When You Can't Sleep at Night
7
After warming up for with Jaime for about 15 minutes we were ready... I felt myself begin to shake again, but I was able to stop it without much thought. I was really excited, yet also really nervous. Excited about the prospect of being in a functional band, but nervous about the coincidences.
"Do you guys want to jam a little first or go straight to the demo song?" Vic asked.
"If it's ok with Tony I'd like to go straight to the demo," Jaime said, looking at me. Their was a certain fire in his eyes, he was going to kill it. Vic looked at me for conformation.
"Sounds good to me," I said, making eye contact with Vic. A spark of recognition flashed in his eyes, but it was gone faster than it came. He nodded and looked at me to play the first chords.
I did. I played the whole song, focusing only on my playing. I heard Mike, Vic and Jaime, so I knew I was on tempo and on key, but I didn't listen to Jaime's bass part, or Vic's singing and back up guitar. I most certainly didn't listen to Mike's drumming. I was absorbed in my own playing, and I played it perfectly.
When the song ended I looked over at Jaime. He was smiling widely and he gave me a thumbs up. I smiled back at him before looking to Vic. He looked surprised, but happy at the same time.
"That was great guys," he said, "Jaime your part fit in really well, you're an excellent composer and a good bassist." That caused Jaime's whole face to light up.
"And Tony," he said, looking at me and smirking, "A lot of people have auditioned to be guitarist, but you're the only one that played it as well as the original..."
He chuckled at the last part and looked me in the eyes. By the look of things, he almost defiantly knew who I was. "I have a couple of formalities to go through first," he said, "But I'll call you."
He walked off stage, grabbing Mike by the shoulder and pulling him along. I looked over at Jaime, he looked like he was going to scream. He ran over to me and hugged me tightly, picking me up and spinning me in the process.
"Holy shit Turtle!" he yelled, using the nickname that Mike started all those years ago, "That was amazing! I don't think I've ever heard you play so well!"
I nervously chuckled and said, "Yeah, yeah Jaime it was just another song."
He put me down and starting jumping up and down, "No way Tone, I think we both killed it! I hope we hear from them soon!"
A few days later, we did. Jaime and I were sitting in the living room, watching TV with the guys when it did. We both gave Vic a special ringtone, so that if he called we'd know to answer it in private. When Jaime's phone rang, we both took off to my bedroom, yelling some dumb excuse. I shut the door behind us as Jaime answered the phone.
"Hello?" he said, trying to sound professional. I couldn't hear what Vic was saying, but after about 30 seconds, Jaime's face lit up and he smiled,
"Thank you so much Vic. Of course I'll tell him!" Tell who what? "Yeah, we'll see you soon!" See him soon?
Jaime hung and looked over at me, smiling widely, "We're in."
