Chasing The Night

eight.

Today was the day that Jared was coming out to visit, but Kate couldn’t have cared less. It had been two whole days since everything had happened with Tony that night, and Kate couldn’t stop thinking about it. She was a mess and she didn’t know why it was affecting her as much as it was. Her heart ached in her chest every time she thought about what had happened that night and how hurt Tony looked. She hadn’t bothered hanging out with any of the other bands in the last two days. All she had done was play the shows, walk of stage and back to the bus. She was moping and she was angry at herself for it. Kate had no reason to be sad, or at least that’s how she felt. She had ripped Tony’s heart to shreds and yet she was sad? Kate hated herself.

Knowing that Jared was coming out today made everything worse. He was going to be here for two days and if she was perfectly honest, she couldn’t be fucked dealing with him. All Kate wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep. Jared had text Kate about 10 minutes ago saying that he had landed and that he would be around 2 or so hours. She didn’t even bother replying.

Jesse, Mitch and Matt grew worried about their fellow band member. She was still playing their shows with all the energy she usually had, but other than that she was far from herself. They had a small idea of what had gone down the other night as Vic had filled them in on what he knew. Mitch especially hated watching his best friend deteriorate before his eyes. Deep down, he knew exactly why it was hurting her so much. As much as Kate hadn’t pieced it together, Mitch knew she was still head over heels for Tony. Mitch had seen his best friend regretting and hurting for month after month after leaving Tony. After she met Jared, he thought it would be good for her but it wasn’t. She rushed into it way too quickly, engaged in 6 months, married in just over a year. Mitch watched his best friend go down hill. She had given up everything for Jared. The band, her friends and most of all, her personality. From the stubborn, loud and fun girl he had known since he was six, she was the quiet, domestic, housewife. Jared had taken the life from the bright 26 year old.

Making his way to Kate’s bunk, Mitch pulled back the curtain to her bunk. “Kate, Jared’s going to be here soon. You need to get up.”

Kate shook her head. “I still have a few hours.”

“C’mon, Kate.” Mitch sighed. “You’ve been in here for the last two days.”

“So?”

“So, I’m sick of it, Kate.” Mitch snapped. “This band stopped everything to watch you marry this guy and now you can’t even get out of bed for him. If you’re not happy with him, then fucking do something about it.”

“Are you joking?” Kate retorted. “You have no idea how I’m feeling!”

“For fuck sake, Kate! You’re still head over heels in love with Tony and you know just as well as I do that you jumped into marrying Jared because you thought that Tony was the only one for you and you screwed it up.” Mitch didn’t mean to blow up at her, all he wanted was to see her happy but at this stage she wasn’t doing it herself. “I’m sorry, Kate. But you also know as well as I do that Jared is no good for you. He’s controlling and none of us even know who you are anymore. And now he’s getting physical with you, I’m not going to fall for the ‘It’s a mistake’ bullshit anymore.”

Kate was take back by how blunt her best friend was being. It hurt her. Jumping out of her bunk, she pushed past him and out the bus door. She had no idea where she was going but she had to get out of there. It was all too much for her to take because sadly, she knew Mitch was right. It all made sense as much as she didn’t want it too. Kate knew she had jumped into things with Jared because after messing up with Tony, she took what she could get. She couldn’t even remember the last time she was actually happy and not pushing aside the ‘what if’ thoughts about Tony. That was a lie, she could remember, It was with Tony. That was the last time she smiled for the sake of smiling, laughed for the sake of laughing and was 100 percent in love. But what could she do now?

Kate was composed and back at the bus by the time that Jared had arrived at tonight’s venue. Once again, she was back to pushing aside her true self and feelings. Putting on a happy front, she met Jared with a smile on her face. After putting his stuff in her bunk, Jared suggested the go for a walk.

“I missed you so much.” Jared smiled, placing his arm around her as they walked. Kate couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable.

“I missed you too.” She lied. The pair caught up as the just casually walked around the venue area, occasionally running into some of the other bands which Kate politely introduced to her husband. All was going okay until they ran into the last person Kate wanted to see. Tony. Kate quickly made a divert away from him, but it was too late.

“Aren’t you going to introduce me to your husband?” Tony’s voice called from behind her. “Bit rude, don’t you think?”

For the first time ever, Kate couldn’t read the tone in Tony’s voice. This scared her a little. What was she about to walk into? Sighing, she turned around to face Tony. “Sorry.” She said. “Tony, this is my husband Jared. Jared, this is Tony.”

The two boys shook hands. This was going okay, for now which surprised Kate. “So, Jared how long have you guys been married?”

“Over a year now.” Jared smiled proudly, pulling Kate into him.

Tony nodded. “Pretty short amount of time after meeting then.”

“Tony, don’t.” Kate snapped. Even Jared could sense the hostile tone coming from Tony, causing him to get protective of his wife.

“Yeah actually, it was.” Jared snapped. “It’s called falling in love.”

“I wouldn’t know anything about that.” Tony snapped back, aiming it at Kate. It hurt her, and Tony could see it.

“Do you have a problem with my wife?” Jared was getting tired of Tony’s attitude. “Because this is bullshit.”

“No, but I have a problem with who she’s become.” Tony stated. “And I blame you for that.”

Jared had had enough. After that remark he stormed off leaving Kate and Tony there awkwardly. “What the hell was that?!”

“Mitch talked to me.” Right after Kate had stormed off, Mitch went straight to Tony explained everything to him, leaving out the fact that Kate was still in love with him. But Tony understood the situation for the most part.

“For your information Mitch knows fuck all.” Kate yelled. “You have no fucking right to do what you just did because you have no clue what my relationship is like.”

“But I’ve seen the change in you, Kate.”

“I made my choices like I did and I’m sticking by that.”

“Then why are you crying?” Kate hadn’t even noticed that she was tearing up. Knowing that both Tony and Mitch were right, she did what she did best and simply ran.
