Tables Turned

Fuck his Money

Monday couldn't come quick enough for me. I spent the remainder of Sunday in Lynn's room crying, whining and bitching about Jake and how he completely broke my heart. When it hit 11pm I realized I had to leave Lynn alone and go to my own bed. The strange thing is though that I subconsciously walked towards Vic's door before my own. What the heck that was all about I will never know.

I walked to my Economics class with a wave of jealously shifting through me. A couple were crazily making out in the hallway; despite the initial feeling of wanting to throw the fuck up I did feel kinda bummed out about the fact that I am now very alone and heartbroken.

When I got into the lecture hall I found Ben near the back. His eyes lit up when he saw me and he waved me over; I didn't hesitate to climb the stairs to his side. “Hey Savannah, how did Saturday night go? I didn't see you much.” He smiled up at me. I sat down next to him with a solemn look on my face.

“A lot happened actually.” I said firmly with my lips pressed together tightly.

He gave me a small, concerned look. “Care to tell me?”

“Jake broke up with me.” I mumbled bitterly.

“Wait what? Why?” He gave me a confused look.

“Complicated reasons but yeah, it's over now.” I quickly dismissed it. I didn't wanna talk about it with him. In fact he didn't even know I had a boyfriend until he began talking to Jake at the party. I did feel bad for holding back information to Ben but it was a complicated situation and life can be a real dick sometimes.

“As long as you're okay Vannah.” He flashed me a really nice, genuine smile.

“Vannah?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I like giving people different nicknames. Everyone is calling you Sav so I'm gonna call you Vannah.” He said proudly as if he just invented some revolutionary item that was going to change the world.

“Benny, it's on.” I grinned at him. I actually felt happy for the first time since Saturday morning before Jake turned up at the apartment.

“Benny? Alright.” He shrugged and laughed. It made me smile to see him smile.

After a grueling lecture about American history we grabbed our stuff and scurried out of the hall and into the corridors.

“It's really funny actually, my dad always tried to get me to listen to that shit but I just couldn't stick it.” Ben blabbed on about Queen and how he just didn't get the craze for them.

I gazed down the hallway and noticed Vic standing with a book in his hand and a small smile on his face. He suddenly looked up and straight in my direction. A smile crept up onto his lips and annoyingly it made my face break out into a smile that took over my whole head. “I like Queen.” I announced looking away from Vic and back at Ben.

“I could have guessed that one. What about David Bowie?” He questioned. I looked back at Vic whom had closed his book over and was making his way towards us.

“I love Bowie actually. He changed music for the better and made it acceptable for people be open about sexuality and how fluid it can be.” I shrugged. Vic approached us with a small smile playing at his lips.

“Hey guys, what's up?” Vic asked looking between us. I gave Ben a concerned look and he just shrugged.

“Just on our way to lunch actually.” I said softly. Vic nodded and looked at the book in his hands.

“Me too actually, I'll walk you guys to it.” He grinned down at me and lead the way. I exchanged a look with Ben that was mixed with confusion and shock.

“How was Math?” I asked Vic, trying to make some conversation.

“Ah, the usual. I ain't too good with numbers. I'm better with words though.” He smirked ahead of him, at no one in particular.

When we got to the lunch hall I sat down next to Lynn, Vic and Ben sat across from us with strange looks on their faces. “What?” I asked shaking my head. They both began giggling and it confused me more.

“You've smudged your eyebrow and it's making you look as though you're in a constant state of shock.” Ben pointed out. I let out a groan and grabbed my bag from the ground beneath me and began rummaging through it looking for my mirror and make-up bag. I looked like a surprised clown.

“Great.” I groaned again and began to salvage my face. “Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with make-up because it always ends up looking like shit.” I mumbled to myself.

“I really like your make-up.” Lynn said with encouragement.

“Yeah it makes you look hot.” Vic grinned at me.

“So I only look good with make-up? Thanks guys.” I joked with them.

“We haven't seen you without any on so how could we know.” Lynn pointed out.

“Wait, so you don't leave your room in the morning without having put your make-up on?” Ben asked with genuine shock in his voice.

“Nope, even when she was crying her eyes out last night she somehow managed to keep that shit intact. That's some damn good waterproof mascara you got there.” Lynn nudged me, which made my arm slip and I drew a line with my eyebrow pencil up to my hairline. “Shit sorry.” She mumbled.

“Thanks guys, always got the support I need.” I rolled my eyes and wiped away the line.

“No problem babe.” Vic replied with a huge grin on his face. I guess the caring, nice Vic from yesterday completely disappeared the second I walked out of his bedroom. I flipped him off and then continued to do my make-up.

“Mike go away.” I heard as I walked into the apartment. My eyes lay upon Mike and Vic in the kitchen, looking extremely suspicious.

