Beauty Queen in Tears

two.

It was day five of working at 7-11 and Anna still hadn't given me the fifty bucks she said she would. Not that I was too worried about it. I didn't honestly think she would pay up. Work was pretty easy. There were four other people that worked in the store (the Taco Bell side was a whole different story) with me. There was Angela, who was in charge of the whole operation. Jona, a sandy-haired high school student who was saving up to buy a car. Madison, the quiet brunette with big eyes. And finally, there was Jennifer, the sassy 'not Latina' who got loud if you assumed her country of origin was anywhere other than Egypt. I worked second shift, which happened to be my favorite because business wasn't as busy as it was during the day. All I really did was sit behind the counter and flip through countless magazines and get paid for it. Working for a living wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. To make things better I hadn't even encountered my first rude customer yet.

Madison appeared beside me, tapping her fingers against the counter. "Hey, Syd." It took everything in me not to cringe at the nickname. If there was anything I hated more than people trying to pass off fake designer clothing as the real thing, it was being called Syd. I cocked an eyebrow at her, successfully hiding my annoyance. She pointed her finger down one of the aisles, my gaze landing on someone I had definitely seen before. "He's been here like twice a day for the past three days."

I wanted to laugh out loud at the notion. Maybe it was just me being big-headed, but I assumed I made such an impression on the random Mexican from the other day that he was staking out the 7-11 for the next time he saw me. As he approached the counter with a twenty-four pack of Tecate, of course, I pursed my lips to keep from smirking. I picked up the scan gun and lit it over the barcode. "ID please." He smiled lopsidedly before digging his wallet out of his back pocket. He slid it across the counter and in a split moment I decided to take advantage of the new found information and figure out what his name was. Victor Vincent Fuentes. Again, I clenched my jaw to keep from laughing. He was a walking Mexican stereotype.

One of his friends from the other day shoved open the door and walked straight up to him, eyeing the box of beer. "Wait." He started, "Why are you buying that?"

Victor gave him a look that said it all. It was as if he was trying to say something without me (and I guess Madison since she was lurking around) knowing what it was. "Remember?" He cleared his throat, emphasis on the word. "We ran out of beer."

His friend stared at him with a confused expression on his face. "No, we didn't. We have like three cases at home because you keep getting more."

I couldn't hold it in anymore. I snorted out loud, covering my mouth with the back of my hand. Victor turned three shades of red before whispering something to his friend I didn't quite make out. His friend, who finally got the gist of what was going on, chuckled before patting him on the back and leaving the store. I could feel the embarrassment radiating off of Victor's body, and me being the way that I am - had to make things worse for him.I just had to.

"I never knew our little exchange would be enough to leave a lasting impression." I teased, wiggling my eyebrows at him. I hit the total button, "16.99."

He let out a small sigh, looking away from me as he held up a bank card and then slid it. "It's not that I-"

"Oh no, it's fine. You could've made things easier on yourself and actually spoken to me instead of buying a case of beer every time y'know - you stopped by to see if I was there." I told him, tearing the receipt out of the machine when it was done printing.

He shrugged, obviously at a loss for words. I pouted slightly, it wasn't as fun if he was stumbling over his words and running for cover. I grinned, "Have a nice night, Victor."

That made him look up at me, a subtle smile on his lips. "It's Vic."

I nodded, "Well then. Nice meeting you, Vic. Next time you wanna stalk me try not to be so obvious."

He laughed and it sounded more nervous than amused, waving the hand that held the receipt awkwardly. Finally he grabbed the case of beer with the other hand and exited the store.

Literally half a second later, Madison was at my side asking me how I was so confident and blah blah blah. I was kind of disappointed in the fact that there wasn't a horde of customers to keep Madison busy. I swore she was going to make my ears fall off from all the talking. I learned how to tune her out about an hour in. I got off at eight on the dot, Jona showing up to take my place.

I sprinted back to Anna's house the minute I left the 7-11. She lived in a good neighborhood but I wasn't taking any chances to get mugged. There were a few cars parked along the sidewalk that I didn't recognize. I groaned out loud knowing that I was going to have to socialize with strangers who probably recently took up knitting as a hobby. I pushed open the front door and heard laughing come from the backyard. I narrowed my eyes as I slipped my Vans off. (Tracking dirt into the house was the easiest way to bring death upon me.) I sucked in a breath and tried to tiptoe to the bathroom but of course, Anna had to catch sight of me before I was able to.

