When Miles Break Hearts

Follow The Stem

TONY'S POV

The bus came to a hault, jolting a little as we stopped. 'That's us,' said Mike, picking his wallet up off the table.

'Home sweet home,' sighed Vic.

We all got up and made our way off the bus, the warm San Diego air kissing our skin. Collecting our bags, we all headed or seperate ways once we had got our luggage. It had been a year long tour and it was the longest holiday we were going to have since the band had been formed.

'Tony, honey!' exclaimed my Mum, pulling me into a hug at the door. 'He's home!' she shouted over her shoulder, pulling me in the house soon after.

I went through to the livingroom to find my Dad sitting in his chair with a bag of chips in one hand. He smiled at me, offering a chip. He never was one for showing much affection.

'Thanks,' I said, taking one out of the packet.

'Tell us, tell us all about your tour,' demanded my Mum. 'Was it good? Did you meet anyone?'

'It was amazing,' I admitted. My mind fell back to the countless parties where we all got terribly drunk. There was also the days that we met fans - they'd tell us how we'd saved them, how they loved our music and give us loads of awesome gifts. Some stories (both from the drunk parties and the fans) were inappropriate for the ears of my parents, so I played it safe and began to tell them one of my favourites about the show where the other band we were with (A Day To Remember) pranked us during our set.

Once story time was over, I excused myself and decided to bed. As soon as I entered my room, a tsunami of memories hit me. I looked at the DVD player and noticed the box for 'Meet The Fockers' on top, the last movie I watched with Julie. I swallowed the lump in my throat, and took another step into the room. I glanced at my desk to see a pile of homework that had accumulated and, to this day, remains uncompleted. I looked up at my whiteboard and read everything on it aloud.

'Owe Vic $10. Always keep Saturday evenings open (for Julie). 6/3/2010 Chemistry test!' Laughing at myself, I followed a stem I'd drawn down to the very bottom of the board. It progressively shrunk as it went down, finally stopping just above a sentence. Squinting my eyes, I leaned in so that I could read it.

'Tell Julie you love her.'

Quickly snapping back, I turned away from the board as if it was watching me. Feeling uneasy, I hurried into my pajamas and went to bed, trying desperately to block out the thoughts of the girl I was hopelessy in love with.

This is going to be a hard month.
