Broken Connection

Strange Surprises

Vic: Naira, you up yet?
Vic: Naira?
Vic: Hellooooo?
Vic: Naira, baby, babe, honey, darling
Vic: Am I actually awake before you for once?
Vic: I’m coming over whether you’re awake or not

Naira’s POV
I woke to the unused side of the bed dipping down behind me, causing me to nearly roll over. After a long and late night full of grading, I deserved to have a peaceful slumber, but I did not know how lengthy that slumber had actually gotten. I was so dazed from my sleep that it didn’t even occur to me that somebody had to be in my bedroom for my bed to be moving from any other cause that myself. But when Vic’s hair tickled my cheeks and his lips were touching mine, I couldn’t help but kiss back. It was something I did automatically and couldn’t stop.

My body was facing the opposite direction to the one my head was turned towards, causing my neck to be bent at a weird angle. So, I let myself move onto my back and wrapped my arms around my boyfriend’s neck to pull him closer. While he did kiss me back for a while, he eventually pulled away from me, but not for the reason I wanted him to. Normally now would be the time that he would take off his shirt, or mine, or both, but he just completely stopped. I whined and made grabby hands to try and get him back. However, he just shook his head while still smiling sweetly.

“I actually came here for a reason,” he told me while running his fingers through my hair, “nothing bad, I just wanted to take you out.”

“Ok,” I mumbled, even though I didn’t have any intentions of letting him get away so easily. I sat up slowly and snaked my arms around his neck again. “But, I was up very late grading tests, and it was pretty stressful, so I’m not sure if I’m up for it.”

I pressed our lips together again into a sweet heated kiss. Vic moved his lips with mine, making me think he decided to go along with my spontaneous plans. But I was far off. Just as I wanted to climb into his lap, he broke away from me again even though his hands were on my waist.

“I’m being serious,” he said with swollen lips, making me want to giggle, “if we don’t leave now, we’ll be late.”

“Late to what?” I questioned, surprised he actually made plans for us to go somewhere without telling me first. I wouldn’t have stayed up so late to grade if I knew I had to get up for something in the morning.

“I wanted to get breakfast with you, but most places stop selling breakfast after 11 pm, and it’s nine right now, so…”

Ok, so he technically hadn’t made concrete plans, but breakfast did sound good, especially since it meant I didn’t have to simply eat off-brand cereal with the tiny bit of milk I had left in the fridge. Yet I still groaned, “but I don’t feel like changing.”

“So don’t,” he laughed with the most heartwarming smile, “I’m also in something I’d normally only wear at home.”

“Fine, but I’m still changing into something just a bit more presentable than pajamas.”

So, that’s exactly what I did. It wasn’t much better than just showing up somewhere in my pajamas, but it at least showed I cared enough to make a little bit of an effort. I mean, technically I couldn’t be bothered to wear one of my sweaters, but nobody really knew that. At least Vic didn’t look all dressed up, or I would have felt terrible.

When we stepped into the elevator, it was quarter to ten, meaning we still had some time to get to whatever restaurant or cafe Vic wanted to go to. Luckily, the elevator didn’t make too many stops at too many floors, and traffic wasn’t against us. We went to this place Vic deemed ‘way too good for words’. It was in downtown San Diego, a place where I didn’t come all too often. My job, apartment, and friends all were in the suburbs, so why would I ever need to go into the city? It wasn’t like I actually had the money to go out frequently.

I had serious trouble trying to choose what to eat. Everything sounded so good and tasty. It was all homemade, making my choice even harder. The place we went to wasn’t anything like Starbucks or whatever other coffeeshop you could think off, but it was a small family owned business. So, I couldn’t just choose something from the amazing meals they offered. Everything made my mouth water. However, Vic decided to take matters into his own hands and ordered two dishes for us to share (emphasis on share. He couldn’t get mad at me for eating his food, because he was the one that came up with the idea). One plate had two large pieces of French Toast, while the other had a large waffle with blueberries. Let me tell you, it had been the best breakfast I had had in awhile. Even though I was annoyed at first because Vic decided to wake me up from my deep slumber, I was actually happy he took me out for this. It was an easy way to fit another date into our busy schedules and we got amazing food out of it.

Some people say that the way to a girl’s heart is through smooth words and romantic gestures. While I did appreciate those things, the real way to my heart was through good food. Anybody could swoon me just by knowing where the good restaurants were and make me taste the food. I didn’t care if it was some fast food joint or a little cafe in a sketchy-looking alleyway. Vic just happened to have picked this up and use it to his advantage.

While this date might seem like an important event, it was probably one of the least important things that happened that day. It was far, far from it.

So, let me tell you about what could possibly be bigger than Vic’s attempt at impressing me. First of all, it basically reversed all of the effects of the amazing date. Second of all, I will always resent him a little for what he did. It was so not cool.

We were in the car, driving back home, wherever that may have been (either my place or Vic’s), or so I thought. On a road we’d usually go to the right to go into the suburbs, we suddenly went to the left instead. At first I just thought Vic might have decided to take a different route due to traffic or just because he felt like it. But he never took a turn that would take us back to the direction we needed to go. We were just going further and further into the opposite direction, into a part of town I’d never been before.

