Chasing The Night

fourteen.

His mind raced as he tried to think of where she could be. Tony wandered and wandered until he saw the small girl. She was sitting on one of the many sets of metal tables that lined the outside of the venue. Her legs rested on the chairs and she sat on the tables, starring off into the distance. Tony began to walk towards her, a small smiled played on her lips when she spotted him walking towards her. Taking one last drag on her cigarette, she ashed it on the table beside her. "You really don't give up, do you Perry?" She grinned as the boy took a seat beside her. He smiled, shyly.

"You're smoking." He stated, looking at her.

"What a compliment!" She joked, nudging him. Tony just looked at her, trying to be as serious as he could. Kate then shrugged. "Stress reliever."

"Why are you stressed?" He asked, trying not to give away that he knew and that knowing was the sole reason he was here. He really was worried for Kate.

Kate rolled her eyes at him. "Don't act as if you don't know, Tone. I'm assuming you found my mail?"

Tony sighed and nodded. "Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Kate shrugged. "It didn't seem like that big of a deal until it was official, I guess."

"Kate, you went through a divorce all alone." Tony stated. "That's a hard thing to do, let alone by yourself."

"I know." She sighed, twisting the wedding ring that still sat on her left hand. "I just, I didn't know what to say to anyone."

"You could have talked to me." Tony said, causing Kate to smile a little.

"I know. And I love you for being that boy to me, Turtle. I just needed to be alone on this so I knew that it was the right thing to do."

"And was it?"

Taking a deep breath, she turned to him. "Sadly. I couldn't keep lying to myself or him. Pretending that my heart was still in it was too much for the both of us."

"What happened?" Tony pulled Kate into him, relishing in the warmth her body brought to his.

"A lot of different things, Tone." She sighed, relaxing into him. "I think I was just in love with the idea of being in love with someone that I jumped on the first person who wanted that with me. A lot of things made me realize that it wasn't what I wanted anymore. This tour, you. It all helped."

Tony looked down at her, a confused expression crossing his face. "How did I make you realize that?"

Kate grinned. "This whole tour and being on the road again made me realize that I was someone and I had something before I gave it all up to get married and settle down.I missed it all too much that it hurt. But being here, I remember what it's like to breathe." Kate grinned. "You taught me how to breathe again."

Tony sat there taking it in. How much it had all changed since she had left 3 years ago. He still loved her with everything he had and for the first time in those 3 years, he felt like there was a chance that she felt the same.

"That fight we had back in Atlanta, the night you left. I'm sorry for it." Tony sighed.

Kate laughed a little. "I know you are. And so am I."

"If we had never had that fight, do you think that we would still be together?"

"With every last bone in my body." She smiled. "Do you?"

Tony nodded. "There's not a single day that I don't regret not fighting for you. I hate myself for letting you go and throw yourself into getting married."

Kate slipped her hand into his, leaning her head into his chest. "Maybe that's what it had to take for us to realize that we have something worth fighting for?" She looked up at him. "Fate has this funny way of knocking people over the backs of the head for being idiots. Maybe 3 years, a marriage and broken hearts was out kick."

Tony's heart was practically in his throat as she said this. After three years of being away from her, watching her get married and be happy with out him, hearing this made him happy beyond comprehension. “You mean you’ll be with me again?”

Kate sighed. “I think we should wait a little bit.”

“Why?” Tony frowned. “I love you and you love me and right now that’s all that matters.”

“Tone, you have to understand that I only just got divorced.” She tried to explain. “Imagine how that will look?”

“I don’t want to understand and I don’t care how it looks, Kate.” Tony broke, feeling desperate now. “I just want you back.”

“Tony. . .”

“No, Kate.” He stopped her. “I spent three years thinking that I would never see you again. I was so in love with you that whole time. Now you’re right in front of me, telling me that you still love me and you expect me not to fight for it? I’m not letting you go this time.”

Tears were making their way down Kate’s face at this time. She knew she had pushed Tony away for long enough. She shouldn’t care how bad it would look to other people, what she should care about was the fact that he still wanted her.

"Come back San Diego with me." He stated, throwing his head and heart in head first. "After this tour come home and live with me. Nat and Jaxin will be stoked and you won't need to worry about finding a new place now that you're not going to be with Jared. Just, come home with me."

This time, without a single hesitation in her voice, she smiled up at Tony. "Okay."

The grin on Tony's face mirrored the one on Kate's. The couple were finally happy once again. Tony pulled the small girl into him, pressing his lips to hers. It was like they had never been apart. They were happy again.
