Was it really your time?

When I burn to your fingertips, you can throw what's left

By the time everyone boarded the plane, Quinn is already sleeping. She insisted on sitting beside Mike and Alysha. The plane’s pretty cozy. There are lots of two by two armchair seats facing each other. Of course, Whak and the other dudes already started drinking even before the plane could take off. I, on the other hand, just asked for a glass of sparkling champagne. I told Tony and the other guys not drink unless they want to do the show jetlagged and hungover as fuck.

The plane took off and everyone became busy with their own businesses. Mike and Alysha went sleeping, Jaime and Jess joined the dudes playing poker, and Tony and Erin watched a movie. We already fixed Caleb who is sleeping so soundly on the seat in front of us. I turned to my wife who’s so busy doing something with her phone. I’m worried about her. And then she turned her head on me. She might’ve noticed me staring.

“What?” She asked. “Nothing.” I said, putting an arm around her. She scooted closer so her head is on my shoulder. “Are you okay?”

“Mhhm..” She replied. “You sure?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Nothing. I just wanna make sure you’re happy and healthy. You know that’s what matters the most to me, right?” I said kissing the top of her head.

“I’m okay, babe. I swear.”

“Are you excited? Because I am. Show me everything.” This is the first time that we’re going to Australia for a vacation, right?” I asked. The last time we went there was just for work and she barely spent time with me. I really wanted to know the places where she grew up and stuff but we were just so busy. And I am just realizing it now that we’ve never had a pure vacation. The last time we went out of the country for pure leisure was our honeymoon.

“Vic, you’ve already met my whole family. There is nothing much that I could show you. “ She said. “I know, but I really wanna see the places where you used to hang out with your friends, and your school, and stuff like that.” I said.

“Okay fine.” She said laughing. “Just don’t say I didn’t warn you. The high school version of myself is so different and…I don’t know. Different.”

“High school you is cute. I’ve seen pictures circling all around the internet.” I said. “What pictures?!” She said jumping from my embrace. I took out my phone and showed her a bunch of pictures of her playing drums for a high school jazz band.

“Whaaaaat the heck. Where did they get this? Oh man.” She said laughing. That cute laugh, man.

“Why are you so surprised? Your fans are crazy. They know everything about you. They know how you want your coffee in the morning, which foods you are allergic to, what bath soap and shampoo you’re using…and all other girly shit. They may even know stuff about you that I don’t.” I said. I have to say, I’ve never really thought about it at first, but now that I have I’m nervous. But that’s what marriage is. I know that we still have so much to learn about each other. That’s what I asked for in the ICU.

“Shut up.” She said wrapping her arms around my body and lightly slapping my chest. “I already told you everything significant that happened to me in the past. And it doesn’t matter anymore. I have you, and our two babies.” Then she looked up to face me. “Our family means the world to me.”

And I couldn’t help but smile back when she smiled at me. Getting lost in Jenna McDougall for the one millionth time. Dang, I get to have this for the rest of my life. Then she leaned in to kiss me, and I gave in. I pulled away and said, “Yeah, but I still wanna see.”

And she pressed her forehead against mine and just sighed. “Fine! Okay.”

I guess time really flies when you’re having fun. We went to join the guys in their poker game. The match ended up in Jaime winning but the guys said he cheated. And that’s definitely something Jaime would do to win a card game. All in all, it was a great time for everyone. After a few hours everyone is back in their own seats to get some sleep. We don’t wanna be tired and sore because we still have to do a show when we get there.

I had Jenna leaning against me as we lay on our seats. The plane is dark for we asked them to dim the lights. She had her head on my shoulder and her hand resting on my chest. I’m not really tired, honestly. I just wanna feel this moment. I put a hand on her arm that’s resting on my chest, gently caressing it with my fingers. She slowly opened her eyes and looked up at me.

“Hi.” She said smiling and kissing me. “Why are you awake? You should rest.”

“Hey, I just had an idea.” I said. I’ve been thinking about this for months now. I think it’s time. Jaime did it. Tony did it. And even my little brother Mike did it.

“Hmm?” She buried her face into my chest. It slightly sent chills down my spine as I felt the warmth of her breath as she inhaled and exhaled.

“I’m thinking of cutting my hair short. As in short.” I said. And then she immediately turned her head to face me once again.

“I’m sorry?” She said chuckling.

“I’m serious!” I responded. “I think it’s the proper dad haircut. And the band started out with all of us having long flowing hair. And they all already cut their hair. And I think it’s my turn.”

She choked when I said dad haircut. “Okay, I’m sorry. Um…yeah. I think—I think that’s—yeah” She said still choking and laughing.

“Yeah, you can laugh all you want. Jenna, I’m really serious about this. Quinn is gonna start school soon and I’m gonna have to drive her to it. I just don’t want other people to say stuff about how her dad has long weird rockstar hair. You don’t get me.” I said in my flat, normal tone. She shouldn’t make fun of this! I folded my arms and looked away.

“Right, yeah. I know. Okay. I’m sorry. You should do that.” She said, but still I wouldn’t look at her. “Okay, listen. You don’t need to cut your hair if you’re just worried of what other people might think. We like you this way. But if it really will make you feel better, then I think you should do it.”

I don’t know. I’m still really pissed that she laughed at it. I just wanna ensure a healthy and safe environment for our kids. And I think that cutting my hair, like what normal dads look like, will add up to it. I looked at her and saw her raising her eyebrow.

“Thank you.” I said, turning my back on her. I didn’t wanna make a big deal out of this, but I don’t know, my mood just suddenly changed. Maybe it’s the right time for me to sleep.
