Broken Connection

Have You Worked Out Lately?

Tyler: I need a place to sleep tomorrow, sis. I have an operation to attend at your side of the city and it might get late.
Maya: Get a hotel, Tyler. There’s already someone staying in my guestroom.
Tyler: New boyfriend/girlfriend, I assume.
Maya: Stop assuming, you’re bad at it. Don’t you think a new lover would’ve slept in my room?

Maya’s POV
“So how are we gonna get to know you better, Naira?” Tony asked and he squinted his eyes in Naira’s direction. “How do we know for sure that you are to be trusted with our Maya?”
“Our Maya?” Jaime laughed at Tony and he just shrugged. “I like to think of Maya as a little puppy we need to take care of.” he said.
I rolled my eyes and punched Tony, who sat next to me on the couch, in the arm. “I can take care of myself, thank you very much.” I said and I crossed my arms over each other.
“Ouch. Bad dog.” Tony said stroking his tattooed arm at the place I had hit him.
We were all sitting in my living room, Tony, Naira and me on one couch, Vic, Jaime and Mike on the other. Naira had just come back from her job interview and she hadn’t looked so happy about it. I really hoped she would get a job somewhere, mainly because I just didn’t want her to leave. Now I had my best friend here, I would never let her go again.
“Why don’t we play truth or dare?” I suggested, ignoring Tony’s comment. “That would be an excellent way to get to know each other. Who knows, maybe I even learn things about you guys that I didn’t know.”
Vic raised his eyebrow at me. “Truth or dare? We aren’t twelve anymore.” he said like he was too cool for truth or dare.
I went to sit on the edge of the couch leaning towards Vic. “Listen to me, little Mexican. There’s no age limit to truth or dare.” I said.
Vic laughed and Naira soonly commented: “Hey! Height is irrelevant in this comment, Maya!” she said acting like it was a crime that I needed to pay for.
“Thank you, Naira. I’m glad you’re here. No one else would’ve stood up for me.” Vic said laughing very loudly.
“It’s okay. We tiny people have to stand up for each other. Otherwise no one else will do it.” Naira said matter-of-factly.
“So, truth or dare then?” Mike asked and he glanced over to me. I got a little nervous because I knew that if he had a chance in anyway, he would try to set me up with Jaime. It felt weird knowing that Mike knew something about me that I didn’t want other people to know. I was afraid all the time that he would tell someone, but at the other hand I knew he wouldn’t. He was to be trusted.
“Let’s do it” I said grinning and I creepily rubbed my hands together.
“Oh god. We need to be afraid, I see.” Jaime said laughing and I had to resist the urge to blush.
“Okay Vic, you can start” I said quickly before more attention was shifted to me.
“Well, truth or dare to Naira.” Vic said and gestured to Naira. She thought about it for a second and then answered: “Truth.”
“Do you have any siblings?” Vic asked.
Naira shook her head. “No, I don’t. It’s only me and my father. My mom left us when I was born.” she said. I knew for a matter of fact that she didn’t really mind it anymore. She had been too young to remember it anyway.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Vic said politely.
“It’s okay. It’s been a long time ago.” Naira answered and she shrugged.
This was how it went for a while. The questions directed to Naira were very simple question, because the guys knew practically nothing about her. Questions towards the boys or me were mostly deeper and sometimes even sexual. We already knew everything about each other so it was quite a challenge to find a good question.
The dares were actually quite tame too. Nothing but eating gross shit and run around the house. I think the boys didn’t want to scare Naira away. They probably also noticed that she hadn’t been comfortable around them last time. And being the nice boys they were, they adjusted to that. And it worked because over the afternoon Naira grew way more comfortable and she spoke up and laughed way more. Maybe this was going to work after all!
To the tradition of innocent dares came an end when: “Maya, I dare you to kiss Naira.” Tony said when it was his turn and I had responded ‘dare’. “And a good kiss, not just a peck on the lips.”
In the corner of my eyes I saw Jaime turn pale and I eyed Mike with a panicked expression. He mouthed that he didn’t know what I should do either. I mean, if I rejected it would be quite stupid, because it was just a stupid kiss, but if I accepted they would all think I had a crush on Naira. I didn’t want Jaime to think that...At the other end, it was just a dare. He knew that, right? And declining would only raise suspicion.
“Uhm...Only if you’re okay with it.” I said turning to Naira who was smirking at me.
“Yeah, I trust you. Just don’t fall in love with me.” she said jokingly.
I flipped my hair over my shoulder. “Bitch please, if someone has to be scared of falling in love, then it’s you. I’m an amazing kisser.” I said arrogantly.
She laughed and said: “Well prove it then.”
That’s when I leaned in and let my lips touch hers. She kissed me back and soon our lips moved in sync. I moved my hand in her hair, but didn’t make any more moves. We had to keep it G-rated otherwise these four guys would have to use the bathroom all at the same time.
So after a few seconds I pulled back and when Naira and I opened our eyes, we erupted in giggles that turned into laughter. I was so glad Naira was the kind of person to not make such a big deal out of it. I knew at least thirty girls that would turn down a dare of kissing their bi or lesbian friend.
For at least three minutes me and Naira just couldn’t stop laughing for no reason. I think mostly because we had been so cool about it, I mean, that’s friendship.
The kiss itself was good. I mean there were no sparks of passion or anything, but she was quite alright at kissing, I admit.
“Yeah, can we continue, ladies?” Mike asked laughing.

