Broken Connection

Revenge Tastes Sweet

Maya: Any updates on your evil plan?
Naira: Vic should be here soon
Naira: All I have to do is wait and then hit him with it
Maya: It might be intimidating, but I love this side of you
Naira: So do I!

Naira’s POV

It might seem sadistic, but I was so excited for my whole plan to commence. Although it was very hard to keep from him, Vic didn’t know a thing about my dad coming here. I never even said anything about my dad looking at plane tickets. It had all been a secret, and there was a reason why. I got the message from my dad literally the day that Vic planned a surprise visit to his parents and I had full intentions of telling him. But then he decided to be a dick, so I kept it to myself and decided to get him back. I literally thought of it on the spot when we were having our argument, so I was quite proud of myself.

My dad also didn’t know that I was doing this. All I told him was that Vic was coming over a little later because he was busy. It was quite an evil thing to do, but I couldn’t help myself. If Vic was going to fuck with me, I was going to fuck with him. Easy as that. It wasn’t even harmful, so getting my dad involved didn’t put anybody in danger. The worst thing that could happen was Vic showing up completely naked, but that didn’t seem very realistic. I was just going to give him a little scare.

“So, when is this boyfriend of yours coming?” My dad asked from his spot on the couch. We were both wearing pajamas and watching some of my old favorite shitty movies he had decided to bring along. I decided it was best to not tell him about events that had happened on the couch before and focused more on the fact that we were having a good old-fashioned movie night.

I checked my phone to see if I had gotten any new messages but was only met with it being ten minutes since he last sent me anything. “Any moment soon.”

As if on cue, the buzzer rang telling me that somebody was at the door on the ground floor. Without checking who it was or saying anything, I pressed the small white button with a key on it that unlocked the door. I already knew that it had to be Vic and didn’t want to risk blurting out my surprise before he even got here. He needed to feel exactly how I felt. It was time for payback. This time it just happened to be a lot less painful than what Maya and I had done to Jaime, and less embarrassing than what I had done to Mike. Before I knew it, if I didn’t watch out, it was going to be something I was going to do on a near daily basis.

I unlocked my front door already and opened it ajar so that Vic could come in as soon as he had gone up all the floors. Sometimes the elevator only took a short while, but sometimes it could take minutes before you got to your destination. It really depended on how many other people wanted to get on and the algorithm it used wasn’t the best. Sometimes it would go back down to the lobby even if you were very close to the floor you wanted to be on. At least it worked and I hadn’t gotten stuck in it yet, so that was something.

After a little while of waiting at the door, Vic finally appeared, opening the door himself. He was also wearing pajamas; just like I had asked him to. Although this wasn’t as awkward as what I was wearing when I met his parents, I still needed to do something to get him back for that specific part. It would have been way funnier if my dad and I had been wearing normal clothes, but it was movie night, so it wouldn’t have made much sense.

He smiled brightly at me and kissed me as if we hadn’t seen each other in ages. His hand was on my back, pushing my body close to him. If it were up to him, we wouldn’t have broken contact in a very long time and things would have escalated quickly, but I couldn’t let that happen when all my dad had to do to see us was stretch out and lean towards the other side of the couch. I wasn’t going to be that evil and embarrass Vic completely while also making it bad for me.

I carefully pushed on his chest to break us apart. He hesitantly took his lips off mine, getting my hint. Now I just had to figure out how I wanted to break the surprise to him. It wasn’t something I had thought of before, assuming that it would have just happened almost immediately. Luckily, I was still able to make a very natural transition. Vic was holding a small crate of beer that held six bottles. A perfect way to start it all.

“Hey, dad, Vic brought beer!” I announced while taking the beer, walking back into the living room, expecting Vic to close the door behind him. “Movie night is now complete.”

At first, Vic seemed confused, maybe thinking I was FaceTiming or Skyping him and had been talking to him before and hadn’t hung up yet. But then my dad actually answered, and his voice wasn’t coming through crappy speakers. “I like this guy already!”

I briefly looked back at Vic again to check his reaction and a smile started playing at my lips. His hand was still on the door handle after having pulled the door shut, his body had stiffened up and his eyes had doubled in size, looking at me for an answer. I wasn’t going to give him what he wanted, though. He was going to have to get through this all by himself, just like he had forced me to do before.

