Don't Make This Easy

November 1st, 2010

I sat with my dad at the family of the bride table, both of us having a beer and watching as Kate and Matt had their first dance together while Vic and his band played a song that he had written specially for this moment.

“They're so cute it's almost disgusting.” I said, pretending to gag.

“I have to agree with you there.” My dad chuckled as he took a sip of his beer. “So, how's it feel to have your first legal drink with the old man?” He asked.

My twenty-first birthday was just a few weeks ago. Kate and Matt made sure that I would be able drink at their wedding so that I could ‘have some real fun’ as they put it.

“It's nice, I can finally enjoy a beer with you without mom coming over screaming at you.” I laughed.

“Still gotta worry about Grams though.” Dad laughed. “Crazy old woman still thinks you're nine years old.”

“Are you talking about me?” Grams asked, suddenly appearing out of nowhere. “I heard you Sonny. Don't you think I don't know when you're talking smack.”

And as quickly as she appeared, she was gone again. Dad and I both just looked at each other and busted out laughing. The song ended and Kate headed over to our table.

“Oh, I think it's time for the father daughter dance.” I said. “Better put your dancing shoes on pops.”

“Oh I always have my dancing shoes on.” He said as he got up and took Katelynn’s hand.

They walked onto the dance floor and the DJ started playing My Wish by Rascal Flatts. I watched as they danced, my head resting on my hand. Even after three years of living out here, it was still weird being a family again. Good weird, but still weird nonetheless.

“Whatcha thinking about there, lovely maid of honor?” Vic asked as he sat down next to me. I sat up straight and shook my head.

“Nothing, it's just nice being a family again. Three years ago I didn't think I would be here to see my sister wedding, let alone be in it.” I told him. Vic just nodded and sipped his own beer.

“So, you almost done with your classes so you can hit the road with us full time? Enjoy the rockstar life?” He asked. I laughed and nodded.

“I actually just finished my last class.” I told him. “I'm just waiting on my new camera and lenses to come in, should only be a day or so.”

“Great, we have a tour that we leave for on the tenth if you're up for joining us.” He said.

“I was born ready, dude.” I laughed. Vic laughed too and then stood up.

“Since everyone else is joining in, can the best man ask the maid of honor to dance?” He asked, holding his hand out to me. I took one last sip of my beer, then took his hand and followed him onto the dance floor.

“They really have one of the most beautiful weddings I've seen.” I said, as I rested my hands on Vic’s shoulder and looked around the room.

“I'm sure you can top it.” He joked. I laughed and rolled my eyes.

“Doubtful. I don't think I'm ever getting married.” I said.

“Why not?” Vic laughed.

“Dude, have you seen my ‘find a asshole or bitch and get cheated on’ track record for the past three years?” I laughed. “Never gonna happen.”

“Well, I happen to know someone that isn't a douchebag, definitely won't cheat on you, and you actually would get along with quite well” He said.

“Oh yeah?” I asked. “Who is this miracle man and what fairy tale is he from?” I joked.

“His name is Tony, and he's from a story called The Piercing of the Veil.” I laughed and shook my head at his horrible joke.

“First of all, that was lame as hell.” I said, trying to calm my laughter. “Second, I'm not getting involved Tony, he's one of my best friends, it's not happening.”

“Come on, you guys would be great together.” He laughed. I rolled my eyes at him and shook my head. He and the guys had been trying to get us together for almost two years now

“Not happening.” I said again.

“May I cut in?” I looked up and smiled when I saw my dad.

“Of course.” Vic said with a smile, and then disappeared into the crowd.

“So, you and Vic seem to get along pretty well.” My dad said as we started dancing.

“Yeah, I mean I'm only with him, Matt and Kate every time they hangout. And you know I'm gonna be working for them next week.” I laughed.

“Next week?” He asked. I nodded and he frowned. “Both of my girls are leaving me at the same time.” He said, fake sobbing. I laughed and rolled my eyes.

“Oh you'll be fine dad, I'll be back in like a month. Just gives you and mom some, somewhat more alone time.” I laughed. “I mean you still got Grams to worry about but she's crazy.” He laughed and nodded.

“That's very true.” He said. “But seriously, you and Vic, you can't see anything going on there? I mean I know he's almost seven years older than you but he's a great guy and you're already pretty close-”

“Daddy!” I laughed, slapping his arm. “Stop trying to set me up. First Vic, now you. Jeez.”

“I know, I know. You're focusing on your career, not dating.” He laughed. “I just want you to be happy.”

“I am happy dad, and I'll find someone eventually, when I'm ready.”

“I know you will darling.” He said as he kissed my forehead.

