Tables Turned

In Too Deep

Walking into the ballroom made me feel a little sick. The lighting was low and the music was blaring, it was clear that the night was going to be over produced pop bullshit. Nevertheless though, we made our way down the stairs and into the middle of the floor. We were handed a flyer as we passed two students on the stairs. The flyer told us to find a seat, so we followed the instructions.

I couldn't even speak to Lynn, the music was too loud. I motioned for us to go and sit down and Lynn nodded and then followed me. We sat down at a table where there was other people at. They didn't even really notice our entrance.

After about 20 minutes my psychology professor stepped up to a podium where a mic had been stationed. "Hello, welcome to your Halloween masquerade ball. This event is special, very special actually. And if you're a student of mine it counts towards your grade, so take this seriously." He laughed. "Anyway, in 2 minutes you will all be asked to pick a partner. You have 1 minute to choose. If someone says no to you then find another, it's tricky but you gotta keep at it. Go to the person that speaks the most to you. Their mask, their outfit. You have to make this decision based off of their personalities that shine through their own creation." He explained with a hint of amusement in his voice.

He seemed too happy about the whole thing, it kinda made me wanna barf and run away. I looked around the room and nothing appealed to me. Until my eyes fell on someone with a mask very similar to mine. Black with white flicks on it, instead of glitter. The person was staring right at me too. It was a guy from what I could tell, he was wearing a suit with very tight black jeans. To be honest most guys were wearing that but still, he caught my eye more.

"Now go and pick your first dance partners. And then have fun, you're allowed to. Also remember to learn 3 facts about the person before revealing yourself." Jack said with a laugh and stepped down. Some cheesy music began playing and I felt my insides churn. Ugh here goes.

Someone walked up to Lynn and she just said yeah straight away. It's sad because she doesn't wanna come out of the closet yet, this whole thing is difficult. I guess she just wants to get it over with.

I watched her walk off into the dance floor. I looked back to where that guy was and my heart began to beat rapidly when I saw he was walking towards me. Once he approached me, he held his hand out for me. It was covered in a black glove. Interesting.

I put my hand in his and nodded, letting him lead me to the dance floor. He stopped us and placed one hand on my waist and the other in my hand. I placed my free hand on his shoulder and we began to slow dance. It didn't feel as awkward as it should have. After about 20 seconds he let go and grabbed the board around my neck.

1. I love pop punk.

I smiled down at that. I grabbed his and wrote down.

1. I love pop punk.

He grinned from ear to ear. That smile looked so familiar.

2. I am terrified of spiders.

I laughed a little at that one.

2. I'm petrified of spiders.

He grinned again.

3. I'm in love with someone and she doesn't even know it.

My heart sank a little. This guy was in love with a girl and obviously nothing came of it.

3. I can't tell the person I like them because it'll ruin our friendship.

He didn't smile at that one. I let go of his board and he did the same for me. We resumed our positions dancing until the song was over. I noticed Lynn was now next to me with whomever picked her.

The music stopped and I looked at her. The guy then leaned in to kiss her and she pushed him back from her. "No way dude I'm gay!" She shouted, the second she did though she realised that everyone could hear her.

The guy ripped his mask off and my heart sank a little when I realised it was Ben. Lynn turned and ran off out of the room. Realising that everyone heard what she said. Without hesitation though, I ran off after her leaving my mystery guy, unknown.

"Wait up!" I called out after Lynn. She didn't slow down though. She just ran to my car so I followed her there. She leaned against the roof and began sobbing into her arms.

"Why did this have to happen Sav?" She cried and sobbed.

"He didn't realise and he definitely doesn't know you're gay." I said hugging her from the side.

"I know but it's not fair." She cried. I tried to reassure her but I couldn't.

Luckily I knew something would ruin this night so I convinced Lynn to wear clothes under her dress. I peeled off the dress I was wearing and threw it in a nearby trash can. "Come on Lynn, we are not giving in tonight." I told her firmly.

She basically tore the dress off and threw it in the bin. "No one is gonna guess who I am are they?" She looked at me with swollen eyes.

"No."
