Was it really your time?

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce the selfish machine

I woke up just in time.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sydney Airport. Local time is 9am and the temperature is 14 degrees Celsius. On behalf of Air Charter International and the entire crew, I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice day!”

I heard the Captain spoke. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I slowly opened my eyes to see my wife already holding our son in the sling carrier. Then I looked around to see everyone already up in their seats and hustling to get their bags in the compartment. Quinn is still on Mike’s arms, sleeping.

“Hi.” She said. “We’re here. I asked them not to wake you up since I know that you haven’t slept in a long while. Are you hungry? I asked my sister to pick us up. We’ll just get you something to eat on the way home, okay?”

I gave her a plain, dry nod. My pissed gaming remained strong. Call me immature, what she did really got to me. And then I did what everyone else is doing. I got our bags and readied myself to get off the plane.

It’s freezing in Australia. The sun is shining very brightly but the cold air hit my face. Fall is just starting. I still feel a little lightheaded from the flight. We all agreed to go to our house here first and then have lunch at the McDougall’s. The smile on everyone’s faces is priceless. I’m sure Whak, Jake, Cam, and Matt are all thrilled to be back home.

We arrived at the gate to see Jenna’s older sister, Teresa waving at us. I’ve only met her twice: on our wedding night, and the weekend she spent at the house because she’s shooting a movie nearby and Jenna wants to spend time with her. I was barely around that weekend though. But we get along fine. I was actually surprised to see her in Australia since she moved to America long before Jenna did because of her acting career.

“Hi! Oh my god, is that my new nephew?” She said taking Caleb from Jenna.

“You’re home! Why are you home? Did you do something illegal?” Jenna teased and Tez stuck out her tongue on her. “I missed you. You didn’t even come to see me at the hospital!” Jenna half hugged her and then she turned to look at me.

“Yeah, this is actually me making it up to you.” She said and then turned to me. “Victor, how are you doing?”

“I’m good. Hi!” I said half hugging her too. “You remember my guys, right? From the wedding?”

And then everyone waved her hi. I had a look around to see two guys with camera snapping photos of us. It’s not an unusual thing for me but I guess they’re here for Tez. She might’ve noticed the look on my face.

“I’m sorry about that. How bout we just all go? The Limo is waiting outside.” She said.

I gave her a polite nod. I guess the Tonight Alive dudes couldn’t handle the jet lag plus hungover they have so they said that they will just meet us at lunch. I think they also needed to come home to their families; it’s been a long time.

I found myself moments later inside the car. I sat by the window. The guys and their girls seem to get along very well with Teresa as well. They’re all laughing and teasing each other. I, on the other hand, am not having such a great time. I just sat quiet and watch the scene outside the window.

I felt Jenna’s hands ran up my arm. “Hey, are you okay?”

I turned to look at her. “Yeah.” I replied and then looked away again.

“Vic, is it still about me laughing at you?” She asked. “I said I was sorry.”

“I know. It’s fine.”

“Come on. I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s just hair, and I apologized.” She said trying to keep her volume at the minimum.

“I said it’s fine.” But it’s really not. I don’t know why I’m acting this way either. I’m not usually like this. I’m just really pissed at it.

And then she ran a hand through her hair. “Hey, can we have a stop at the gas station for a while? I need to get something from the groceries.” She said to the driver.

And the driver did. We pulled over to the gas station and Jenna got off the car. I watched her walk to the grocery store. I took out my phone as we waited for her to get back, it’s 2pm in San Diego. I held my arms up and rested my head in them. We still have a few hours till show time. I wonder what fun things we could do till then.

“Oh my god.” I turned to Teresa, who seemed to have an amused look on her face as she stared outside the window. I was curious and so I turned my head too. There is Jenna, laughing and talking to another guy. I felt heat rising up to my chin. Stop, Vic. Don’t get too paranoid. Maybe he’s just a fan. I thought. Except he doesn’t look like a guy who’d be into our music. He’s wearing a khaki tuxedo, and his brown hair is so perfectly fixed and brushed backwards. He actually looks like…like a model, and if I’m being really honest, it looks a bit much. He looks like he’s photoshopped, you know kinda like Ryan Gosling in that movie Crazy Stupid Love.

“Is that Timothy Murdock? That’s Timothy Murdock!” Teresa said.

I know Timothy Murdock. He’s Jenna’s first boyfriend. She mentioned him to me once. We were listening to their song The Other Side and it just occurred to me to ask her who she was talking about in the song. She didn’t really say much other than the song is inspired by her ex Tim from high school. Fuck, this guy is Jenna’s first kiss, Jenna’s first crush, Jenna’s first everything.

“Who is Timothy Murdock?” Jaime asked.

It didn’t take much. I got off the car and started to walk their direction. She is laughing and talking to him. What was she laughing about? Is she actually flirting with him in front of me?

I still heard the whispers from the limo. I heard Tez whispered, “Ex.” And Jaime replied, “Uh oh jealous boyfriend.” And Jess smacked him on the chest and said, “Shut up.”

I ignored this. I had my hands in my hoodie as I walked to them. Jenna noticed me approaching and smiled nervously at me. “Hey, what took so long?” I hugged her and kissed the top of her head in front of him. This is my wife, and I don’t like sharing her with ex-boyfriends.

