Walk with the Dead

Circles

"The name is Ben." Ben said extending his blood covered hand towards Vic, a toothy grin covering his face completely. Vic looked down at Ben's hand and shook his head. "Or not then."

Suddenly walkers began flooding into the alleyway and were gaining on us. "We need to go." Tony said urgently. I looked at Vic and then Ben, there was something odd about them. Vic seemed like he was jealous and Ben seemed like he wasn't sure why Vic would be jealous.

I pushed passed Vic, Tony and Ben and quickly headed towards the fire escape. "I lived on the top floor and would sometimes use the fire escape to get in when I left my keys in the house." I said off the top of my head. It was as if I knew that information my whole life, but it only just came to me.

"Okay let's go." Vic said following me. The other two followed suit though, keeping as close as they could.

I jumped up and grabbed onto the ladder, luckily though my grip on it pulled it down. A small sense of deja vu hit me. "Hurry." Ben commanded. I frantically climbed up the ladder. Vic followed me, then Ben and lastly Tony with a walker hot on his tail. Once we were all on the ledge, I pulled the ladder back up and hooked it onto the top of the frame. "That was close." Tony mumbled and wiped a bead of sweat that was about to roll down his face. I looked at Vic and he still seemed pissed off.

However, I didn't have time for petty arguments or moods. So I began my journey up the stairs to the top floor of the building. At around halfway though, we all had to take a break since it was about 60 flights of stairs. "Why couldn't it have been the 5th floor?" Tony huffed, breathing in deeply.

"Cause I'm dumb." I shrugged. Strangely, my body was used to the flights of stairs since I clearly went up them all the time.

"Well next time pick a lower floor." Tony groaned, finally catching his breath.

It was an odd concept. Next time? Is there even going to be a next time? I'm never going to own a house or apartment ever again though am I? There isn't going to be a civilised human race again. It's like God hit the reset button on humanity. It's a modern day Noah's Ark. At the end of the storm, whoever is standing will pave the way for a new form of humanity without IPhones, computers and brain dead TV. We were brainwashed into believing that our society worked and this has proven that it does not. It never will.

I think the weirdest thing of it all is how going back to the basic survival instincts has shown how many people were so weak. The ones who went in the first few weeks were the real losers of the planet. They made rookie mistakes and relied on their good human nature. I probably would have been one of those people if I hadn't of gotten myself into a coma and found Vic.

"We don't get a next time." Vic spoke up. "This is kinda it."

"Wait, you don't actually think that do you?" Ben asked and raised an eyebrow.

"Well, yeah. There's no hope for humanity now. We don't know what caused this all and we definitely don't know how to stop it. We will all become one of them sooner or later. Let's just accept that shit now." Vic ranted on, putting us in such a downer of a mood.

"God has a plan for us." Tony frowned.

"Oh come on, you don't believe in that shit now Tony do you? I thought that whole end of the world shit would prove that God isn't real." Vic snapped at Tony. I scowled at Vic but he didn't even look my way.

"Look mate, I know you're upset but people can believe what they want to believe to keep themselves sane. He's perfectly in his right to." Ben but in.

Vic thought for a second and then looked at me, catching my death glare. His face softened. "I'm sorry but everyone who believes in that horse shit now, becomes one of them so much faster than they should have." He said pointing down at the walkers below us.

"And it's not your place to crush his morals. Maybe we all change because of this Vic, maybe we lose ourselves but our morals are what keep us who we really are. You don't get to take that away from ANYONE." I spat at him. I got up and began climbing the stairs again, Tony followed me and then Ben. I took a glance back to see Vic's reaction but he hung his head and just followed us up the stairs.

"Thanks." Tony mumbled to me as we walked up the stairs. I looked at him and smiled, which made him smile.

"It's gonna be okay, somehow." I patted his shoulder and we continue our horrible journey up the shaky and unsteady metal stairs.

Once we got to the top I found my apartment and saw the window was closed. "We'll need to smash it." Ben pointed out. I looked at him and nodded. "Plus if there's any walkers in there it'll attract them into this room and we can deal with them much easier than if they surprise us."

"Good point." Tony nodded.

Vic walked up the window first and with the back of his knife struck the window with a ton of force. The window shattered into a million pieces and Vic looked completely unfazed by it. "There we go." He smirked at me.

We waited a few minutes and no biters appeared. "I think we are safe to go in." Tony nodded. Vic climbed in first, I followed him and then Tony and Ben were last.

I looked around my room but no memories flooded back to me. Vic, Tony and Ben walked out of my room and into the hallway. I noticed on my dresser there was an IPhone sitting, so I picked it up and somehow there was still charge in it. I guess I left it fully charged and it stayed in it. I went to my contacts and found a lot of names. Including my husband. I then clicked out of the contacts and to my photographs. There was roughly 800 pictures of random shit.

As I scrolled through the pictures I noticed one which pretty much stopped my heart completely. I opened it and stared down at the screen. It was a picture of me and... Vic. I looked at the date. September 9th 2015. Then I began scrolling through some more pictures and found more and more pictures of me and Vic, some looked friendly but others looked romantic.

The last one I found was the hardest to look at. We were at a party and I was sitting on his lap, his arms around my waist but I was turning to face him. We were staring into each other's eyes, but the way we were looking at each other made my stomach jump around. It looked as though we were madly in love.

I scrolled to the side again and found some pictures of another guy, one I assume to be my husband. We didn't look as happy, we didn't look right together. It pained me to think that. But it was true.

Suddenly my phone switched off and that told me the battery was dead. "Did you find what you were looking for?" A voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked up and found Vic standing at the doorway, a strange look upon his face.

"Yeah, I think so." I mumbled. Well this changes a lot.
