Are We Losing, or Beginning?

Chapter 1

“God damn,” I breathed, looking out of our tour bus window.

“What’s got your panties in a twist, brother?” Mike bounced over to me, slapping me on the back. “You’ve been staring out this window for thirty minutes now!”

I moved over to the side so he could see. His face suddenly grew serious. “What the fuck happened?” he squinted his eyes.

I shivered. I had seen the entire thing. I just so happened to glance out the window when I hear a terrible screeching noise and noticed a horrific scene unfold before my eyes. The car slammed into the side of another… causing the hit car to slide around, hit a guardrail, and then flip numerous times. When it had finally landed, the car was upside down. Just the thought that somebody was actually in that car as it crashed made me nauseated.

“Really bad crash,” I mumbled. “I don’t know how you didn’t hear it,” I commented, referring to the sound that the crash made. It was terrible, and, surely, it would be stuck in my head for a while. Things tend to get stuck in my head easily.

Mike held up his headphones, frowning. “I can't even hear myself think with these bad boys in,” he said, slightly grinning, but then returning to a solemn state.

I nodded, turning back to the crash scene. They were cleaning up now, the victim finally being rushed away in an ambulance.

Did you guys see that?” Tony and Jaime busted through the bus doors, out of breath and their eyes wide. I nodded.

“We were outside talking to fans, when all of a sudden we heard this loud bang, and we turned to see this car flipping and crashing, and we just kind of stood there for thirty minutes,” Jaime rambled, shaking his head. His voice was full of adrenaline.

“I know, I was sitting here watching, too,” I said quietly. The thing about witnessing something as horrific as that is that it puts you in a sort of trance, like your mind can’t put together what you had just seen, and it needed time to figure it all out.

“I can’t believe I missed it!” Mike grumbled. I punched his arm.

“Dude! You did not want to see that,” Tony said. “I hope that the driver will be okay,” he added.

“Me too,” Jaime seconded. “Damn, though. The traffic is really bad right now. Do you think we will have to start the show late?”

Jaime brought up a good point. Not too many fans were here, yet, and we couldn’t play a show without an audience.

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” I said.

“Well, let’s get ready anyway. We have sound check soon,” Tony said. We all nodded and got ready to enter the venue.

I knew I had to focus on the show and get my head in the game, but I couldn’t seem to push out the image of the car flipping from my head. It was traumatizing enough to watch, so I couldn't imagine the trauma the driver must have had endured… if the driver was even alive.

~~

“What the fuck is up San Diego?!” I yelled enthusiastically into the microphone. We had started the concert thirty minutes later to give fans stuck in traffic a chance to get here in time.

The crowd roared in excitement. Hometown shows were always the best shows. The turnout at hometown shows was always better, especially because we were barely a year old band.

Before we jumped into the music, I spoke into the microphone seriously. “You all probably already know about the horrific car crash that happened just outside the venue, but I just wanted to say something real quick. If you saw it like I did, then I’m sorry, because it was horrible, and I probably won’t ever forget it. But, more importantly, I’d like to ask you guys to keep the driver in your thoughts and prayers,” I said. I closed my eyes, the crash replaying in my head again, and the conversation I had with our tour manager creeping into my mind. “Especially because she was apparently supposed to be here tonight,” I said, shaking my head in devastation. “So, we are dedicating this show to her, alright?” the crowd cheered. “Let’s rock,” I said seriously into the microphone, and then we began to do just that.

~~

The name of the girl from the crash was Savannah, and, apparently, that same name appeared on our guest list for after the show. We connected the dots. She was supposed to be here, but she got in an accident on the way.

Seeing the accident was one thing, but figuring out that we were connected to the victim in a small yet significant way was another. It was a terrible feeling. We loved all of our fans, and knowing that one of them couldn’t make it tonight due to extreme circumstances made my heart ache.