I easily put down the beer on the coffee table and skipped to the kitchen to grab a bottle opener. There was no point in getting glasses, because it was a tradition to drink it right out of the bottle. It might not have been a very special tradition, because many people drank it that way, but it just felt weird to do it any other way. Even when I was underage, I would get soda or something of the like in a bottle.

I made sure to take my time so that Vic could walk into the room as well, but as I got back he still wasn’t there. He wouldn’t have sneaked away, right? If he had, I would have something to use against him forever. It would have been so funny.

“What’s taking you so long?” I asked as I put the bottle opener next to the cardboard crate, falling back on the couch right next to my dad.

“Just taking off my shoes,” Vic mumbled, his head popping around the corner just seconds after. He glanced at both me and my dad before emerging fully. He just stood there a couple of feet away from us as if he were being inspected by a jury.

“You never take off your shoes!” I called him out despite seeing him barefoot right in front of me. To me, it was obvious that he had only quickly slipped off his Vans right after telling me he was.

“Usually, no. But I’m in my pajamas. Who in the world wears shoes and pajamas?” He made up as an excuse, not sure whether he had to introduce himself or not. If I had given him a warning beforehand, he probably would have come prepared and would have known everything he wanted to say. But now he had to improvise, and the pressure was on.

“You do,” I retorted with a smirk, trying to make it even more difficult on him.

He shook his head, glaring at me since he knew exactly what I was doing. “No, I don’t. Name one time I have!”

He was just making himself an easy target. Somehow everything he did or said just helped me out rather than him. I took the challenge and started recalling an event. “That one time Maya caught us doing something when I still lived with her and she kicked you out because she wanted to rant to me about something.”

“I have a feeling I do not want to know about this story,” my dad interrupted before I could go into anymore detail and make it so much more awkward for all parties in this room.

“It’s not that sexual, actually,” I replied, not letting Vic off the hook so easily. “I mean, I used to tell you every single gory detail, we can totally start that up again.”

“I’m just trying to spare him!” My dad laughed at me, motioning to Vic with one of his hands. Not only did that comment make Vic relax a tiny minuscule bit, but it also told me he wasn’t completely against me telling him more stuff about my life; stuff best friends normally talked about.

“Oh, right,” I chirped, pulling up my legs so I could sit cross-legged. “Dad, this is Vic. Vic, this is my dad.”

After giving me a short unamused glance, Vic put on a perfect smile for my dad. “Nice to meet you…” He waited for my dad to say what to call him.

“George.” My dad reached out to shake his hand and reciprocated the smile. “I would offer you a beer, but this is your beer, so I won’t do that.”

“Well, I brought it here to drink, right?” Vic chuckled and sat down on the opposite end of the couch, where there still was some space.

“There’s a simple solution to this,” I said as I reached out for the first bottle that was still cool and opened it. I gave it to my dad and opened the second one to give to Vic.

There was silence when we all had one and I could feel Vic staring at me. Since he wasn’t able to prepare any conversation starters, he was now fully relying on me to make sure we kept talking the entire time. But I wasn’t going to give him that pleasure. Either he was going to have to take some initiative, or it was just going to be quiet for the remainder of the time. I didn’t know how long this whole thing was going to take. My dad was going to stay in the guestroom and I know Vic was planning on staying over as well, so it was quite possible this was going to continue until breakfast the next morning.

“So, Vic,” my dad decided to start, wanting to know more about my ‘mysterious’ boyfriend even though I had already told him quite a lot about us, “Naira told me that you guys have quite the age gap.”

Of course, that was the first thing to come up. What else would my dad have asked about? It was obviously going to be talked about.

Vic nearly choked and tried to cover it up by putting on the grin he had been using the entire time already to look like he was really happy to be there. “Yeah, um, I don’t really think much about it… I’m more focused on being with Naira than our age.”

“I understand,” my dad nodded, taking a sip of his drink, “I also don’t really think about being 42 on a daily basis.”

I could see Vic doing the math in his head, working out the thing I had freaked about some time before. He also realized that the age difference between him and my dad was smaller than the age difference between us. If he didn’t look a little panicked before, he definitely did now.

“I hope you don’t mind our age difference,” Vic said next, wanting the full approval of my father. He just was that kind of guy. I knew that if my dad said he absolutely wouldn’t accept it, Vic would have reconsidered everything. He knew how important family was.

