Pick Me Up

Walk

*Jaime’s POV*

“Vic, can you please just let me walk the rest of the way. The place is only half an hour away” I pleaded.

“But Jaime, we’re in the middle of nowhere in Australia, you have no idea where you’re going or how to get there” Vic pleaded back. Vic cared so much for my safety, and so did Tony and Mike, however they were just letting Vic argue with me for them.

“I’ll put it in google maps and I’ll meet you at the hotel” I pleaded once more. Vic was silent, seemingly trying not to let me win. “Come on Vic please, I just can’t be stuck on this bus anymore. I really need to walk to get my mind off things and get the stress out of my system”

Vic looked at Tony and Mike who stood beside him. They both sided with Vic in that it was too dangerous for me to walk to our hotel, but sympathised with me in that everyone knew I walked or played my guitar or did something physical to let stress out of my system. Tony tried to convince me to go play my bass guitar in the back of the bus but I told him that just wasn’t going to help. I felt like I needed to scream and let it all out in the middle of nowhere.

“Look Vic, I’ll just put the hotel name in google maps and I’ll follow it. I’ll be at the hotel in no time and feel better. All I need is a walk. I’m a grown man Vic” I said the last part of my sentence sternly. Well because I meant it. I’m a grown man who can follow google maps to a hotel. Heck I’ve done it a thousand times in the European countries when I was blind drunk. “And if I get lost or I need to get back on the bus, I’ll call you”.

Vic held his breath, whilst Tony and Mike seemingly shrugged their shoulders in defeat having been convinced of my argument. Vic let out his breath, sighing in defeat as well. He angrily took my phone, put the name of the hotel in it and said to me in his most stern voice that it was only a 45 minute walk and I should not be any later than an hour. Vic was really concerned for my safety, and so was everyone else, including myself, however, I really just needed to walk. I needed a release.

I thanked them and told them that’ll be there in an hour and that I’ll be better once I got there. They each ‘bro-hugged’ me and told me to be safe. I left the bus and the bus took off, reluctantly. Finally, I could walk. I could breathe.

Once outside and alone, I breathed in the fresh Australian air. The air was somewhat cold and I looked up to find what seemed like rain clouds. I checked my phone and the weather app told me that Sydney was expecting rain late this afternoon. I growled to myself. Of course.

Outside was quiet and still with only the sound of animals and birds in the forest and the occasional rumble of a car driving past. The silence was beautiful, it was healing almost. The silence seemed to be calming the voices in my head and slowing my violent thoughts. I continued to keep walking, almost strolling along the side of the road, taking in every view of the Australian landscape, whilst also monitoring the clouds above. They seemed to be getting darker and denser. And almost right on cue, I heard the roar of thunder, alerting me that rain was surely coming. And that I will be caught in the middle of it.

However, I sighed and let it be. The rain seemed to be appropriate considering what I’m going through. Maybe the rain will help me wash away the troubles in my mind like having hot showers helps to wash away troubles.

But my moment of calm was short lived. My phone rang from my pocket to which I assumed it was one of the guys checking up on me considering I’ve been walking now for about 20 minutes. But it wasn’t them. It was Jess.

Feeling an instantaneous rage erupt inside of me, I threw my phone to the road as hard as I could. My case had shattered, which caused my phone to bounce into a nearby puddle on the road and shatter my screen. I picked up my phone after taking a few heavy breaths to calm my rage to find my phone wouldn’t turn on. My phone was fucked.
