Let Me In

“I’m saying that I want to be with you, Sarah,” I finally managed to say and it all felt like word vomit “I know this is sudden, and probably not the way you imagined it but I'm an awkward piece of shit who has been a heartless asshole for months and now I've found something - someone - that makes me want to be a better person every day” then silence dominated the car. Sarah’s hand dropped the fry she was about to dip in my McFlurry and her stare was just blank. I couldn’t change things anymore, my feelings were out there and all I could hope for is that they would be reciprocated. “Please say something,”

Instead of responding me with any kind of speech, she pulled herself towards me, dropping her bag of food on the floor and climbing over the center piece onto my lap and planted her lips on mine for a couple of seconds before placing her hands on my cheeks.

“I like you too Mike, and I really want to be with you,” she said, a large smile popped into her face, in turn same with mine. Our feelings were finally on the table, and there were no wild cards to be played. “I didn’t know what you were thinking about us, and I was scared of saying anything,” she said, sounding completely sincere. This was unlike me, this wasn’t what I’m used to; I was a pig and I was completely sure I didn’t deserve her and somehow she was into me too.
“Well, you don’t know how relieving this is for me,I didn’t want this trip to go by and us not knowing where we stood, but I haven’t had to express feelings to anyone in a while,” I admitted. She smiled and glanced down, blushing slightly; I could see she was just as happy as I was.

We stared at each other for a couple of seconds as I placed my hand softly on her neck, then I leaned in and pressed my lips against hers. A shot of happiness rushed through my veins as she responded to my kiss. We had kissed before, but this time it all felt so different; now our feelings were all out and somehow she felt the same way about me as I did about her. After a couple of minutes of soft kissing, we picked up the pace and clearly felt the tension growing. However a knock on the window disrupted our moment; Sarah, completely startled, jumped and screamed right in my ear. We both turned around and found one of the McDonald’s worker right outside of my car, asking me to lower my window.

“I’m sorry but this is a violation of our public display of affection policy and we have to ask you to leave,” she said, monotonically before walking away from us. I pulled up the window and the moment it was fully up Sarah and I began to laugh as hard as we could; she leaned back and with her laughter she ended up pressing the honk with her back which just made us laugh more.

This semi-romantic, passionate and serious moment had turned into a little bit of a comedy skit in just a matter of minutes, but in all honesty it really suited our dynamic and the kind of relationship we had: we were flirtatious, we were sassy and feisty but we both had our romantic side. It was quite the perfect moment, and I wouldn’t change it for the world; seeing her pearly-white smile, the lovely sound of her laugh, the dimples that formed in her face. Everything was perfect.

“I think we should get going before they come back for us again,” I said moving a strand of her hair away from her face. She smiled and kissed me softly before moving back to her seat and buckling up as we prepared ourselves for the second part of the trip.
