Chapter twenty-seven:

“Bye Jaime!” I say waving as he drives away.

I walk back inside closing the door. I go upstairs to check on Mike. I look inside his room but he isn’t there. I go back downstairs to check to see if he’s on the back deck but I don’t see him. His car is still in the driveway so he couldn’t have left unless he went for a walk.

I go down to the basement as soon as I open the door I hear faint drumming.

I creep down the stairs getting closer and closer to the noise. I sit at the bottom of the stairs and watch him play. He doesn’t notice me. He’s sitting on his stool wearing only shorts and his headphones. You can see small droplets of sweat on his forehead, he must have been down here for a few hours while Jaime was over. It’s amazing to watch how into it he gets. You can see that he puts his heart and soul into it. With every pound of the drum, he drifts further and further away from reality. His version of therapy.

He starts to slow down. Each drum less aggressive than the one before until he comes to a complete stop. He takes his headphones off and sits there heavily breathing. He wipes the sweat off his forehead with the t-shirt that was on the floor beside him.

“I love watching you play.” I say. He doesn’t look up from his drums, he starts cleaning up his equipment. “Okay come on why won’t you talk to me?”

“I’m tired Spencer I can’t do this tonight.” Mike sighs.

“I just want to talk to you Mike.” I walk closer to him.

“I’m sorry I didn’t answer your question earlier. I don’t know the answer. I want to tell you everything will be fine and I just want to just love you but I’m a fuck up. I fuck up every good thing in my life and I don’t want you to get caught in that. I don’t want to become your problem.” He says putting away his drumsticks.

“It would just be better if you leave now.”

“Mike, look at me. This is our only problem right now. We both are scared and we fight about it. I push you away, you pull me closer and then you push me away. Our relationship has just started but were both creating problems by over thinking things that could or could not happen.”

I walk over to him and grab the sides of his face. “We both need to stop and just let things be.”

“You’re right I’m sorry.” Mike sighs.

“I’m sorry too, let’s head to bed it’s getting kind of late.” I kiss him gently on the lips.

“It’s only ten, don’t be a baby.” Mike says.

“Maybe I just want to go cuddle with you.” I pout giving him the puppy dog eyes.

“Here come with me.” Mike grabs my hand and takes me up the stairs. He slides on a hoodie that’s hanging by the front door and grabs his car keys. We head outside, he opens the passenger door I crawl inside, he shuts my door and hops in on the driver side.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“You’ll see.” Mike says starting the car and backing out of the driveway.

We drive for about 10 minutes talking and laughing, just having fun. We reach a Dairy Queen and Mike pulls into the drive-thru.

“Hi can I get two large strawberry cheese quake blizzards….. Thanks.” Mike orders.

As he pulls ahead to the window I ask “How did you know that’s my favourite kind?”

“Spence, I’ve known you for over ten years. How would I not know?” Mike smiles. He pays for the ice cream and then continues driving until we reach a secluded look out point. He shuts off the car, walks around to my door and opens it.

“Malady.” Mike bows. I get out of the car.

“Who knew you could be such a gentleman?” I snicker.

“Wait here for a second.” Mike says. I stand in front of the car, holding the ice cream waiting for him. He walks around the back of the car and opens the trunk. He grabs a blanket, closes the trunk and walks over to me. We both sit on the hood of the car, Mike spreads the blanket over our legs I pass him his blizzard.

“This where I come to think.” Mike smiles.

“I can see why; it’s beautiful.” I take in the scenery. You can see the water off in the distance, all the palm trees and the buildings.

“Plus it’s one of the only places in the city where you can actually see the stars.” He points at the sky.

I lean back and admire the stars. They’ve never been so bright. Mike leans back as well and wraps his arm around me. Just like they do in the movies. I could get used to this.

“You know I’ve never taken anyone here before.” Mike says looking at me.

“No?” I ask looking into his big beautiful brown eyes. At this moment sitting on the car, the amazing scenery in the background, I realize how in love with him I actually am.

“I’ve never had anyone worth taking until now.” He says before placing a soft kiss on my lips.

We sat there for hours talking, it was definitely a night to remember.
