As we walked up to the room my mum is in, my heart started pounding. I felt myself squeezing Vic’s hand more and more tightly. I stopped just outside of the room, turning to face him.

“I know she’s going to love you.” I smiled, even though I was still nervous. I pecked his lips quickly and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t wait for you two to finally meet!” I squealed.

He held my hand tighter as I turned the door knob to get into the room.


“Hey mama,” I said, smiling, giving her a big hug and kiss on the cheek. “This is Vic.” I pointed to Vic, who was awkwardly standing in the doorway, waiting on permission to come in.

“Come in come in, Vic!” she said, a smile on her face. I pulled a chair next to me for Vic to sit on and he walked over smiling widely.

“I’m Vic; I’ve heard so many amazing things about you. I’m sorry you’re going through this; you really do seem like the most amazing woman. I’ve been excited to meet you for so long, I’m glad I finally am.” Vic spoke in a confident, happy tone and smiled to my mum, who shook his hand and nodded. “And I can definitely see where Kimberly gets her good looks from.”

I blushed, I should’ve known he was going to pull that old line.

“Hello Vic, I’m Helena. You’re very charming.” She winked, I did say she hasn’t lost her sense of humour… “It’s amazing to finally meet you. This one talks about you ever so much. You’re quite the handsome man, and you’re very polite. You seem like a lovely lad. My girl has certainly got lucky. Well done, Kim.” She spoke, smiling widely at us both.

Vic put his arm around me, kissing the side of my head very quickly before letting go. “I’m afraid, Mrs Rose, that I’m the lucky one. Kim is just, perfect. I know everything that’s going on with her right now and I just want you to know that I’m more than 100% going to be there for her. I love this girl, ma’am.” He said, smiling at me. I blushed, yet again.

“Call me Helena, love! I’m glad you are there for her, that gives me peace of mind.” she smiled, squeezing my hand. I smiled widely at her.

“Well, I see you’ve eaten your soup – all of it. Well done, mama. I’m so very proud.” I said, inspecting the now empty bowl.

“And you, my baby?” she spoke, concern lacing her voice.

“Half a bowl of pasta.” I smiled, her returning it quickly. “However, I’m really thirsty, I’m going to get a drink, anyone want anything?” I said, looking around to see them both shaking their head ‘no’. I told them I’d be back in a minute or two.

When I got back, both of my brothers were in the room now and I could tell Vic felt kind of uneasy.

“Hey Kimmy, we met your boyfriend.” My oldest brother, Marc teased.

“Hello Marc. Be nice!” I scolded, knowing what my brothers good be like meeting boyfriends for the first time, before sitting on Vic’s lap as my other brother, Ben, was sitting in the chair I once was.

“We were, we were.” Ben said. I turned to Vic, who was now smiling and cuddling me close.
We only stayed for another 15 minutes before bidding our farewells to everyone. Vic told my mum he would come visit her with me, and that he hopes she gets home this weekend. He also told her that she’s always in his thoughts and he’ll pray for her. That bit made my heart melt. I’m so glad he gets along with my family.

I turned to Vic as we were driving home and smiled. “Aw man, I’m so glad you got along with everyone. My mum loves you, I can see it.” I said, resting my head against the chair, grabbing Vic’s hand and repeatedly kissing it, since I couldn’t kiss his face.

He turned to me and smiled even wider, “I know right! I’m so glad. I love her, she’s awesome. She told me to always watch out for you. And that she has faith that we’ll be together for a long, long time. Which I’m glad about; I’ve been thinking the same thing. I love you Kim, I really do. I’m so happy, I feel like I’m part of your family now.” Vic gushed, clearly happy that my mum loves him.

“You’re definitely part of the family, baby.” I said, looking over to my beautiful boyfriend. His hair was naturally curly today and curls came from the bits his beanie wasn’t covering. I love his hair, it’s always so soft and it always smells good. “I can’t wait to get home now, have some ice cream and cuddle in bed with you. You’re good to stay tonight, right?”

“Of course baby girl. I can’t wait either.” He said, bringing my hand up to his lips to kiss it softly.

As soon as we got home I ripped open a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, grabbing two spoons and watching film after film with Vic. We kissed, we laughed, we shared stories, we hugged, and we were just together. And it was perfect.