“Um, Vic, where exactly are we going?” I chuckled nervously, wondering where the hell he was taking me. I had never agreed to extending this date further than just breakfast. It wasn’t that I would have declined, but it would have been nice to get a heads up.

“My parents asked me to come over for a bit.” Was what he answered in a casual tone. It was like he hadn’t even realized what exactly he was doing. He acted like he was telling me he just had to drive past the post office so he could mail a letter. Well, it was nothing like that.

“Are you fucking kidding me!” I shrieked, causing him to swerve a bit to the left in shock before recovering quickly.

He took in a sharp breath after just being able to avoid a life-or-death situation. “You scared me. I’m just going to politely ask you to never scream again when I’m driving.”

“I’m just going to politely ask you to never hit me with something like this ever in your lifetime.” I mocked, not going to drop this as easily as he wanted me to.

“Hit you with what?”

“Really? You’re just going to act like it’s no big deal?” I said in a nonchalant voice, resisting the urge to roll my eyes at him. “You can’t just suddenly tell me that I’m going to meet your parents literal minutes before it happens.”

“I thought you wanted to meet them.” He frowned, not taking his eyes off the road.

“Yeah, we talked about it. But that means we first have to discuss when we are going to do so and then plan it. You missed a couple of steps. You can’t just go from a hypothetical situation to making it reality! It doesn’t work that way. It’s like imagining a world apocalypse and then suddenly creating zombies to take over the world and give everybody a horrible surprise!”

“Oh, come on, it’s not that bad.”

I stayed silent for a couple of seconds, just staring at him, before giving him a monotone reply. “I am not meeting your parents.”

“What?”

“I am not meeting your parents,” I repeated, “I refuse to. I don’t care what you do. You can go in and I’ll wait in the car, I’ll call a cab to take me home, hell, I’ll wait on the sidewalk. I’m just not meeting your parents.”

“Well, we’re already here, so you don’t have much of a choice.” Vic slowed down the car until it came to a halt at the side of the road in front of a row of small houses. This neighborhood was quite different to the one we lived in.

I shook my head as I took my seatbelt off and opened the door on my side. “That’s where you’re wrong, Buddy. I have my own free will, it’s not the 18th century.”

And, so, I got out and slammed the door shut behind me before walking into a random direction, which happened to be the one we had came from. It just made most sense to me to retrace the route we had taken so I could find my way to a familiar place. Seemed quite simple to me.

“Hold on! Where do you think you’re going?” Vic rushed out of the car and ran up to me.

I shrugged and pulled out my phone to find out where exactly I actually was. “Finding my way home.”

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you…” He looked around the place as if scoping the area.

“I’ll be fine.” I waved him off and went back to letting the map on my phone find my location.

“Yeah, I don’t think so,” he tried turning me around, “a beautiful girl all alone on streets like this does not lead to anything good.”

I gave him the most unamused look I could muster. Of course I knew it was stupid to go wandering around here, I wasn’t that stupid. “Like I said before, I’ll call a cab.”

“Come on, please. It’s not safe out there and my mom has been looking forward to meeting you for so long.”

“You can’t just do this to me.”

“Do what?”

“Drop bombshells on me like that. You fucking know what happens and it’s all your fucking fault.” I stated.

“When you get stressed you start swearing a lot more than usual.” Vic pointed out the obvious, not making his situation any better. It just made me want to turn away even more.

“Like I can fucking control that,” I glared and hit away his hand as he tried to reach out to me. A house down, I saw a small woman with white hair like mine watching us. “You know, if I have an attack in there, you’re going to be the one to fix it all.”

His facial expression softened as he tried to touch my arm again, but moved away before I could slap his hand again. “Is that what this is about?”

“No, this is about you being fucking insane!” I whisper-shouted, not wanted to attract any more attention than we were already getting.

“Just take a deep breath, I promise everything will be ok. Maybe try diverting your energy a little so that you don’t keep swearing as much when we’re inside.” He took hold of my hand and started pulling me, but I wouldn’t budge.

“It’s not about that! And I don’t really appreciate you thinking that a deep breath will make it all go away. Who would have thought that just by simply breathing I would be able to stop my Tourette's attacks? Victor Vincent Fuentes is a genius, everyone!” I ripped my hand out of his grip and made gestures to emphasize my sarcasm. “Would you be ok with me just making you meet my dad out of the blue with no warning beforehand?”

Before Vic could answer, the lady from before called out, “Victor?”

“Just a second, mama!” Vic shouted back and gave me a stern look as if trying to see if his mother having practically witnessed our fight did anything to me. But when he saw that it barely caused a reaction -- I was actually freaking out on the inside -- he answered my question. “Yes, yes I would be ok with it. We discussed it before, so I knew that it was coming. So, now, do what I would do, and come meet my parents.”

Just as I was about to protest again, I got an idea. So, I sighed and reluctantly agreed. “Fine.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, for you.” I smiled a quickly kissed him.

But he didn’t know what was to come next: sweet, sweet revenge.