“I had a child at nineteen with a woman who was twenty-six at the time, you tell me if I mind.” My dad deadpanned, no emotion shown in his features.

I had to admit, this was going a little too far. Vic really did seem scared, not sure how to reply. If I had been the one in his situation, I would have probably ran out of the room knowing that I was going to have an attack. This was a whole new level of getting back at him. I didn’t want any harm, and at this rate, harm would be done.

“Stop being such an asshole,” I grumbled, nudging my dad a little. I hadn’t asked him to act like this and wasn’t even expecting it. Honestly, I really did believe that he would have been all fun right from the beginning.

“I’m just saying,” my dad put his hands up in defense, holding his beer bottle by the neck in between his thumb and forefinger, “if he gets you pregnant and disappears, I will hunt him down.”

Vic sighed out in relief. It wasn’t the age gap my dad was warning him about, but the other thing he was afraid of. “I would never do that.” Vic shook his head, rejecting that he was capable of doing anything of the like. “I would stay with her through it all.”

My dad nodded, acting as if he was considering something, and leaned back a little. “Well, ok then. Now that’s all clear up, I can tell you all these embarrassing stories about Naira!”

“Oh, no, you’re not,” I threatened, ready to pounce and cover his mouth if he even thought about starting a story.

“Oh, yes, I am,” he retorted with an evil smirk. “I even brought along an amazing photo album just for this occasion! I have to act like a typical annoying dad or else I wouldn’t be playing my part.”

He stood up, putting his drink back down on the coffee table. As he started walking in the direction of the bedroom, I leaped after him and grabbed him by the leg. He continued to move while I wrapped my entire body around his left leg, hoping my weight wouldn’t let him walk further and my grip would make sure he couldn’t get me off. But he barely needed to use more power to move forward. My small body didn’t compete against his bigger one.

“No,” I whined, grabbing onto him tighter as if that was going to make a difference.

“You’ve been doing this since you could walk, I’ve been trained.” He laughed and shook my off.

While he disappeared, I was on the floor and pouted at Vic. Together, the both of them, they would be able to make my life a living hell. Hopefully, their love for me was strong enough to stop them from doing so. Well, I didn’t know if Vic loved me… maybe he loved me, but wasn't in love with me. Who knew?

“I don’t feel any sympathy for you.” Vic shook his head, refusing to help me up as I tried to reach out for him. “You brought this on yourself.”

“Fine.” I continued to pout and pushed myself up. I slouched back over to the couch and let myself fall right beside him.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and kissed the top of my head. “You know what makes this whole situation even more awkward for me? I’m not even wearing any underwear. One wrong move, and everything will be out in the open for everyone to see.”

“What the hell?” I giggled, looking up at him to see if he was actually being serious. “Why would you do that!”

“Don’t put this all on me. You’re the one who invited me to ‘watch movies’ in ‘our pajamas’. It sounded a lot like code words to me.” He defended himself, laying all the blame on me.

“Oh my god, no!” I covered my face with the palms of my hands, suffering from secondhand embarrassment.

“Hey, I’m the one who has to go through the entire evening like this!”

“Ok, ok, fine. Go check my closet, you’ve left stuff behind, which actually worries me a little because it means that you’ve walked out of here like this before.”

“Let’s not talk about that…” He peeled my hands off my face and quickly kissed me before going in the same direction as my dad had done just a short while before.

I was all by myself until my dad came back. He looked around the room confused, but I covered for Vic by saying that he went to the bathroom. I had gotten him back enough, I didn’t need to make it any worse on him than it already had been. Plus, I actually did want Vic and my dad to get to know each other. If I made sure things would stay awkward, that would never happen. I had wanted them to meet for quite some time, I wasn’t going to ruin that.

My dad opened the photo album to the first page and smiled at the sole photograph. “This is probably one of my favorite photos we have together.”

I looked over his shoulder to get a peek and saw a photograph that my grandma had taken a couple of days after my dad had gotten me. He was passed out on the couch at my grandma’s house, shirtless and not showing any signs of waking up soon. However, he wasn’t passed out for the same reasons why most nineteen years old did. I was fast asleep on his chest, still tiny since I was only a couple of days old. We both looked very peaceful despite that our lives were going to change forever. Well, I was a baby so of course I didn’t notice, and my dad was freaking out whenever he was awake. But right at that moment, it was just a guy with his newborn daughter. Nothing more, nothing less.