"Sydney, come meet some of my friends!" She yelled.

I whined out loud, flailing my arms around while I was still out of sight. I drug myself towards the french doors, leaning against the frame when I caught sight of something that instantly made my night that much better. "Well, well, well." I started, a smirk easing its way onto my lips. "If it isn't Vic. Did you follow me home?"

"N-no I swear!" He stammered, getting up from his patio seat. His friends laughed at the circumstance, obviously they were clued in. Anna just looked confused.

"Ah, I'm just fucking with you. It's a small world."

"I'm not even going to ask." Anna sighed, "Anyways, Sydney. These are some of my friends." They all waved at me as if they had practiced beforehand. Actually, Anna probably did make them rehearse this beforehand. "Meet Mike, Tony, Jaime, and - well. I see you already know Vic." She looked deflated as she pointed each one of them out.

I raised my hand in a salute. "Alright, can I go now?"

Anna rolled her eyes, "As if you really need my permission." She held up a finger before I left. "But come back outside I'm making carne asada." She said gesturing to the grill Jaime was setting up. I nodded, although it wasn't very enthusiastic. Working in close proximity to a Taco Bell wasn't the best thing ever (even if I initially though it was). It was only a few days later and I was sick to my stomach at the mere idea of tacos because I ate them every day for lunch.

I skipped into the living room and plopped down onto the couch, kicking my feet up to rest them on the arm. I turned the TV on and flipped through the channels before leaving it on MTV. Teen Mom re-runs were everything to me. I almost dozed off in what felt like twenty minutes, until someone threw themselves onto the couch making it sink under their weight.

"Rude, you're invading my room." I groaned, peeling open an eye to see who it was. Vic grinned at me and snaked his way under my legs, letting them rest over his lap.

He raised an eyebrow in question. "Your room?"

I gestured around the couch. "Yes, this is my room."

Vic's expression stayed clueless, as if he wasn't processing any of the information. "Why do you live on Anna's couch?"

"It's none of your business but my boyfriend dumped me and he was the one who took care of me so it's back to square one." I hoped that my words had come out strong like I was over what happened literally over a week ago but I knew that I was shaking at my core. It was tough pretending that I didn't have any feelings, that my heart wasn't bruised. I gave myself to a man I honestly thought I was going to marry, only to be kicked to the curb like last years Prada.

Vic frowned slightly. "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."

"It's okay, he had a small dick anyways." I said waving him off. Part of me expected (and hoped) he would have retreated and went back to hanging out in the backyard with everyone else, but he didn't. Vic sat in silence while I pretended to be a sleep. If that wasn't determination then I didn't know what was.

I stretched my legs out, yawning. "This is weird. I don't know even know you."

Vic chuckled slightly, "You do know me."

"I know your name." I retorted, glancing over at him.

He shrugged, "Anna trusts me."

I nodded my head. "Touché."

It got quiet again and like before I expected Vic to walk away. But he didn't. "I'm sorry about creeping on you."

"It's whatever."

"Yeah..." He trailed off.

It was weird. I could feel the tension (sexual, maybe?) floating around the room but at the same time I was so comfortable in his presence. There was something about him that made me want to get to know him and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It was frustrating to be so confused about something that should be known at first sight. If a dozen men were put into a room and I had to pick one out of the line-up Vic wouldn't have been one of my first few choices. He was the exact opposite of every single guy I've dated. Maybe that's why I was so attracted to the idea. Not like I was going to date him anytime soon. But being friends didn't hurt.

He leaned back against the couch and let out a deep breath. "I like you."

"We're not in elementary school," I pointed out, "and I'm in no position to be liked by someone."

He turned his head to lock eyes with me, a faint smile on his lips. I could tell that he knew what was going on in my head. "So, it's like that?"

I nodded. "It's like that."

"Alright," he held his hand out, his fingertips grazing over the denim of my jeans. "Friends?"

I grabbed his hand and shook it firmly. "Friends."

He smiled, exposing all of his teeth. Usually I'd find someone smiling like that creepy but when it was coming from him it was sort of endearing. "For now." He added seconds later.

I didn't bother correcting him and just chuckled in response.

I adore this so far! The thought to detail, such as the relatibility of Sydney's character and her storyline, make the story much more interesting and enjoyable, a quality not always present in online stories. As a result, I am so excited to see how the summary you gave will tie into the story, and I wholly intend to stick around and find out. You have a real piece of art here; can't wait to see your further interpretation of it.
