Let Me In

“Are you all packed?” I heard Vic yell from his room. We would be gone for around 4 days so there wasn’t much to pack other than a couple of tanks, some pants and maybe a couple of trainers for our day at the canyon.

“When have I needed more than fifteen minutes to pack, Vic?”

“Are you excited to see Sarah?” he asked me and my heart stopped. Sarah and I hadn’t seen each other since our date and I of course was excited to see her, however I was scared of where our relationship was going. Granted, I really liked her but it didn’t mean that I wasn’t scared of getting my heart broken one more time.

“Yeah, I’m picking her up in like 10 minutes and then we’ll be on our way,” I admitted. Unlike most times we played out of state, everyone was driving separately; since we were going to the Canyon, everyone including the girls were joining and it would be too much of a mess to be eight people in the bus and so we rented a couple of U-Haul transport bunkers and attached it to Tony’s car which was the biggest one and loaded up all of our gear in it. Tony and Erin were already on their way, and so after picking Sarah up we would begin our drive to Vegas and meet the rest of the band there.

“Have you guys talked about your relationship by any chance?” he asked. That was a great question. Technically Sarah and I hadn’t talked about what we were, and I was very scared of starting that conversation because I didn’t want to jinx what we had. “I’ll take your silence as a no,”

“I don’t know how to Vic,”

“Maybe you should take sometime this trip to discuss it,” he suggested and it didn’t sound like such a bad idea.

“You’re right, I’m gonna call her and let her know I’m about to leave,” I took my phone and dialed Sarah’s number; the picture of her at the beach during our date came up on my phone, making me smile.

“Hello,” she said softly.

“Hey, it’s me,”

“I know many me’s”

“You’re a funny girl aren’t you?”

“So I’m told,”

“I’m leaving my house in about ten minutes, so be ready,”

“Alright, see you soon.”

“Hey Sarah?” I gulped

“Yes?”

“I’m glad you’re coming with me,” There was a moment of silence in the line after the words came out of my mouth. I really was happy she was coming and I hadn’t expressed it with all honesty before. In all seriousness, I hadn’t been fully honest with any girl since Alysha and this just added to the fear of truly falling for this girl. I knew Vic was right when it came to needing to have a talk with her, and I was going to take advantage of our time alone to do so, I just didn’t know how to start the conversation.

“I’m glad you invited me,” There was joy in her response. We said our goodbyes and I finished packing my suitcase before putting on my snapback and then I got ready to leave the house. I did a mental checklist: clothes, computer, cables, phone, car keys, sunglasses, wallet and then I was ready to leave.

“Alright, I’m leaving Vic! I’ll see ya in a couple of hours!” I yelled from downstairs before grabbing a bottle of water, a can of Monster and heading out the door.

My car was pristinely clean and it smelled like “Wintery Forests” - according to the Glade aroma thing I had bought a couple of days ago. My car was usually full of nasty fast food boxes and left overs, as well weed residue but now that I had a reason to clean it, I had truly learnt to appreciate the cleanness.

I slammed my bags in my trunk and turned on the car, automatically plugging in my phone and loudly playing my favorite road trip music; no matter how excited I was about any trip, it was always better with the perfect playlist. I began to think about Sarah and how she might be preparing herself for today; she was going to be exposed to a new side of a life she never really thought she’d experience and although I was very excited to share this part of my life with her, I knew it had to be slightly worrying for her, but I just hoped she was equally happy to come as I was.

As I thought, in a matter of fifteen minutes I had pulled up at her house, gone up the stairs and rang the doorbell. From inside I heard Sarah yell “Just a second” and her quick steps on the wooden floors of her apartment quickly approaching the door.

“Hey,” she said as she opened the door. She was wearing a white tank with a sun and some French words written on them and a pair of ragged black shorts with some worn out black converse. Her hair was tied up in a bun and she had a red sweater tied around her hips

“Hey,” I said as I leaned up towards her and quickly kissed her lips softly; as I pulled away I saw the slight blush on her cheeks - it was adorable. “Are you ready for this?”

“Well, I hope I’m packed properly,” she said as she directed me into her living room where her matching suitcase and backpack waited, as well as her ‘small’ black purse; I couldn’t help but laugh. “What?” she said, slightly offended at my laughs. “I didn’t know what to pack and so I packed a lot of stuff, just in case.”

“I’m just glad we’re not taking the tour bus because there’s no way all of that would fit there,”

“I’m pretty good at tetris. Dare me to do it, and I will,” she was really feisty sometimes, and I really liked that.

“Well, good because we’re gonna have to fit all of this up in my car,” I whispered in her ear as I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her cheek softly.

“Let’s do this,”

I took her suitcase and hand luggage whilst she gathered the rest of her belongings and within a couple of minutes we were back at the car; Sarah played around with the suitcases and everything in the trunk for a couple of minutes, but she kept her word and managed to everything without needing much space from the back seats. I had to admit that I was impressed. She then climbed into the passenger seat and made herself comfortable.

“Las Vegas here we come!” I cheered as I roared the car to life and began our four hour drive.
