Broken Connection

Just a Lazy Annoying Day

Tony: Anyone up to hang out tomorrow?
Maya: Yeah, sure, I’ve got nothing better to do.
Mike: I’ll be there too
Maya: Oh… great.
Jaime: Mind if I show up too? I promise to not cause any drama
Mike: Can we trust you to?
Tony: Mike, get over it already. Of course you can come too, Jaime.
Maya: Let me guess, my living room is going to be used once again…
Mike: Damn right we are. What, hate my presence too much?
Maya: Vic, Naira? What about you guys?
Jaime: Hellooooo, Earth to Vic/Naira. Anybody home?
Tony: Are you ignoring us?
Mike: Stop fucking each other and answer us!
Maya: They just went out… Leave them be.
Mike: But I’ve never seen a couple not use their phone on a date before!

Naira’s POV
The car slowly started slowing down as we pulled into the street Maya’s house was on. At this late hour, the sky was already pitch black, not a cloud in the sky. If anything, the sun was closer to rising than it was to setting. With no moon to illuminate the surroundings, the only light around us were the streetlights and an occasional light on inside the houses. Most people were already asleep, leaving only the noise of a busy city buzzing in the background.

“Remind me why we stayed out until two am again?” I ran a hand through my hair and looked at Vic who had just parked the car on the curb outside of Maya’s house. The car lights turned on, nearly blinding me with it’s brightness.

He took the keys out of the ignition and chuckled at me. “Well, because we went out to dinner, but lost track of time after going out for a drive.”

“But why,” I started whining before a yawn took over, muddling my words together, “but I do have to admit that the views you showed we were pretty great. They’re definitely a place to go when you want to clear your head. I get why you’d go there if you wanted some quick inspiration.”

“I’d only take you to beautiful and meaningful places. But then again, you could make any place look beautiful.” He smirked at me, turning around in his seat so he could see me better.

“You’re such a cheeseball.” I hit his chest lightly, getting lost in his deep brown smiling eyes

He raised up his hands in defence. “You signed up for it!”

“Hey, if I recall correctly, we both went in for that first kiss. It wasn’t just one of us that initiated it. So, don’t go blaming me for you being such a hopeless romantic and so mushy.”

“You have to admit it was a pretty good kiss though,” he pointed at me, grinning confidently.

“I guess,” I shrugged nonchalantly, “I mean, you’ve done a lot better a couple of times already.”

“Hmm, let’s see if I can break that record again.” He brought his hand up to caress my cheek, leaning in while I did so as well.

When our lips finally made contact midway, shocks were sent throughout my body. It could have just been static electricity from us moving around in the seats, but I liked to think it was some sort of spark. Once again he managed to outdo himself. His hand dropped from my face and down my shoulder, dragging down my t-shirt sleeve just a couple of inches, exposing one of my bra straps, which his finger immediately hooked onto.

“Are you going to come inside?” I whispered against his lips.

“Yeah.” He nodded before connecting our lips again.

----

The next morning--well, I should say afternoon, because it was certainly not morning anymore-- I woke up on Vic’s bare chest. When I started stirring, he ran his fingers through a lock of hair that had fallen in my face, pushing it aside for me. I looked up at him, seeing he was wide awake, but still had an arm wrapped tightly around me

“Hi,” he breathed with a smile, stroking my cheek gently to help wake me up.

I groaned and hid my face, cuddling into him further. He might have been used to going to bed pretty late, but I hadn’t gone to bed much later than 12 am for quite some time, and even then I was only up that late because I had some last minute grading to do. Usually, I’d go to bed on time so I wouldn’t be way too tired at work, increasing my chances of an attack. But, hey, I couldn’t complain about last night not being fun.

“I don’t want to get up!” I whined, but my stomach growled loudly, betraying me. “Well, that’s embarrassing.”

“Trust me, it could be worse.” He winked and started to sit up, causing me to roll off his chest
.
I let out an annoyed moan and hugged my pillow closer to my body. “I’m not ready to face the world.”

