Misadventures

Dive In

Another day, another life-sucking excuse of a schedule. I sighed as I stopped my ringing phone alarm and got out of bed. After such a long and eventful summer I had to endure another first day of school. Now, I’m not a child as some of you may think. I’m actually about to start college today. Hoo-freaking-ray.

I entered the bathroom of my apartment and turned on the water for my shower. Ugh, I thought, school. I was a little excited though. I was attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. If you know anything about this school you know it’s hard to get into and that tuition is freaking crazy. I’m lucky to have been accepted.

I couldn’t help but feel giddy as I showered. First day of classes, first day of new adventures and hopefully new friends. None of my friends from high school applied or got in to this school so it was just me on my own, hence why I’m in an apartment instead of a dorm on campus. I’m not that social of a person so I begged my parents and the residential living people to let me live off campus my first year. It worked out since my parents live about an hour away from campus. They needed the option to “check in”.

I got out of the shower, toweled off, and headed back to my room to get dressed. Hmm, I need something cute… I settled on a white Issues shirt, cutoff shorts, and my black and white Converse. I toweled off my hair before brushing it briefly and doing some light makeup. Finally I was ready. I grabbed a notebook and a pen from my desk and walked out of my room.

I’ve really got to unpack when I get home…

I shrugged off the thought as I maneuvered around boxes and out the door.

It was a pretty short drive to campus, about ten minutes without the traffic of other students. Too bad I wouldn’t be able to experience the lack of traffic today. Add in the fact that I was driving through Dallas and I was screwed.

After about twenty minutes of following traffic and searching desperately for a place to park I finally made it into my first class: musicianship. I’d heard that this class was a mixture of interesting and boring so I guess I’d have to find out. I scanned the lecture hall for a place to sit. This hall was huge, almost as big as the small Starbucks down the road. Kids were already sparking up really weird conversations with each other about their “summers of sin”. I rolled my eyes as I passed one guy who was telling his friends about all the girls he fucked.

About halfway down the room I spotted an open seat in between a peppy girl and some dude with a hood over his head. I scooted my way over to the seat and sat down. Neither one of the two people I was sitting between paid any attention to me, which was fine. It was only the first day and they both seemed kind of annoying in their own right. Dude was sitting there with his head on the table, probably asleep, and the peppy one was chatting away about cheer practice today.

“Alright everyone, settle down.” The room got moderately quieter as the professor walked in. “My name is Dr. Horne and I will be your instructor in this course. My office hours are few but they’re there if you need them. I’ll write them on the board.”

I took the moment to look around the room. There were so many people in this one class! I couldn’t help but think that I made the right decision to move in to an apartment.

The hour droned on for what felt like forever. Occasionally I would look over at sleeping beauty to the right of me to see if he had woken up but he hadn’t. Finally, at 8:50, Dr. Horne dismissed us; that was when dude finally woke up. Typical.

I walked out of class and to my car, my stomach rumbling the whole way. Shit, I knew I forgot something. Luckily there was a cute little deli up the road. I quickly started my car and hoped that it wouldn’t be crowded by the time I got there.

Thank God, I thought as I looked around the practically empty room. I walked up to the counter and ordered a sandwich, a fruit cup, and an iced tea. After I got my food I decided to stick around and people watch. I had a little time to kill before my next class so why not. Putting my headphones in I scanned the room. It was a pretty quiet place, kind of homey.

I must’ve sat there for a while because the next thing I knew it was almost 10. SHIT! I quickly got up and ran back to my car. I didn’t want to be late for my next class.

I walked in the hall a few minutes late but somehow happened to avoid the professor calling me out. I sat next to a familiar figure and sighed. Dude from my 8 AM was also in my social psych class. Great. He must’ve picked up on my mood because he smirked.

“What?” I whispered.

“Nothing,” he answered, “it’s just that you’re kinda cute with that attitude.”

“You don’t even know me; I could be a sociopath and have an attitude because I haven’t harmed anyone in the last few hours.” Surprisingly he didn’t look taken back by that at all.

“That’s cute. I knew I’d like you.”

“Oh yeah? And how’d you know that?”

“Because,” he said with a smirk, “you seemed chill at 8 in the morning and that’s hard to do.”

I twirled a lock of hair on my finger before answering back. “So you were awake? Didn’t expect that.”

“Well when a chick bumps into your chair when you’re trying to sleep and then some professor talks for 50 minutes straight it’s kinda hard to stay asleep.” I tried desperately to hide the smirk on my face. “I’m Mike by the way. Mike Fuentes.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“Excuse me, you two,” the professor said pointing up at me and Mike, “can one of you tell me when my office hours are on Tuesdays?”

“Uhhhhhh…….”

“3-4:30,” I answered. The professor scrunched up her face and continued going over the syllabus.

“How’d you know that?” Mike whispered to me.

“My mom is great at multitasking and I guess I got it from her.”

“Well shit.”

The rest of the lecture went by slowly but Mike kept me interested with stimulating conversation about absolutely nothing. “Hey,” he said once class was dismissed, “you never told me what your name is.”

“I didn’t think I had to.”

“C’mon, don’t leave me hanging.”

“Fine,” I said with a dramatic eye roll. “My name’s Kaylee, Kaylee Ramirez.”

“Ramirez? Like, you’re Mexican?” I rolled my eyes again. “Sorry but you don’t look it.” He wasn’t wrong. My blonde hair, green eyes, and pale skin didn’t really say “Hispanic”.

“Well I am so-”

“Hey, I’m sorry. Don’t hate me.”

“Whatever.” I walked away kind of peeved but I got it. Still, rude.

The rest of the day floated by pretty quickly. By 3 I was done with my classes and on my way back to my car to go home.

“Hey Kaylee, wait up!” I turned around to see Mike running toward me.

“What?” I asked with a bit more attitude than I expected. He deserved it though.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry about this morning and, I don’t know, wanted to know if there were a way for me to make up for it.”

“Like how?” He leaned against a car with a smirk.

“Maybe we could have some fun.” I looked him over and melted a little. As much as I wanted to make the right choice I didn’t really want to. He was cute, even with the piercing and tattoos. His tall figure loomed over me with his piercing brown eyes staring into mine. I was getting nervous and a little turned on.

“How ‘bout it? Wanna have some fun with me?”
