My Little Mona Lisa Told a Lie - Mike Fuentes

Three

I woke up earlier that morning. I set my alarm as quiet as possible last night in order to avoid waking up my grandparents. I snuck into the bathroom and turned the shower on. I undressed and stared at myself in the mirror. My eyes are too small and my nose is too big. My legs are short and stubby. I'm a whopping 5 feet and 2 inches. I poked at my stomach and shook my head in disgust before stepping into the shower and letting the hot water run over my body. I promised myself I would stop cutting when I moved to San Diego. So far I had kept that promise.

I got out of the shower and pulled on a pair of denim shorts and a gray v-neck tee shirt. I brushed my hair and applied a thin line of eyeliner to each eye. I was never quite satisfied with my appearance, but I didn't have time to fuss over it. I threw my backpack over my shoulder and headed down stairs. I froze as I heard a rustle from my grandparents bedroom.

"Don't miss the bus..." my grandfather called sleepily. I sighed in relief. I don't think they're getting up. I checked my phone. It was 7:30. I grabbed an apple for breakfast and sat down by the window, waiting for Mike and Vic. It hadn't quite sunk it that there were people on this planet that actually wanted to spend time with me. I felt so lucky to have met those boys. At exactly 7:45, I heard a car pull up in front of the house. I quickly got out of the house and into Vic's car before my grandparents could catch me.

"Hey, Ella!" Mike turned around from the passenger seat to greet me. "How did it go with your grandparents last night?"

I shook my head and sighed, "They're pissed. I can't go anywhere without them now. It's fucked up."

"We can get around that," Mike schemed. He tapped his fingers against the seat. I bit my lip. I didn't want to upset them more, but I wanted to keep hanging out with Mike, Vic, Tony, and Jaime so badly. I could tell them that I joined an after school club or something. I don't know...

Vic dropped us off in front of the school before continuing to the college campus. He says that he's staying close to home for the band, but I would hate to live at home while in college. I have yet to hear this band of theirs play, but I hope everything works out for them.

My second day of school was actually okay. It was great having Mike to keep me company. In Physics we sat in the back and joked around the entire time, which made the usually tedious class fly by. At lunch we met Tony and Jaime at the park. Vic was in class so he couldn't eat lunch with us, but he was behind the school at 2:30 sharp to pick up me and Mike.

"Drop me off here," I demanded as we approached my neighborhood.

"Why here? You'll still have to walk quite a bit," Vic explained as he continued to drive.

"Please...just in case," I persisted. If by any chance my grandparents caught me, they would probably ship me back to Mississippi.

Vic sighed, "Fine." He pulled over to the side of the street and I got out of the car.

"Do you want me to walk with you?" Mike asked.

"Nah, it's okay. Once again, if I'm caught with you, I'm dead. I want to play it safe."

"Oh, okay," Mike pouted then chuckled softly. I watched the boys drive off as I began to head towards my house. Vic was right. I could have been dropped off closer. It took me almost twenty minutes to get home. I walked into an empty house. I called for my grandmother and grandfather but there was no answer. I walked into the kitchen and noticed a note laying on the counter.

"Went furniature shopping. We'll be back around 9. Lasagne's in the fridge. Love you xo."

I smiled. I would have the house to myself for a few hours. I contemplated calling Mike and Vic, but they probably already have had enough of me. I ended up just starting my homework. Not an hour had passed until I heard my phone buzz.

Mike: Hey (: Grandparents home?

Ella: Nope. Not home until 9.

Mike: Excellent. See you soon.

I stared confused at his text message. Was I supposed to meet him somewhere? I'm sure I would find out soon enough.

Not much more than ten minutes later, I heard the front door open. Soon after, Mike appeared in my bedroom doorway.

"Watchya doing?" he asked, sitting down beside me.

"Homework."

"Fuck Ella, it's a Friday night!" Mike laughed.

"What else can I do?" I asked, putting my work down.

"Hang out with meeeee," Mike flashed me a big goofy grin.

"Well I guess I have no choice."

"That's the spirit. What do you wanna do?"

"Don't ask me. You're the one who came over here." I shoved his shoulder playfully.

"She makes a good point...well we could have crazy no-strings-attatched animalistic sex, or we could watch a movie," Mike shrugged then laughed whole-heartedly. I sat there confused for a moment and then laughed uncomfortably.

"Cabin in the Woods or Evil Dead?" I asked trying to break the tension and disregard what Mike had just said.

"Evil Dead. You into old horror movies?" Mike asked as he got up.

"Believe it or not, my grandfather is a big movie buff. Especially 70s-80s horror films." I explained as I led Mike down the stairs into our living room where our old TV sat in the corner. I popped the VHS tape into the player and sat down beside Mike. He moved closer to me and put his arm around my shoulders. I didn't know what to make of this, but I relaxed and tried not to over-think his actions that much. Not too long after the movie started, Mike began to lose interest. I'm sure he had seen this movie a thousand times like I have. He began to twirl a piece of my hair between his fingers.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Nothing. You just have pretty hair," he mumbled as he continued to twirl the piece of hair.

"Thanks, I guess," I laughed quietly. I was beginning to get kind of tired. It was only 6:30, but it had been a long week. I rested my head on Mike shoulder and allowed myself to drift into sleep.

Bad idea. I woke up still on Mike who staring at me intentively.

"Why didn't you wake me up?" I asked as I sat up.

"You look cute when you sleep," Mike smiled.

"You didn't get bored? What time is it?" I asked, searching around for my phone.

" Five to nine," Mike replied calmly.

"Fuck! They're supposed to be home in 5 minutes. You have to leave," I frantically hurried Mike towards the door.

"Come over to my house tomorrow at noon! All of the guys will be there!" Mike called out to me once he was outside.

"Alright!" I yelled and slammed the door. Almost instantly after, my grandparent's car pulled into the driveway. I hurried upstairs to my room to make it look like I was doing homework this entire time.

"Ella?" My grandmother called from downstairs.

"Yeah?"

"Ella, come down here. You never touched my lasagne. At least have a little bit."

I sighed and went downstairs. She was always so fussy.

"Funny," my grandfather started, "I thought I saw something moving across our front lawn as we pulled in."

"Probably an animal or something," I nervously picked at the plate of food that had been put in front of me.

"Hmmm..." he nodded. My grandmother gave me a concered look. I just tried to focus on my plate.

"Well let's not worry about it unless we see it again," he spoke very clearly as if he were lecturing me, "We don't want any vermin around this house."