“Did I interrupt something?” I questioned with raised eyebrows.

“Nope.” Mike said bluntly and pushed past me and out of the apartment. I looked back at the closing door and then back at Vic whom stood in the kitchen with a placid look on his face.

“What was that all about?” I raised an eyebrow and walked over to the fridge. I opened it and got a bottle of water, opened it and took a long drink of it.

“Nothing, just my brother being a jerk as per usual.” Vic shrugged as if he didn't want to even talk to me.

“Mike is the jerk of the family? Coulda fooled me!” I joked around, waiting for him to laugh but he didn't. “Alrighty then.” I rolled my eyes and took a breath through my gritted teeth.

“Your humor is odd.” Vic shot at me with a completely straight face.

“What's up with you suddenly?” I rolled my eyes and sat down on the couch. Vic sat down on the floor in front of the TV but was facing me.

“Nothing why?” He raised a confused eyebrow.

“One minute you're calling me hot and babe then the next you're kinda insulting me and being biter.” I explained to him. I expected his facial features to tell me a little about what he was thinking or to even throw a reaction in there but nope, nothing. “Oh, whatever.”

I got up off the couch and walked to my room. “What so you like being called babe?” Vic asked as he followed me to my room.

“I didn't say that.” I snapped at him. I dumped my backpack on my bed and turned to face Vic. “All I'm saying is why are you so bi-polar about this friendship or whatever this is?”

“I'm not.” He scoffed and kicked his feet off the ground a little. “I'm just being smart about this.”

“About what? I don't even know what's happening here for you to be smart about.” I folded my arms across my chest and stared at him. Finally he looked up and gave me a weak smile.

 “Sorry.” He frowned.

“Vic why did you want me to stay in your room yesterday and don't give me a bullshit answer again.” I warned him.

“I told you I was lonely.” He shrugged his shoulders as if it was a totally normal answer to give.

“Why are you lonely though?” I asked.

“Wouldn't you be? I haven't had a steady relationship since I was 17 and that ended horrifically.” His outburst gave me a fright at first.

I sat down on the bed and patted next to me for him to come and sit down. “What happened that made it end so badly?” I asked cautiously.

“She cheated on me.” He said softly, looking straight at the floor. I didn't know what to say. I mean I can understand now why Vic is a little odd when it comes to girls and how he doesn't seem to hold down relationships, well as far as Lynn has told me.

“I don't wanna say the cliché thing and be all like, dude you're gonna find a girl, I swear.” I started. “Because you know you will and let's be honest here, it's kinda lame to be like that.” I laughed a little. He looked up at me with furrowed eyebrows. “But it's true, in the end you'll soon forget the colour of her eyes and she will be nothing but a distant memory to you. I may seem like a bimbo at times but I'm actually kinda smart Vic.”

“I don't think you're a bimbo at all. You take care of yourself but by no means at all does that take anything away from your intellectual side.” He said looking away. I stared at the side of his face and tried to work out what to say next but nothing came to mind. “I wanted you to stay because I've not had a girl stay in my bed for over 3 years now and not have sex with them. In the morning they're always gone and vice versa. It reminded me that I'm human and that I want to try be more human for once.” He mumbled.

“There's nothing wrong with being human, regardless of how bad it looks.” I put my hand on his shoulder and he looked at me. He stared into my eyes and and then looked down at my lips. I swear for a second it looked like he was going to kiss me.

“SAVANNAH!” Lynn's voice boomed through the apartment. I looked away and felt the sudden rush of blood to my face.

 “Yeah?” I shouted back.

“Ben totally has a crush on...” Lynn walked into my room and then stopped when she saw me and Vic sitting on my bed, pretty close. “Me.” She said quickly.

“Ben has a crush on you?” I asked and raised an eyebrow.

“Ugh yeah, Tony told me.” She said with a shady tone in her voice. Vic looked at me and gave me a sad smile.

“I'll leave you two to gossip.” He said softly and then left the room. Lynn walked over to my bed and took up the spot where Vic previously sat.

“Were you about to kiss?” She asked with her eyebrows almost at her hairline.

“No.” I answered quickly. She gave me a look that said she didn't believe me. “What's this about Ben?”

“He likes you.” She grinned a little.

“How do you know?” I began to interrogate her.

“I met him after my English class and we got to chatting about you. He was asking what happened with Jake and then said he was glad you two aren't together because he kinda wanted to ask you out.” Lynn practically squealed with excitement.

I should feel excited, happy and glad that Ben actually likes me but a part of me feels disappointed actually. I feel really disappointed that Lynn interrupted me and Vic, who knows what could have happened. And the not knowing is what gets me so fucked up.