*

We didn’t went on with playing truth or dare for very long after that. Pretty much because me and Naira kept breaking out in laughter. Mike said he was going to smoke a cigarette and I joined him in the garden (I swear hanging out with Mike is going to get me addicted). Because it was a warm evening, the other’s followed us too. They went to sit on the grass a little distance away from the bench so they wouldn’t have to inhale our smoke all the time. They were sitting with crossed legs and I think they were talking about tour. Naira looked so happy and in her place. I was happy for her. I have only moved once (from my childhood home to this house) and even I knew how it hard was to move. I couldn’t imagine how hard it was to move from the other side of the country to the other. Well, atleast she had me and the boys now.
“So, is she a good kisser?” Mike asked and he wiggled his eyebrows. The sun was slowly setting and left a pink light over my garden. I needed to put on the lights soon.
“Asshole.” I mumbled and he laughed. “If Jaime thought before this that I liked her, then he certainly thinks it now.” I said surprised at how easily things came out with Mike.
“Why don’t you make a move then?” Mike said and I sighed. I looked over to the man that was talking to Tony on the ground. I watched how he smiled when he talked and how he showed off all his teeth while doing it. Even the way he blinked interested me. Gosh, I hated having crushes. I was so depended on someone when I was.
I was shaken out of my thought by my cigarette being suddenly pulled out of my hands. When I looked up I saw that Mike had put it out in the ashtray. “Hey! I hadn’t finished that yet!” I said a little confused and angry.
He stood up, took my hands and dragged me up. “You’re going to talk to him now. It’s only Jaime, for Christ’s sake.”
“Stop it, Mike.” I hissed at him as he had managed to drag me up and I was now standing across from him. “I can’t do this. Why do you think after almost three years I still haven’t made a move?”
He sighed and took my wrists. “You can do this, Maya. Otherwise he will end up with your best friend and then you will see them get married and shit and it will hurt you the rest of your life, because I know you, if that will happen you’re too kind to leave either of their sides.”
I looked down at my feet. I knew he was right, but getting the courage was hard. “I don’t know, Mike…” I said.
“But I do. You’re good at flirting, you’re pretty and smart. I’m sure he likes you and if he doesn’t then I’m sure you’ll make.” Mike said.
I looked up at him, he looked like he really meant what he said. I didn’t say anything back, trying to find a reason to do nothing again.
Mike sighed again and turned me around so I was facing the group of friends on the ground. Tony seemed to be involved in Vic’s and Naira’s conversation now. Jaime was staring a little bit bored in front of him. “See? Perfect.” Mike said from behind me. “He is bored. We all know how unbelievably annoying he can get when he’s bored. Everyone’s happy if you talk to him, so go!” he said and he gave me a gentle push in Jaime’s direction.
It was enough for me though to trip and almost fall over. I could just and save myself from falling on my face, by holding myself up with my hands.
I heard Mike snicker behind me and resisted the urge to punch him in the face. “Are you okay?” I heard Jaime say with his gentle deep voice. His voice was one of the reasons I had fallen for him.
I moved my head up and was met with his eyes. “Yeah, I just tripped. You know me, clumsy me.” I stumbled over my words. Normally I was perfectly able to talk to Jaime, but now that I actually wanted to make a move all the wrong things came out.
“What a weird pair you and your friend are. You’re constantly falling in front of my eyes.” he said grinning. No shit, dude. I thought by myself.
I laughed softly at his remark and sat up again. It gave me a little time to think about what I actually wanted to say. Before I knew it another stupid remark came out again. “Have you worked out lately? You look a bit buffer” I asked. It didn’t sound as seductive as I usually used this question. Hell, it didn’t sound seductive at all. It sounded like I was a freshmen girl asking out a senior boy who also happened to be captain of the football game. Luckily the rest was too busy in their conversation to notice.
Jaime raised an eyebrow and laughed. “Do you hear what you’re saying, Maya? Me and working out? Yeah maybe lifting pizza boxes.” he said chuckling.
“Oh, I bet you can lift hundreds of those.” I said laughing. I was glad he had made this moment a little less weird.
