Chasing The Night

eleven.

“Tony.” Kate called out to the tall boy as he rode his BMX bike aimlessly around today’s venue. “Hey, wait up.”

Surprised to hear Kate calling for him, Tony stopped and turned around to face her. “What’s up?” He asked once she had caught up to him. She still managed to make him nervous after all this time, and it was vice versa too. Tony still made Kate feel like a twelve year old school girl with butterflies in her stomach. A feeling she missed.

“I know that I’ve said thank you a million times for saving my ass the other night.” Kate started, feeling nervous about what she was about to ask him. “But, I was wondering if I could take you out to lunch to say a proper thank you?”

In a matter of seconds Tony’s day had been made. Now Kate wasn’t the only one feeling like a 12 year old girl with butterflies. Even if he wanted too, Tony couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across his face. “I’d like that.”

“Good, because I wasn’t going to take no for an answer.” She grinned back at him. “There’s a cute little diner about five minutes from here. I was thinking half an hour or so?”

Tony nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”

“I’ll see you then, Turtle.”

The pair texted each other when they were ready to go and met outside Pierce The Veil’s bus. Kate led the way past the rest of the tour buses and out of the venue grounds. She led him out the back way knowing there would already be hundreds of kids lined up outside the doors of the venue. It was a short walk but the pair took advantage of the fresh air and the daylight. It took everything in Tony’s power not to grab Kate’s hand, out of habit, as they walked side by side. The two of them arrived at the diner not long after. It was pretty much dead when they walked inside to order, so they had the pick of pretty much any seat in the place. Kate headed for a small booth down the back and picked up a menu.

“I could seriously go for some good fries right now.” Kate groaned. “Oh and a large chocolate shake.”

“Last time you had that combo I ended up holding back your hair in a Burger King parking lot.” Tony laughed. “You pretty much inhaled the plate as soon as it hit the table.”

“I was hungry okay?!” Kate retorted, scoffing at him. “Besides from what I remember you were the one who threw up at taco bell on our first date!”

“I was hung over okay!”

“I’m pretty sure you were still drunk, actually.” Kate laughed along with Tony. Any nerves the pair had felt were suddenly gone and they were back to a comfortable friendship level.

The pair spent hours at the diner that afternoon, talking endlessly about things they had done together when they were close. None of it awkward, not even talks of their past relationship. Fries were thrown, laughs were had and it was an all round good time for the both of them. It was almost like fresh start for the both of them, once which there friendship needed.

“I missed this.” Kate admitted, leaning into Tony as they walked back to the venue. “I feel like we needed this.”

Tony placed his arm around the girl, happily pulling Kate into him. “I’ve missed it so much.” Tony took the time to inhale her familiar sent and take in the close proximity of them. “I’m sorry if I hurt you by saying the things that I did.”

Kate shook her head. “I should have told you that I was married.”

Married. That word stung Tony as he became fully aware of how their position right now would look to everyone else around them. As much as Tony was willing to fight to have her back, it scared him to death that if he were to get what he wanted, the mess it would leave for Kate.

Consciously, Tony let go of Kate causing her to feel guilty. She sighed, looking up at him. “I’m sorry.”

Tony shook his head. “It’s fine.” He sighed. “I guess old habits die hard, hey?”

The pair was silent as they headed back to the venue. Saying their goodbyes and exchanging a hug, they both headed back to their busses to get ready for sound checks.

Kate wanted to burst when she got back to the bus. They whole day Tony had made her feel exactly like he had when they were together and that was happier then she had been in such a long time. Part of her wanted to tell Tony it was okay to hold her because that was what she wanted and that she wasn’t with Jared anymore, but the other part knew that she had to keep the divorce on the down low for now. She needed to do this herself, without any influenced decisions. Kate needed to know that leaving Jared was the right thing to do.
