Tangled In The Great Escape

First Day Flirtation

SKYE'S POV

Entering an unfamiliar classroom, I hoisted my backpack up before approaching the teacher. 'Hi,' I said quietly, 'I'm Skye Dawson. I'm the new girl.' The teacher - a small, fat man with brown velvet trousers and a mustache that seemed to still hold a fraction of last night's dinner - spun around on his seat and gave me a degrading look.

'Okay, Ms Dawson, take a seat where you wish.'

Glancing around at my English classmates, I spotted a free desk up the back and quickly made my way towards it. Diving into the seat, I took out my notepad and pencil case before reading my desk. It was covered in drawings of love hearts, smiley faces and the odd male private part. Laughing at two little conversations people seemed to be having with each other on it, I averted my gaze to my left.

A reasonably tall girl sat across from me, her blonde hair draped over her petite shoulder. She wore a white dress with a brown belt - it looked quite nice, but I could never leave the house in something like that. I was sitting in my black skinny jeans with my Of Mice & Men tank top slouching over my body and my bandeau hiding my bra.

Pushing my wardrobe thoughts aside, I looked to my right. There was a pretty small guy (which meant he was my height) sitting in some black jeans and a grey top. He had long black hair that fell across his face and was talking intensely to the person on his other side.

'Class, we have a new pupil.' Said the teacher, pulling me out of my own head. He gestured for me to stand up, so I did - reluctantly. 'This is your new classmate, Skye Dawson. Please do not refrain from helping Skye if she is in need of assistance.' I'm not 6, dumbass. I am in senior year. 'Thats all. You may now sit, Ms Dawson.'

Cringing, I plopped myself back down on the seat and groaned into my palms as they covered my face. Peeking out from in between my fingers, I noticed that the teacher had began to write something on the board. Not wanting to get in trouble, and liking English quite a lot, I decided it would be best if I copied what he was scribbling down.

The period flew by, and so did the next, meaning that before I could blink I found myself sitting in a large Maths class surrounded by people I didn't know asking questions I couldn't answer. Feeling lost as the teacher, Mrs Gilbert, did an equation, I flipped to the back of my Maths book and began to write some lyrics.

You heard me cry but you never came running,
I'm expected to believe you care?
slit my throat and set me up to burn, darling
it's too much of a burden to bare.

'Psst,' said a voice to my left, I turned to see a tall guy leaning towards me. 'You stuck?'

'Yeah,' I said, but then remembered I hadn't been listening for the last fifteen minutes so who knows if I was stuck on what they were doing by that point. 'Uh, no I mean. Sorry.'

'Okay?' he said, eyebrows furrowed. 'You're called Skye, right?'

'Yeah, how did you know?'

'I know everything,' he winked. Okay, enough of that please. I knew his type, it was obvious in the way he carried himself - popular boy, got every girl he wanted. 'I'm Mike.'

'Nice to meet you,' I lied.

'You should come and find me at lunch, don't want you sitting alone.' As much as I hated the thought of sitting with someone who would probably try to cup a feel, I also didn't want to be classed as a loner after my first day. I nodded at him, not daring to look in case I smiled politely and it was misinterpreted.

The bell rang, concluding one very boring period. 'See you at lunch,' said Mike, rising from his seat and exiting the classroom. Oh joy.

Entering the busy canteen, I joined the queue and glanced around the large room. The black haired boy from English came up beside me, drumming his fingers against the worktop.

'Vic,' he whispered, the boy on front of me spun around. Oh god, he's cute. Feeling my cheeks go red, I looked down. This is kind of awkward, I'm sandwiched.

'Um, you can skip if you want?' I offered, momentarily letting my eyes fall on the black haired boy.

'Really?' He said hopefully.

'Kellin don't skip,' laughed the brown haired boy. Oh my goodness, he has a cute laugh too. 'I'm sorry,' he said to me.

'Dude, she said it's fine,' Kellin pointed out.

'Yeah, go ahead,' I said, switching places with Kellin.

'Thanks,' he said. 'You're in my English, right? The new girl?'

'I'm sure she has a name,' said the other boy. Lifting my eyes, I let them meet his - I instantly felt myself drowning in his big brown eyes.

'I'm Skye,' I said. 'You are?'

'I'm Vic,' he said, 'this is Kellin.'

I smiled at the two boys, not really knowing what to say next. Suddenly I came to notice that Kellin had spun Vic around and they were talking away about something, saving me from any uneasy small talk. I didn't catch the conversation as I was concentrating on the food, but I did hear a good band name which made me smile.

Paying for my food, I lifted the tray and began to scan the room for Mike. Spotting him, I began to approach the table where he was sitting - you really don't fit in here, Skye. Tapping him on the shoulder, he whipped round and grinned at me before patting the space next to him. 'Meet Skye,' he said.

A brown haired girl with insanely orange skin leaned over the table, revealing her cleavage to all, and extended her hand out to me. 'Becca,' she said in a preppy voice. I shook her hand, feeling her fake nails dig in to my pale skin. Why am I sitting here?

The boys all stated their names before giving me a cheeky smile, making me feel even more uncomfortable.

'So,' said Mike as he took a drink of his water, 'were you stuck on that math work earlier?'

'I just wasn't paying attention,' I confessed, taking a fry and popping it in my mouth. 'There's no point if I don't get it when I do listen, right?'

He chuckled to himself, 'right.' He took a bite of his panini before swallowing it and glancing at me. 'If you ever need help with it, I'm here.'

'Thanks,' I said, trying desperately not to sound cold and harsh.

Soon enough, school came to a loud, deafening end. I hurried through the halls and burst out the double doors, inhaling the fresh air I missed so dearly. Trotting down the steps, I followed the path out of the school and began to walk home - the warm San Diego air whispering through my hair.
