Chasing The Night

twelve.

The past few days Tony and Kate had been spending a lot of time together. They would go out to lunch, hang around each other at bus parties and other small things. Every time they were together, it was like nothing else mattered. There was no worry about their past relationship or the fact that Kate was married. Nothing. They were just having fun together. But as soon as they parted ways, both of them were hit with realisation that they wanted more.

At first, Kate had been confused about what she wanted from Tony. But it seemed like now she was getting divorced, she missed Tony more than ever. All of those feelings she had been holding in for three years, came flooding back every time she would spend time with him.

Tony, still unaware of the divorce, was taking in every moment he could get with her. Knowing that the tour ended in a few weeks scared him. Was she just going to disappear again? He had no idea.

The pair’s flirtation hadn’t gone unnoticed among their fellow band members. Mitch could see how happy being with Tony was making Kate, but he needed to talk to her about it. No one else knew of the divorce, so while it all felt innocent to Kate, she had to realise the image it portrayed to Tony and everybody else.

“I come baring coffee.” Mitch walked into the back lounge where Kate was currently playing on her phone. Seeing her best friend, she locked her phone and grinned.

“You are a life saver!” Kate grabbed the coffee off Mitch and took s quick sip, “8am is not my friend.”

Mitch laugh lightly, placing his phone and coffee on the table. “You got any plans for today?”

“I think Tony wanted to watch a movie or something.” Subconsciously, the thought brought a smile to her face.

“I assume he doesn’t know about the divorce yet?” Mitch asked, breaking Kate out of her happy bubble. Kate shook her head. “You have to tell him, Kate.”

“I don’t want anyone knowing until it’s official, Mitch.” Kate stated. “He hasn’t even signed the papers yet so I don’t want to be blabbing around about it if Jared decides to start a shit fight over it.”

“Kate, everyone can see that you’re still head over heels for Tony and you have to understand that you going around flirting with him while still being married, it’s going to hurt him.”

“You don’t think that I don’t get that?” Kate growled. “Every single feeling I have for him has come flooding back in the last week and it scares the shit out of me. But I need to get my shit together before even attempting anything with him.”

“Why?” Mitch argued. “You’re pretty much dating the guy now!”

“Because how do you think it will look if I get divorced and all of the sudden I’m back on team Tony?” Kate snapped. “Don’t you think that Tony, and everyone else, will question if he’s just a rebound? And what if he is? What if all these feelings are just to help me get over Jared? I can’t hurt him like that again, Mitch.”

Mitch sighed, finally understanding where his best friend was coming from. “You’re not going to hurt him, Kate.” Mitch told her. “You’ve been in love with Tony this whole time, you know it as well as I do. This time you just need to be honest with him.”

Kate knew he was right, but she wasn’t ready to go telling anyone about her divorce just yet. But she knew that she had to talk to Tony somehow. “You know that I love you, right?”

“Of course I do.” Mitch grinned at his best friend. “Why?”

“Because you’ve put up with me all this time and still manage to be my best friend.”

Mitch walked over to his best friend and pulled her into a hug. While, at times, Kate’s mindset confused the hell out of him, he understood her and she understood him. It killed him to see Kate caught in the situation she was, but he knew that she would come out on top of it all in the end.

After The Sky’s Alive’s soundcheck, Kate sat at the table eating her lunch. She felt better after her talk with Mitch, who yet again knew when to put her back in her place. Tony was coming over to the bus in a little while to watch movies before his soundcheck. She couldn’t help but smile as she ate at her lunch.

The sound of Kate’s phone ringing echoed from the table and through the bus. Jared’s name came across the screen for the first time since she had filed for the divorce. Her lawyer had taken care of most of the contacting Jared, up until this point. Kate’s stomach dropped.

“Hello?” Her voice was shaky as she picked up the call, not sure what to expect from him.

“I’m not signing these papers.” Jared’s voice growled down the phone. “How dare you not even bother to call me and discuss this with me? Instead I get a phone call from your lawyer and the papers in the mail.”

“I didn’t know what else to do.” Kate sighed. “It wasn’t exactly something I knew how to approach.”

“A phone call would have been nice.” Jared growled again. “I can’t believer you’re giving in this easy.”

“I can’t do this anymore, Jared.” Tears were making their way into Kate’s eyes. As much as Jared was a dick, she wasn’t heartless. She had loved him but she wasn’t ready to give up her life for him.

“Do what?!” He yelled. “You act as if so much was wrong with us!”

“I was becoming everything I didn’t want o be because of you. I’m 26 and I’m a housewife, Jared. I pretty much bowed down and did everything you said.”

“And?” Jared questioned, like that wasn’t reason for her to be doing this. He acted like that was exactly what he wanted.

“I have so much more to me then just being you’re stay at home wife.” She snapped back, not believing how selfish he was being. “I have a life to live. I’m too young to be doing this.”

“You couldn’t have thought of that before we got married?”

“You’re right, I should have.” Kate admitted, knowing he had her there. “But I expected a little more support from you in doing what I wanted to do. Not just being your house bitch.”

“We had one fight, Kate.” He snapped. “One fucking fight and you do this?”

“A fight where you called me a selfish whore, accused me of cheating and went to hit me for the second time!”

Kate was so caught up that he hadn’t heard Tony enter the bus until she looked up. Cursing under her breath, she wondered how much he had heard.

“You know what, Katelynn? You can get fucked. Tony can have you because you’re useless and pathetic as a wife anyway.” Jared spat. “I’ll sign the damn papers to get this over with.”

Jared hung up the phone in his rage and Kate felt relieved. Placing her phone down on the table, she breathed a heavy sigh. “He hit you?” Tony’s voice questioned as he made his way over to the table.

“Not exactly.” Kate’s voice was on the verge of tears again, her emotions a mess. “He just got a little too rough a few times.”

“You can’t keep dealing with this, Kate.” Tony pulled the small girl into him and held her there.

“It’s complicated, Tony.”