The song ended and then it was time for Matt and Kate to cut the cake. My dad went and sat with my mom, Grams, Uncle Mark, Aunt Carla and Zack, and I grabbed my beer and sat with Vic and the guys since one of our other cousins had stolen my seat.

“Aren't you supposed to be at the family table or the wedding party table?” Vic asked as I sat down next to him. I nodded and took a sip of my beer.

“Senile grandmother and jealous cousin who's mad I'm the maid of honor and she isn't, don't make for great company.” I said. “Plus, seeing how you're not at the wedding party table either, someone's gotta keep track of the best man.” I told him as I put my arm around his shoulders. He just laughed and shook his head.

We watched in amusement as they cut the cake and Kate smashed her entire piece into Matt's face. He tried to do the same but didn't succeed. He got a bit on her face and the rest fell onto her dress, which she just laughed hysterically about. After that we all got out cake and sat back down at our table.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see my dad.

“Time for your speeches.” He said to Vic and I.

We both got up and headed up to the wedding party table. I sat down in my seat and Vic took the mic and stayed standing.

“Hey can I have everyone's attention?” He said. The room quieted down and everyone looked at him.

“I'm gonna keep this short and sweet because I know Jacie is just dying to give her speech.” He said, sending a smirk my way. I rolled my eyes and shook my head.

“Matty Boy, we've been friends for seven years now and let me just say, damn you're getting old. You're married, you just turned 28, you're growing up man. And I gotta say, you couldn't have picked anyone better to keep the attention away from those grey hairs. Or maybe she'll bring attention to them because she's sassy like that and has fun roasting people, who knows. But on a real note, you guys are an amazing couple, and I'm so glad that I not only got to be here, but be part of my two best friend's wedding. I hope you guys have a long, wonderful, attitude filled life together.” He said and held his glass up to them. He then passed the mic to me and took his seat. I stood up and shifted my weight awkwardly.

“So, I really suck at public speaking, and speeches in general, my family already knows this and I'm sure most of my friends do too. So I'm gonna keep this even more brief than Vic’s.” I started. “Katie, you are the absolute best big sister that anyone could ever ask for. And Matt, you've very quickly grown to become the brother I never asked for. I honestly don't think I've ever seen my sister as happy as she is with you, so thank you. And Katie, all I can say is I'm so glad that I moved here and was able to be part of your wedding, hell, you even included my dog, which he loved by the way. I love you both, and I hope you two have a wonderful life together.”

I went to hand the mic back to the DJ but Zack stopped me and I handed it to him instead.

“I'm just gonna jump in here real quick.” He said. “I'm not the best man, or the maid of honor. But I am the best cousin. I just want to say congrats to you guys. I don't really know you Matt, but I can see that you make Katie happy and that's all that matters. And I would also like to say that I have a surprise for you, so just sit right for a minute.” He handed the mic off to the DJ and then left the room.

I looked at Kate questioningly, silently asking her if she knew what he was doing, and she just shrugged. A couple minutes later he came back in the room and I clenched my jaw shut tightly. Behind Zack, came Rian, Jack, and Alex, all with their instruments for an acoustic performance. The DJ brought them stools and extra mics and the all sat down and got ready.

“I just wanna say congrats to the bride and groom real quick.” Alex said into the mic. “I don't really have many songs about successful relationships, but I have some slow ones that will somewhat work for this occasion.”

They all started playing Remembering Sunday and I just rested my head in my hand and stared down at the table while they played. Everyone got up and started dancing, including my mom and dad. They finished the song and went straight into Lullabies. I felt someone tap on my shoulder and looked up.

“You okay?” Vic asked. I nodded and sipped my wine.

“Yeah, fantastic.” I said sarcastically.

“Here, instead of sitting here where he can see that he's getting so you, just come sit back at our table. You can hide behind the crowd.” He said. I nodded, grabbed my wine glass, and took his hand. He led me over to the table and I sat with him, Mike, Tony, and Jaime.

“Well you look worse for wear.” Mike laughed.

“Yeah, well I didn't realize that my cousin was bringing my ex here.” I said.

“Wait, one of them is your ex?” Jaime asked. I just nodded and took a big sip of my wine. I never told any of them about Alex and I.

“How about we talk about something else so she doesn't drown herself in wine.” Vic suggested, laughing slightly.

Tony was about to say something but my eyes went wide when I heard the first few notes of them next song.

“This one is a little bit of a special song to me. And I'd like to dedicate it to the maid of honor.” Alex said. “Jacie Rae, I'm so sorry.”

I clenched my fists and squeezed my eyes shut as he started singing. I felt like I was going to be sick.

“Mike, tell me you brought your cigarettes with you.” I said as I opened my eyes. Mike pulled his pack half out of his pocket and got up.

“Come on. Let's get you out of here.” He said as he came around the table and took my hand.