“You will have to some time,” he got out of bed, quickly kissing my cheek and throwing all the sheets on me, “and since I’m going to take a shower now, I suggested you start preparing for it.”

“Ugh, fine, but I’m too lazy to make myself look like an actual human being. You can try all you want, but your girlfriend will not match up to any standards you have today.”

He laughed as he left my room to go to the bathroom just down the hall. I considered falling asleep again and just not doing anything that was my responsibility today, but I knew better than doing that. If I started procrastinating, everything would just build up and eventually stress me out way too much. So, even though my entire body was protesting, I dragged myself out of bed and towards my closet. I took out a large t-shirt I had and put it on, not caring about putting on a bra or any pants. Today was an oversized shirt and underwear day. I couldn’t be bothered to look anything like the day I did before.

I went downstairs to go make myself some coffee, still hearing the water run in the bathroom, but was surprised to see four people in the living room. Maybe if I had known that Mike, Jaime, and Tony were also here, I would have put on some more clothes. But, to be honest, I didn’t even really care about that. I would have just liked a bit of a heads up.

“She’s awake!” Tony exclaimed, throwing his hands up in triumph, immediately making everybody in the room turn to look at me.

“Shhh,” I put my finger to my lips and squinted, like most people would do when they were hungover, “too tired for any social interaction.”

“What time did you get home anyway?” Maya shrugged off my complaint, wanting more information out of me. “I think even I went to bed before you came back.”

“I think I fell asleep at three thirty, but it might have been later, I wasn’t really keeping track of time.” I turned on the coffee machine, really needing the caffeine to wake me up for a short amount of time until I needed to drink another mug.

“Where’s Vic anyway?” Mike asked, stretching his arm over the back of the couch, his hand nearly draping around Maya. She quickly shuffled away, trying to make it seem less obvious, as if she didn’t realise what Mike was doing.

I sighed as I opened the cupboard and saw all the mugs on the bottom shelf had been used and the only ones that were clean were at the very top. “Either in the shower or just coming out… Easy answer: upstairs, why?”

“Who’s shirt are you wearing?” Maya wiggled her eyebrows, pointing at the army green shirt with the print that had long faded off.

I automatically looked down as what I was wearing and shrugged. “I think I stole this on from my dad in my second year of college. He’s a pretty big dude, while I’m a midget, so it’s really big on me.”

“I don’t think that’s the answer she was looking for. Right, Maya?” Mike nudged the girl sat next to him, with a smirk. She just gave him an awkward smile back, not bothering to tease me any further.

“Anyway, you should stop calling yourself small if you don’t want other people saying that about you,” Tony told me, trying to cover up the awkwardness, as if none of us realised the tension between Mike and Maya.

“I don’t care people calling me small,” I climbed up on the counter to grab to large mugs, “because, let's be honest, if there are suddenly tiny fast zombies that can’t climb things, we all know who has been trained to climb up on counters as fast as possible. I can tell you it ain’t your lanky asses.”

“I’d like to go back to the fact that Vic is upstairs and that you only fell asleep at four,” Mike interjected as I jumped down to go put the mugs next to the brewing coffee, “is there any specific reason why this would have happened, and with specific reason I mean sex.”

“That is a very inappropriate question, Mike,” I scolded, trying to hide my blush. I was used to kids always making some pretty unintentional dirty remarks, and usually I was able to compose myself a bit better, but when it personally involved me, that changed just slightly.

“Ah, so it’s true!”

“At least your brother is getting some,” I retorted, glaring at him, “at least he had the balls to ask me out. If I recall correctly, you haven’t been out with a girl for a long, long time. Isn’t there a reason for that?” I smirked evilly and glanced quickly at Maya, which she didn’t realise.

“You did not just go there!” He gave me a death glare, mumbling something about murdering Vic later.

Yes, I knew about his ‘little’ crush on Maya. It didn’t take long for Vic to tell me after he had found out. Of course I didn’t tell Maya, but I could totally see it happening. Every small thing he did to her just made so much sense now. It wasn’t just some weird friendship thing, no, he was completely infatuated with her. Maybe I would use the words ‘in love’ yet, because I didn’t know exactly how deep this crush was, but it could be that far already.

