Walk with the Dead

Waking Up

I don't remember much from before the accident. It's kinda blurry in my head, something that confuses me. Who am I? And more importantly where am I? Okay the second question I do know the answer to. I'm currently in a hospital in San Diego. I woke up here about an hour ago but something is kinda odd. There's no one around. The building is quiet and eerie. I'm too scared to go anywhere or to do anything but I can't stay here forever.

So I picked myself up off of the hospital bed and noticed there were some clothes of mine in a chair beside my bed. Jeans and a simple sweater, good enough for me. I quickly put the clothes on and looked around the room.

Nothing stood out as odd to me other than the fact there were flowers next to my bed but they were withered and dead, exactly how I felt right now. There was a card beside the vase of dead flowers. I picked it up and looked closely at the picture. 'Get well soon.' I opened the card and inside there was a small message. 'Dear Alice, I hope you get better soon and we can continue on with our lives, I love you. From your husband,Damien.' A small pang of hurt burst through my veins. I don't remember anyone. I couldn't even put a face to the name Damien.

I placed the card down and sighed. My eyes glanced over to the door, something that I hadn't really noticed until now. I walked over to the door and opened it slowly, the stench of rotten flesh and dried blood oozed into the room like a swarm of bees. My hand clamped over my mouth and nose to shield me from such terrible smells.

I stepped out of the room though and into the dim corridor, checking each direction but seeing nothing but destruction in my path. Paper covered the floor, broken up computers scrambled on the ground and pools of blood everywhere. My stomach couldn't handle it. I threw up everything in my system, which wasn't much due to the fact I've been in what I assume to have been a coma for a while now. I looked down at the vomit on the floor and felt nauseated.

A rustle down the hallway brought my attention back to the destruction outside my room.I stepped over the sick and began to walk down the hallway towards the noises. "Hello?" I called out. My voice was hoarse and I choked on every syllable. However, there was no answer to my call.

I heard the noise again but it was louder this time. My attention was drawn to the noise, whatever it was I had to find out. What if it was someone else?

Suddenly a figure came into view and my heart sank a little. "Hi, can you tell me what's going on?" I asked, taking some steps towards the figure. Again there was no answer, which confused me. The figure came into some light and it was a nurse, maybe around my age. Her face was pale white like she was dead and her left cheek was ripped down to the bottom of her jaw, exposing her cheek bone. I let out a small gasp. She didn't seem hurt or bothered by the fact half of her face was hanging off.

She began to walk towards me, letting out a small grunt as she did so. As she gained speed it became clear to me that she wasn't okay at all, people don't move like that in the state she was in. When she was about 3 feet away from me she reached out her arms and tried to grab me but I dodged out of the way and she collided with the wall and then fell to the floor. She swiped her hands at my feet but I stumbled back wards and watched her rise to her feet again.
This was the first time that I properly got to see her eyes and to my despair, she was dead behind them. There was no sign of life within her at all. It was as though her body was still functioning but her mind and soul were gone. I felt a lump rise in my throat and turned on my heel. I ran as fast as I could out of the corridor but it just led me to some stairs. The smart person in me said to go down stairs but my stupid legs led me up the stairs.

I burst out of the stairwell into a hallway that was long but there was no destruction to the corridor at all. But there was also no sign of life. I began to walk down the corridor though, looking for something to give me an idea of what happened here but there was nothing. Nothing at all to indicate what the fuck was going on in this place.

Maybe I was hit on the head so hard and this is all just a figment of my imagination. I pinched myself on the arm to confirm. "Ouch!" I groaned. Nope,I'm definitely awake.

Something caught my eye though, a room with a window. I don't know what exactly made me want to look inside the room but I just did. So I walked over to the window and to my surprise there was a guy lying on the bed in the room. He had caramel coloured skin, longish brown hair and was clad in normal clothing; unlike me when I woke up in a fucking gown.

I slowly reached for the doorknob and opened it. There was a creak from the door, which led me to think that it hadn't been used in a while. However though,I walked into the room and over to the person lying in the bed. A sudden realisation hit me, what if this guy is the same as that nurse from downstairs?

My instincts kicked in and I looked around the room. My eyes landed on a metal pole lying on the ground near my feet so I picked it up and gripped it tightly in my hands. I paced myself as I walked over to the bed, making sure I had enough space to run out of the room if it all went to shit.

The guy on the bed was breathing heavily though, something I don't think the nurse from earlier was doing. I got as close as I could to the guy and inspected him. He had a red line across his forehead, obviously from an in jury but the stitches were ripped out. That much was evident to me.

I took in his peaceful posture, he looked so happy. Suddenly his eyes opened and he stared up at me, blinking a few times. I jumped back and didn't let him out of my gaze at all. I inspected his eyes though and they were very much alive. His forehead scrunched up. "Who are you?" He croaked out. I looked at my hands and then remembered the card. My name is Alice.
"Alice is my name."I told him. "That's all I know."

He rubbed his eyes and sat up on the bed. "I'm Vic but I mean why are you in my room?"He asked a little more obnoxiously than I think he meant to sound.

