Who Are You?
Prologue
Please don’t go.” He pleaded as he followed her out the front door. “Stay with me, talk to me.” He said as the dark sky behind them lit up with lighting followed by the loud rumble of the thunder. It was about to rain and hard. She unlocked her car and placed her hand on the door to get inside but he stopped her as he placed his hand on her arm. She slowly lifted her head and looked at him through her bloodshot eyes. He saw the pain in her eyes as the tears rolled down her cheeks. He wanted nothing more than to know why she was so sad, to hold her and make everything better but deep down he knew it wasn’t going to happen- this was it. She stared at him a moment longer before shaking her head.
“I need to go.” She swung her door open and got inside before she let him change her mind. He felt his heart fall into his stomach as he watched her back out of his driveway. He knew this might possibly be the end of what they had but he couldn’t let that happen. He ran back inside the house and searched for his car keys. He slipped on his shoes as soon as he had the keys in hand and ran out, barely stopping his pace to get inside the car. He backed out of the driveway and sped in the direction he saw her car go. He heard the thunder continue getting louder all around him just as the sky split and down came the pouring, thick sheets of rain. He gripped his steering wheel as he searched the streets in search of her navy blue Honda. Where could she have gone?
Luckily the streets where nearly empty at this time of night that it didn’t take him long to spot the tail lights of her car approaching the stop lights up ahead. He sped up as he saw the light change back to green and trailed right behind her car. He had his hand on the knob for his headlights and was ready to flicker them to catch her attention and have her pull over. He envisioned in his mind them being back home and things going back to normal but fate already had a plan set in motion that neither of them were prepared for.
The cars hit the middle of the intersection and just as he was about to turn the knob he saw a blinding light coming from his left side. He tried to get out of the way or at least warn her but it was already too late. The drunk driver plunged through the middle of the cars without a second’s thought, sending them reeling on the wet pavement. He felt his car flip in the air with the momentum sending him tossing and turning inside. He felt the world stand still as he caught sight of her car not so far away, already on the ground with the wheels facing the eerie sky. He yelled out her name in anguish but was drowned out by the loud thunder as his car smashed against the pavement. His limp body fell on the steering wheel as he caught one last glimpse of her car and his eyes closed shut.
Moments later the streets of San Diego were filled with the shrill cry of sirens as they appeared at the scene of the crime. The rain subsided when they found the girl trapped in her overturn car and the man thrown on the dash of his. They saw the pools of dark red decorate the black pavement and they knew then that the world lost a piece of their eternal love.
