Now we live together it’s even harder to separate us” Tegan smiled at the thought of Vic.
“I bet it’s even more difficult now you’re a couple?” Marcus asked teasingly.
“I guess you could say that.” Tegan laughed.
“Aw, young love” They both giggled and made a decision on where to go for lunch.
After lunch they wondered around a bit more and did a spot of shopping and before it got too late they went back home. Tomorrow Tegan was going into work with Delphi and her aunt was going to show her what it’s like to work in the magazine industry.
Delphi works for a high end fashion magazine and is always extremely busy. She’s one of the editors but also writes a column every month. It’s a tough business to get into but with the right connections and enough will power and commitment you can land yourself a pretty decent job and that’s exactly what Delphi did. She worked really hard for her job. When she was in Australia she was just a columnist but for a really big fashion magazine out there. When she was offered the job of both editor and columnist for her current magazine she couldn’t refuse, she would be stupid to, to be honest.