I looked around and realised that this floor had no evidence of what had happened at all,so explaining to this stranger about the fact no one is here and I'm pretty sure that the nurse downstairs is dead, will be a challenge."I don't know what's going on here." I began.

"Can you get a nurse to explain to me then?" He said as he rubbed his forehead where the scar was, I wanted to tell him that he probably shouldn't play with the scar as it didn't look 100% healed yet.

"There's a nurse downstairs but she kinda tried to attack me so I wouldn't speak to her." I told him with a sarcastic laugh. He looked up at me as if I had just majorly offended him and his whole family.

"Funny, why are you in my room?" He squinted his eyes at me, taking in my posture and looks.
"Something strange is going on and you're the only person that I've been able to find in the past hour or so since I woke up from coma." I explained to him.His eyes widened, he was curious about what I was saying.

"What do you mean by strange?" He asked.

I walked over to the window and looked out. The sight before me made my head spin in circles. It once again, felt like a dream.

Bodies were ripped and strewed across the parking lot. Cars were abandoned and some were burnt up, others were smashed to pieces. There were people walking around aimlessly and then there were some eating other people. I closed my eyes and held back the nauseous feeling once again. "Have a look for yourself." I mumbled with my eyes closed tight.

I heard Vic get up off the bed and slowly walk over to the window next to me. My eyes opened and they studied his reaction. "Shit." He whispered as he watched the terror outside. "We need to find help... What is wrong with these people?" Vic asked frantically. I looked back outside and shook my head violently.

"If we go out there then we might get hurt." It was as though I was pleading with him.

"These people have some sort of rabies, whatever it is we can just keep away from them.If we get past them then we will be fine." His voice was calming, something that I very much needed at the moment. "This is probably just something within the town. A small outbreak of really bad rabies and we just got forgotten about when being evacuated. It'll be fine.

I looked at him with uncertain eyes, how could I trust this guy whom I've never met before in my life? On the other hand though if I don't trust him then I might end up dead or seriously hurt. "Okay, I trust you." I replied.

A smile crept on his face and he looked down to the metal pole in my hand. "I'll need to find something too." He said eyeing the pole up. "Just in case."His eyes travelled up to meet mine, giving me a reassuring smile as he did so.

We both left his room and began to search for a weapon for Vic. Luckily though, within about three minutes we found a baseball bat. Why someone had this in a hospital I'll never know but hey, it's came in handy now.

"There's an exit down the back of this ward and it leads to a stairwell outside instead of us having to travel through the building." Vic informed me as he began walking towards the end of the corridor. "We should be fine if we go this way." He said as he glanced back to see if I was okay.

I nodded and we both looked forward when a person came into view again at the end of the corridor. We both stopped dead in our tracks. The person was wearing surgery scrubs and had blood all over themselves. It was a guy, he didn't say a word so it's safe to assume he was one of them. "Vic,that's one of them." I whispered as quietly as I possibly could.

Vic tensed up beside me, which made me begin to sweat a little. There was no way out of this without someone getting hurt. The doctor began limping towards us, one of his ankles appeared to be broken.

He got closer and closer until he was in arms reach to us and that's when Vic struck him over the head with his baseball bat. The guy stumbled to the ground, blood began to pour from his head but despite that he wasn't dead, in fact the blow to the head didn't phase him at all. He scrambled towards my feet and grabbed onto my ankles and pulled me down onto the ground.
I fell onto my back and as I tried to kick myself away from the guy he tried to bite my leg,but he didn't. Vic stepped in and began hitting the guy over the head, repeatedly with the baseball bat until his skull caved in.

Blood splattered everywhere and I just watched in awe as Vic hit the guy.
Once he stopped, Vic dropped the baseball bat to the ground and then dropped to his knees staring at the body in front of us. "I just killed a man." He mumbled. I looked at him with disbelief. Was it murder if it was self defence?

The guy's hand was still on my leg and I pushed it off quickly. His freezing cold skin made my stomach churn. It was at that moment that I realised something important. "Vic..." I said quietly but loud enough to gain his attention. "He was already dead." It confirmed what I thought about the nurse downstairs. It confirmed that right now, something messed up was happening to the world around me. This wasn't just a San Diego thing. This was a worldwide thing.
And right now, we could be the only people still alive.

Vic pushed his hair out of his face and wiped the blood from his face and onto the sleeve of his jumper. "We need to get out of here now, there is no messing around any more." He said as he rose to his feet. He held his handout for me to take and pull me up. I stared at it and realised that this was my future now. I don't know a thing about my past but I didn't have a choice about my future. Life is kinda funny like that I guess.

I took his hand and he helped me up. I picked up my metal pole and he mirrored my actions when picking up his baseball bat. "Let's go." I nodded at him.

Notes

Okay, so this is a whole new story I've started. I did a zombie one a while ago but it sucked and I hated it. So, here it is. A band version of The Walking Dead. Kinda. Well it's nothing like TWD bar the zombies. Let me know what you thought of this opening chapter though?
