the story of us

one

For as long as she could remember, there was a voice in Aiden's head that would not stop singing. When she was younger, the voice was brushed off as her eyes imaginary friend that loved to sing. Then she started to get older, and while the signing got few and far between at first, there began to be an almost constant stream of singing by the time she reached grade 9, and that scared the living crap out of her. Of course, Aiden ran to her parents, sobbing over the fact that she was a freak and was going to have to be locked away in a mental institution for the rest of her life.

That was when Aiden finally learned about soulmates.

As it turned out, the singing voice in her head belonged to her soulmate, the one who was supposed to be the missing part of her soul or heart or something like that- teenage Aiden didn't particularly fancy the particular idea at the time, but as she grew older, she wished she'd payed more attention. Either way, she had no bloody clue who this "soulmate" of hers was supposed to be, and that hadn't really changed in the many years since she first learned about all of this.

Aiden was dying to know who the man behind the voice was, but it wasn't as prevalent in her mind as it once had been. Now, as she struggled to be a "proper adult" and make sure her entire income wasn't spent on vintage records, she focused less on finding the one she was destined to be with forever and focused more making ends meet as an artist.

Of course, she never forgot about the voice in her head. In fact, it was almost impossible to forget considering the voice practically never left. Aiden eventually concurred that her soulmate was some sort of professional vocalist with all the singing he did- not that she minded all the much. The voice was that of an angel, an angel that sang a lot about pain, death, and a some other mature subjects, but it was angelic nonetheless. She didn't mind listening to the voice going on and on, especially when he started singing some of her own favorite tunes, but Aiden did have to admit it was at times a little distracting.

"Aiden? Aide, you listenin'?"

The voice of her best friend was enough to shake the 27 year old out of her thoughts- and the listening session of the familiar singing -and stare at the curious red head in front of her with some mild guilt.

"Sorry Rue," Aiden spoke, her freckled cheeks flushing in embarrassment, "what were you saying?"

A bubbly laugh tumbled out of Rue's mouth as she shook her head, her ginger locks swaying around her shoulders. "Listening to him again, eh?" she questioned, already knowing the answer to her own question. "Bloody hell Aide, it's almost pointless talking to you sometimes when all you do is daydream about the man of your dreams-"

"I do not daydream!" Aiden retorted, playfully swatting at her friend's arm from across the small, cafe table. "He just has a really nice voice, that's all. And besides! Not everyone is lucky enough to find their soulmate in Uni, Rue!"

Rue laughed at that, shrugging a bit in reply before adding, "What can I say? I love me a girl who can make a mean milkshake- although I must say, you've got the better end of the bargain here, Emelia cannot sing for shit."

A mock gasp fell from Aiden's lips, her hands flying up to her mouth. "I'm telling Emelia you said that-"

"Oh shut it!" Rue laughed, taking her turn to swat at Aiden's arm from across the table. "I love that girl to death, but you know just as well as I that she is tone deaf."

Aiden, chuckling herself, nodded in agreement, hearing the glorious singing of Emelia on more than one occasion. "Alright, I'll give you that one."

"Thank you," Rue replied, shaking her head for a moment before taking a sip of her tea. "Speaking of Em, I was wondering if you have any plans tonight?"

Finding the wording at least a little odd, Aiden shook her head, her eyebrows furrowing together in confusion. "No, my schedule is clear for the evening, why do you ask?"

"Well," Rue begins, the last syllable trailing off innocently, "Em is home sick with with the flu, and I don't know if you remember, but there's this concert tonight I've been dying to go to and I was wondering if you'd want to go in her place?"

Admittedly, Aiden was interested in the prospect of going to a concert, but she was still a bit hesitant. "I don't know Rue," she began, "for starters, I don't know the band playing or even if I have the money-"

"But you just got paid yesterday!" Rue whined. "Besides, you wouldn't have to pay me back for the ticket, it was already going to be used as it is."

"Rue, you know I love going to shows and listening to new bands, but-"

"Aiden please! Em can't go and she was only originally going to go because I didn't want to go alone. Now she's sick and I really want to go but not by myself." Rue sighed and pouted a little, staring into the last of her tea before looking back up at her coffee haired best friend. "The band is from America, Aide, and I really really love them, and I honestly have no clue when they'd be able to come back again. Please Aide, for me? I swear I'll make it up to you if you go with me."

Aiden saw the forlorn look on her best friend's face, and she knew then and there that she had to go. After all, she knew that feeling all too well, wanting to see a band you loved with all your heart and soul just for that chance to be squashed like a bug. She certainly couldn't do that to her best friend, now could she?

With a small smile, Aiden spoke up. "Alright Rue, I'll go with you- but you have to buy me Nandos when the concert is done!"

"Deal!" Rue agreed, nodding her head in excitement and grabbing her best friend's hand as a gesture of gratitude. "Thank you thank you thank you so much Aide! You're not going to regret this, I swear!"

"I'm sure I won't," Aiden agreed with a chuckle. "But you still haven't told me the name of the band we're going to be seeing tonight!"

"Oh right!" Rue exclaimed, a bright smile suddenly adorning her face. "The band is called Pierce The Veil, and they're a little out of your usual music genre, but I feel like you're going to love them!"
