Going Away To College

News

TONY'S POV

'Hey, Oli is that you?'

'Hey Tony, how's it going? Congratulations by the way! Rachel screamed it via text.'

'Thanks, man,' I replied, smiling to myself. 'Look, I have something to ask you. Before his passing, I asked her Dad about marrying her and stuff, y'know?'

'Yeah.'

'Yeah, well he said I was to make sure whoever walked her down the aisle really loved her. We're thinking about having the wedding in around six months so it'll be spring. I was wondering if you would be able to come and walk her?' I asked, secretly praying he'd say yes.

'Are you serious? Mate, of course I will!'

'That means so much, man. She'll seriously love it.'

'Thanks for asking! That's awesome of you. How are things anyway?'

'They're good, she's been having pretty mental mood swings lately though.'

'Is she like that a lot?' He laughed

'Dude, I swear to god! She's never usually like this.'

'Aw Tony,' laughed Oli. 'Just be nice to her, it's only mood swings. They'll pass soon enough.'

'Yesterday I offered to make her breakfast and she accused me of calling her useless! I made it anyway and as soon as she's done she runs to the bathroom and throws up. I'm not that bad a cook, am I?'

'Tony...' said Oli quietly.

'What? Am I really that shit?'

'No, don't you see? Sick in the morning, mood swings?'

'She's on her period?' I asked in confusion.

'No,' he paused. 'She's not.'

Oli's words sank in, my clutch on the phone tightened. 'Shit.'

'Have you, y'know, unprotected?'

'Like 3 weeks ago,' I replied. 'I need to go.'

'Alright, good luck with the mrs.'

'Mmm.'

Hanging up, I called for Rachel. She came into the kitchen minutes later with one hand rubbing her stomach.

'What's wrong?' I asked, gesturing towards her hand.

'I don't feel well,' she groaned, 'I keep getting really light headed.'

'Um, I was just wondering,' watching as she swayed from left to right, I took hold of her hips. 'Have you had your, um...' I trailed off, feeling pretty invasive.

'No,' she said, shaking her head. The movements became slower as her eyes widened. 'You don't think?'

'I think we should check,' I admitted, biting my lip and glancing down at her stomach. 'Just to be safe.'

'We should go to the pharmacy now,' she said, stepping back and slamming her hands on the table as another wave of nausea hit. 'Like, right now.'

'Okay, okay.' Grabbing my keys off the counter, I wrapped her arm around my neck and walked her out the door. Locking it behind me, I picked her up bridal style and carried her to the car. Plopping her in the passengers seat, she covered her mouth as I ran around and jumped in the drivers seat. 'You ready?' I asked, watching as he held her stomach.

'Just hurry up before I'm sick again,' she insisted.

Pulling out of the driveway, we soon found ourselves on the main road headed for town. I took a left and slowed as we approached a small car park. Spotting a free space, I reversed in before killing the ignition.

'I'm gonna stay here,' she said. 'Or wait outside,' she blurted, rushing out the car an throwing up.

'One minute!' I shouted, jogging away from the car and up the stairs. Walking out on to the street, I spotted the pharmacy on my far right. I carried on jogging until I reached its green wooden door. Pushing it open, I lifted some paracetamol for her head before asking for 2 pregnancy tests (just to be sure). As the woman collected them, she kept giving me a look - it was as if she thought I was purchasing them for two different girls. Handing over the required amount of money, I grabbed the small bag of things and rushed back out of the store. Picking up my pace, I bolted back to the car to see Rae sitting with her head on the dashboard.

'Got it,' I said, sliding into my seat and placing the bag in the center console.

'Good,' she replied, lifting her head.

I drove home as fast as I could and we both practically raced each other up the stairs to the bathroom. Handing her the bag, she looked at me with an odd expression.

'I'm gonna do this bit alone,' she laughed, gently pushing me back out the bathroom. 'I won't look, don't worry.'

'Thank you,' I said, smiling as I slid down the other side of the door. I rested my head and began to ponder on the thought of being a Dad.

'Done,' said Rachel, the toilet flushing. 'Come on in.'

'Where is it?'

'It's on the side of the bath,' she told me as she washed her hands. Drying them on the towel, she turned to me before averting her gaze to the small stick. Picking it up, I kept it face down as I handed it to her.

'On the count of three,' she said.

We counted down in unison. 'Three. Two. One.'

Flipping it over, her eyes widened a great deal. I looked down at the small stick to see two blue lines, what the fuck does that mean? 'Tony,' she mumbled, gripping on to my arms. 'I- I'm pregnant.'

Not saying anything, but being overwhelmed, I lifted Rachel off the ground and spun her around. Slowing down, she slid through my arms and her little feet hit the ground.

'Do you want to keep it?' She asked. I simply stared at her, I wanted to know what she had to say first. 'I sort of,' her eyes darted about nervously. 'I sort of do?'

Still speechless, I pulled her into my embrace and hugged her. 'Tony, say something, you're scaring me.' I pulled away and pushed her hair behind her ear, smiling as it rested there perfectly.

'I can't wait,' I said softly, a small smile playing on my lips. You're a Dad, Tony. You are a Dad. You have a kid. You have a fiancee. You're doing not too bad, eh?

An hour later we tried the test again, just to be double sure. It was positive, thankfully.

RACHEL'S POV

Jaime, Vic and Mike entered the house, following Tony as he guided them through to the living room.

'This is a really nice place,' said Vic.

'Thanks, man,' smiled Tony.

'So what's with the emergency meet up?' Laughed Jaime.

I took Tony's hand and we sat next to each other on the couch facing the guys. 'We have some pretty big news,' he began, I love how excited he is.

'I'm pregnant!' I finished, jumping to my feet and running on the spot. The guys congratulated us both and we were showered with hugs and kisses.

'If their middle name isn't Vic I swear there'll be trouble,' he laughed, giving me a serious look but it soon being overpowered by a fit of laughter.

'Alright,' I smiled at him, tapping his shoulder.

I knew in that moment that everyone was right. When they say 'it gets better', they're not lying. It truly does get better. I was so thankful that I hadn't ended my life, the sheer thought brought me to tears. I would have missed out on all these amazing, spectacular things. If you spoke to the drained, depressed ghost of me that was not living but simply existing months before, you would never have expected such amazing things for me in the future. That's what it comes down to I think - looking ahead. You need to keep faith, it doesn't have to be a religion, just find something and put your faith in it. A song; a poem; a quote; a band; anything. Find that and allow yourself to have faith, let yourself have hope. Don't ever give up, because I can tell you for a fact that it will get better.