“I think I did.” I poured the hot dark liquid in the two mugs, a full cup for me, and a tad of milk for Vic.

“Ok, well, so, Vic never tell me anything about you guy’s sex life, which seems fishy to me, because usually he does,” he tried turning it all back to me, trying to embarrass and tease me, he even came up closer to me, leaning onto the kitchen bar, “so, I’m just here to see if it’s actually existent or he’s just making it all up. I mean, it would have been so much easier if we still all lived together, then I would have been in the room next door to hear it.”

I tried to ignore him as much as possible, getting out some cereal that I could eat even though it wasn’t breakfast time anymore. There was no way I was going to stay here longer just to make food.

He continued going on. “Is it any good? Like, do you just go ‘I love you’, ‘I love you too’, fuck and then done. Is it is actually some kinky shit? You seem innocent, but are you really?”

Not answering any of his questions, I turned around the grab a glass of water, not really planning on doing much with it other than seeming preoccupied.

“Oh, Vic!” He moaned out in a high pitched voice.

I turned back to him and didn’t hesitate as I threw the water right in his face. It splashed into his eyes and started dropping down his chin pathetically. The hair just around his face stuck together in strands, water dripping down as well. I heard Maya giggle in the background before clearing her throat and acting like she didn’t know what was going on, instead ignoring everything.

“Do I want to know why you were just moaning out my name?” Vic appeared behind me, looking at his brother with a sceptical look. He was fully clothed, unlike me, and actually didn’t look like he had just woken up from the dead.

“Your girlfriend made me wet,” Mike ran a hand sideways over his face to swipe some of the water, “in a different way than how you managed to make her wet last night, though.”

Vic raised an eyebrow before laughing softly, “Leave her be, man.”

“I swear to god, next time you will get boiling coffee in your face,” I seethed.

“Are you trying to threaten me?” Mike challenged, not believing I would do anything like that. Would I though?

“I would be afraid if I were you,” Vic told him, interfering before anything else could happen between the two of us. He probably knew that Mike and I both weren’t completely serious, but I didn’t blame him for wanting his girlfriend and brother to get along without any problems.

“I’m just going to go grade those math tests I have been procrastinating on,” I sighed, taking my coffee and cereal in my hands and started walking towards the large table, “I don’t get why they grade stuff in the first grade anyway.”

“Because parents want to see how well their kids are doing?” Tony suggested, putting his feet up on the coffee table.

“That only makes sense for older kids, and not even then. How are you supposed to see how a child is going to do in life when they are six years old? I was the worst at English in elementary school, but I easily managed to take an honours class in high school. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you force kids to redo the year when they are only this young? They’ll always feel like the odd one out.” I sat down with my food and took the pile of tests, frowning at the one on the very top. “For example, this kid…”

Vic walked up and took the paper from read, scanning over it, “Charlie?”

“Yeah, he’s already had to redo the year because of his math grade, and he really isn’t doing any better, no matter how hard he tries and how much help he gets, he just can’t do it. He’s great at art and anything creative, his ‘about me’ piece was great as well, and he even started playing the guitar ever since you came in. But he just can’t do math. He needs to have a passing grade to pass the year.”

“Why don’t you just give him a good grade?” Jaime suggested.

I looked at him with a shock expression, and not because it was the first time in ages since he talked to me, but because of what he said. “Lie and risk getting fired? Have you really not learned anything about-- sorry, let’s not go there again. That’s behind us now.”

“Yeah, no, you’re right,” he nodded, a blush forming on his face as he seemed a lot less confident to say anything else.

Mike sat back down on the couch, really close to Maya, causing her to stand up quickly and walk over to me and Vic, taking her turn to look at the test. “How about I try to help?” She suggested. “Maybe there’s something else that’s preventing and stopping him from doing it?”

It was true, but it would be so difficult to make it happen. Most parents still didn’t like me at that school, still not accepting that I didn’t have much experience. So, I sighed once again, “if I get his parent’s permission…”
