Into You.

"Stay safe mom."

"I don't even know this aunt. Since when have you had a sister anyway?" I asked my mother as she tried her best to shove all of my belongings into as little suitcases as humanly possibly.

"I created distance between her and I after you were born, that's when all of these things with your father started happening and I couldn't put her in danger. We've kept in minimal contact over the years so she knows most of what has been going on. I couldn't tell you about her because I needed to protect her and I didn't want it to slip when you were little. Now the circumstances have changed. He's not after you, he's after me, so you need to go live with your aunt. You're a 17 year old girl who's lived form one hotel to the next, what kind of a life is that? I'm not able to provide for you now, and I never have been able to before. You understand right?" she finished and looked at me.

"I understand. All my life I've lived on the run with you, but I've had a pretty good life if you ask me, it could have been a whole lot worse. You're not as bad as a mother as you think that you are." I told her. She just smiled at me and then we proceeded to take my bags to the car.

My mother, Alicia Fuentes, was shipping me off to my aunts, her sister's, house in San Diego California. I've never been to California before, which is surprising since I have just about been to every state in this country. My dad, had gotten out of prison a few years ago and kept coming after my mom, so we were always on the run. My mom was giving up, I could feel it, she was tired of running, and honestly after the life that she has had, I would be tired too. Which is why she is sending me away. She's gonna quit and doesn't want me anywhere near that man when she does. She doesn't want him to have any contact with me, not that he's ever wanted to contact me anyway, he doesn't even believe that I'm his biological daughter.

"Alright, your aunt is going to pick you up on the other end okay? Just look for a blonde lady, she'll recognize you before you even know who she is, so don't worry. You'll be just fine." my mom began. She and I were never really sentimental, we had never been exactly close. Despite the fact that we always moved around, I was usually on my own.

"Are you going to be alright?" I asked her, finally meeting her gaze.

"Of course I will, aren't I always?" She was, for the most part, but the fear in her voice and the tears in her eyes stated otherwise. "I'm gonna miss you." I told her.

"I'm gonna miss you too. You take care of yourself, and don't be getting' into trouble okay? I don't want you to become anything like me you promise? Promise me that you will try your hardest to find a wonderful guy, one who loves you and will protect you, one that will not be anything like your father. Be stable." she said.

"I promise." I half smiled at her. I didn't believe in family. I didn't believe in marriage, and I sure as hell didn't believe that I would ever find a guy that would love me. I'm damaged, nobody wants to deal with somebody that's this damaged, and I've come to accept that. But I couldn't let my mom know, it wouldn't make her happy.

"Stay safe mom." I told her as I hugged her.

"You too." She took a good look at me one last time before turning around and walking out of the airport without looking back. I just stood there, in the middle of the airport watching her leave. I took a deep breath and then turned around myself and made my way through the airport security lines.
