Chapter Thirteen
THE ZOO – aka proposal day
It was 10:30 am Mike, Jaime, Jess and Erica had just arrived at the zoo. Jaime was as hyper as a 3 year old who had eaten a pack of skittles followed by a can on energy drink. He was filled with both nerves and excitement. Mike and Erica knew this but Jess took it as him being excited for the zoo since he hasn’t been in ages and loved going. Jess and Erica had already hit it off really well, they both felt like they had known each other for years, mainly because Jaime couldn’t stop talking about them to one another.
The two couples walked around for hours, they had been to visit the giraffes first because they were Erica’s favourite. They each made a joke of how Mike was like their own pet giraffe due to his height. He couldn’t help but agree with them. Following that they went to see the zebras, then the lions.
They had now stopped for lunch and Jess took this as her opportunity to get to know Erica a little more.
“So Erica, how long are you in San Diego for?”
“Until Monday when the boys head back to the UK, I’m stealing them for a couple of months. Please don’t hate me for it” She joked.
“Take them” Jess also joked. She found it hard to be away from the man she loved but she knew that he was living his dream and she got to share that with him so she couldn’t get mad at him. She would miss him though. She always did. “What do you have planned whilst you’re here?” She hoped that she would get to spend more time with Erica.
“Vic and I have some things planned but their secrets other than that just hanging out with these losers” She giggled while motioning to the boys who sat across from the two girls.
“Keeping secrets already, that’s not going to help the relationship.” She joked pointing at Mike and back at Erica.
“These ones will in the long run” She smiled and looked down at her food.
“OMG, please tell me. I am dying to know. You two wouldn’t shut up about it yesterday. I won’t give up until you tell me just so you know” Mike said.
“You’ll find out soon enough” She smiled in his direction as she took a bite of her food.
“Okay well I want to hang out with you more before you go” Jess said to Erica.
“Uh oh” Mike started. “They’re going to become best friends and neither of us will see our girlfriends again Mike kidded towards Jaime, who nodded in agreement.
“Ha ha” Jess laughed. “Since we’re all done eating can we please go and see the monkeys? They’re my favourite and we haven’t been there yet” Jaime, Mike and Erica all shouted yes in unison, full of enthusiasm. Jess was so confused and thought they were mocking her but she didn’t mind.
When they got to the monkeys Mike and Erica took some pictures of them both doing impressions of the furry creatures. Mike uploaded one to instagram with the caption “Just monkeying around with this loser ;)” before putting his phone back in his pocket.
The pair then went and sat on a bench just opposite the cages while Jaime and Jess were observing them.
In a matter of minutes a zoo attendant had arrived and Jaime had asked Jess if she would listen to him while he said something really important. Jaime had slipped the zoo attendant the ring box without Jess seeing. The monkey was sat on a branch by the railings.
“So Jess” He started as he slowly got down on one knee “We’ve been together for years now and I love you to the moon and back. I couldn’t imagine being with anyone else in the world.” By now they had earned themselves a crowd. Jess’ hand was covering her mouth but the giant smile was still evident, Mike and Erica had come back over and were filming this event. “I don’t think I would know what to do if I didn’t have you in my life and for that reason I am asking if you will do me the greatest honour and become my wife?” She nodded and let out a little tear before laughing and saying
“You’re a big time rock star and you couldn’t even get me a ring?”
“I did, it’s just that monkey stole it” Jaime laughed as he got off his knee and pointed to the monkey next to the zoo attendant. Jess let out a small chuckle while Jaime took the ring from the monkey and placed it on her finger. Everyone that had crowded round clapped and cheered before getting on their way. Jaime pulled Jess into the tightest hug, if he hadn’t let go when he did he might just have cracked her ribs. Mike & Erica came over hugging the two of them.
“I told you she would say yes” said Erica “So did I” Mike chimed in.
“You guys knew about this?” Jess queried.
“Erica helped me with this whole monkey proposal idea” Jaime answered. “Well thanks to you as well girlie” Jess said as she gave Erica another hug. “No problem. I’d do anything to help out my little pumpkin.” She winked at Jaime and they all began to make their way back to the car. It had gotten late quick and they couldn’t wait to share the news with everyone.