“Umm, this is Timothy Murdock. Umm, I think I’ve mentioned him to you.” Jenna said smiling.

“Mentioned. You’ve mentioned me?” The guy said. I have my back on him and my arms are still wrapped around Jenna’s waist.

“Of course.” She said chuckling. “Tim, this is Vic.” I still don’t wanna turn around. This guy is so physically perfect, how can I compete with this.

“Hey man.” And then I turned around. I stared at his hand for a while before shaking it.

“Vic Fuentes. Husband.” I said, putting more emphasis on the word husband.

“Well it’s great to finally meet you, Vic. And it’s great that you’re here in Australia. Are you guys just visiting or are you staying for good?” He said. His Australian accent is much stronger than Jenna’s.

“Just visiting.” I said clearing my throat. “We’re here for SoundWave.”

“Oh, well, it’s been great seeing you guys. I have to go. Jenna, it’s so great to see you again.” He said smiling charmingly to my wife.

“Great to see you too. You look great.” Jenna said. She gave her a quick hug which caused my face to burn. She can’t hug an ex! What the fuck. I’m so furious right now. But I can’t let them know, so I put on a fake smile and shook his hand once again.

The three of us started walking to the parking lot to our cars. I think the red convertible BMW is his. I’m extremely unhappy about this. I actually feel a little insecure right now. And fuck, he has nice hair. I fucking hate it that he has nice hair. But my confident façade has to stay strong. I intertwined our fingers together to show this Timothy Murdock who I am in Jenna’s life.

I thought he’s gonna go away and drive his car away from where he can’t find us anymore but he didn’t. He insisted on walking us to our limo.

“Thank you for walking us, Tim.” Jenna said.

“Tez?” Tim said recognizing Teresa inside the car.

“Hey, handsome.” Tez said.

“Hey, you’re home?” He asked.

“Yes, people, I am allowed to come home. What is up with you guys! God.” She replied tossing her hands up in the air.

“I’m sorry.” He said chuckling. “It’s great to see you though. Actually, can I get your autograph? I saw Lights Out and I swear to God, I didn’t turn my night light off for two weeks. That’s how scared I was. My favorite scene was the ending. You were so good in that. It’s just amazing, splendid work.”

“Shut up, dork. How about we just hang out soon?” She said. I looked a Jenna who’s awkwardly looking down. I held her closer to me. “Or why don’t you come over for lunch? Yeah, come over. Mom is just going to be so happy to see you again.”

I really wish I could disappear right now, just pop out like a bubble. I wanted to yell at them, tell them I’m here.

“Oh I wish I can. But I got a lunch appointment in an hour.” He replied. “But um, we can hang out at SoundWave, you know like before.” He said looking at Jenna.

“Yeah, call me!” Teresa replied.

“Well, this has been wonderful. I love reunions. But we have got to go.” I said. I couldn’t take it anymore. I went inside the car slightly dragging Jenna with me. I made sure I slammed the car door pretty hard. “Nice seeing you, man.” I said poking my head out the window. I told the driver to go and we did.

The rest of the drive was quiet. Nobody talked. Jenna just stared at her phone. “Well, I’m excited for lunch.” I said putting an arm around her. She smiled at me but I felt the awkwardness.

We arrived at house a few minutes later. Man, I’ve missed this. We bought this house two years ago. Quinn was about one. We rarely use it since we’re both busy with work and we’re always touring. It’s a house located near the lake. It’s a very beautiful spot for family gatherings since it has a huge backyard facing the lake. It’s basically a lake cabin with six bedrooms and two living rooms.

We pulled over in front. Everyone got off the car, got their luggage and started to walk inside. Everyone looks so thrilled and excited to spend time here.

“Wow.” Jessica said, looking around. “This place is amazing.”

It is guys’ first time here. They’ve never seen the house personally before, even Mike. Like I said, we rarely use this house. But it’s always a great place for us to escape. If we’re both touring Australia, we’d sneak and come down here for a night or two.

“You think there’s room for all of us?” Tony asked, looking around.

“Oh yeah, I think there’s room.” Erin replied.

“Okay.” Jenna said, “There’s ten of us, and there are only six bedrooms, only four has a bathroom in it. The one on the second floor to the right is for the kids.”

“Dibs!” Jamie yelled. And everyone started grabbing their partners and ran around to find room.

Only me, Jenna, Quinn, Caleb and Teresa were left. “Hey bout you?” I turned to Tez.

“Nah, I’m already staying at Mom’s. It’s not every day that I get to spend time with them.” She said.

“Oh okay.” I then turned to Jenna. “Please tell me you locked the master’s.”

She held out a key and said, “Don’t worry. I got us covered. Go put the bags in the bedroom. I’ll change Caleb and then I’ll help you set up.”

Notes

so I just saw Lights Out and im terribly obsessed abt Teresa Palmer. I sorta see 2014 Jenna in her. Maybe because her character in Lights Out is like a complete rocker. She has posters of Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica and lots of other bands in her bedroom which is so cool. And the fact the she's Australian destroyed me. And so yeah, she became Jenna's sister. Plus I couldn't find the real name of Jenbug's sister so yeah. The pictures of the cabin is from Walton Architecture and Engineering.