“You can bet your ass I can.” he said grinning. “Maybe even hundreds. Pretty impressive, huh?”
I knew he didn’t see this as flirting, but a little hope sparked in me that this little game was less innocent than it actually was. “Jeez Himes, that must certainly spark the interest of the ladies.” I said sarcastically.
He laughed the laugh he always laughed when something was unexpectedly funny. “I’m sure it does. I guess I just have to stop playing bass and start lifting pizza boxes for a living.” he said and I laughed.
Then I suddenly remembered something. “Hey, we still have to finish watching the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Wanna do that soon?” I asked and his face lighted up a little. Maybe being alone with him would give me an opportunity to make an actual move.
“Yeah, seems cool! When can we come over?” he asked with his usual happy face.
My heart sunk a little, but I regained myself pretty soon. I didn’t think he saw it as a date, anyway.
“Uhm, maybe it’s better if we don’t invite the rest. They fell asleep watching the first one, so I don’t think they’ll really understand the other movies.” I said and I hoped he didn’t notice anything. I didn’t want to be let down before I had actually had a shot.
“True. They weren’t as dedicated to Jack Sparrow as we were.” he said smiling.
“There should be a captain in there somewhere!” I said quoting the movie. “Sorry, that was a horrible joke.” When I awkwardly laughed I softly lay my hand on his shoulder and pulled it back again. A friendly gesture that wouldn’t raise suspicion, but still enough to make a man notice how cute you actually were. Damn, I still got it.
“It’s okay. It wasn’t that bad.” he said laughing.
“At your place then? You actually have the DVD’s and they’re not all on Netflix.” I said. That would get rid of Naira too. Something told me that I didn’t really have a fair shot when she was around.
“Yeah, that’s cool. When?” he asked.
I was just about to open my mouth when I heard the doorbell ring through the house. I wondered who that could be at this hour. I looked at the sky and it was turning very dark already. “We’ll talk about that later, Himes. I need to get the door.” I said confused and I stood up from the grass to walk back inside the house.
When I got to the door and opened it, I was met with two dark eyes that looked exactly like mine. The blonde boy had a small suitcase in his hands.
I groaned. “Jesus Tyler, I told you that you couldn’t stay here! I actually have a guest!” I said annoyingly.
My twin brother looked passed me, in the direction of the glass doors that separated the garden with the house and raised an eyebrow. “Those musicians? Aren’t they like really rich? Why would they have to stay with you?” he said with his annoying pragmatic voice.
I put my hand on my hip to express my attitude. “One, that’s none of your business. Two, they’re not staying here, my internet friend Naira is and three, you’re rich too! Get a hotel!” I said while counting my arguments on my fingers.
Tyler raised his eyebrow. “Why would I take a hotel if staying with my sister is a lot cheaper. It saves money, something you should think about.” he said as he walked passed me into my house.
“Hey! I didn’t let you in! This is my house!” I yelled at him, but he was already in the living room.
“Maya, I’m your little brother. We’re family and you’re telling me you can’t find room for me?” he said with a judging tone.
Fucking god. He was playing the family card. That meant that if I didn’t give him what he wanted, that he would tell my parents and they would prefer him even more over me. Tyler was practically the perfect son: he was surgeon (well, in training but still), he was rich, successful and was engaged to an equally as perfect girl. He was everything I was not and even though my parents never said anything about it, I knew they secretly prefered him over me.
“Fine.” I said through my teeth. “But you’re sleeping on the couch. I’m not going to trade my bed for a person that just walks in and expects there to be made space for him.”
Tyler smiled his victorious smile, walked over to me and pressed a kiss on my cheek. “Thank you, sister. Generous like always.” he said.

Notes

HII EVERYONE! *waves dramatically*

So...quite a lot of changes happened. and a new character! What do you think of Tyler, huh? That's a retorical question. Bc the answer is always: stupid.

just kidding. He wasn't all like this. And we're getting close to the main problem of the story! Only one chapter after this and then things will go down! wahahaahaah (all writers are evil)
