My Little Mona Lisa Told a Lie - Mike Fuentes

Two

Block three was advanced calculus. I have always been kind of a math nerd. It was just another thing for people to make fun of me for back in Mississippi. The class was boring (mostly because Mike wasn't there) but easy enough that I didn't have to pay too much attention. I could let my mind wander without missing anything important. I was really excited for Physics because I would get to see Mike again. He's the first friend I've had since I lost my parents. I never kept in touch with my friends from elementary school.

Class finally ended. I met up with Mike at our lockers.

"Hi," I greeted him with a small smile before beginning organizing my things.

"So are you coming with me after school to meet the guys?" He took me by surprise. I didn't think that I was ready to meet more new people.

"I don't know...my grandmother will be pissed if she finds out I'm hanging out with a bunch of boys."

Mike responded with a laugh, "Come on. You gotta let loose and rebel a little bit."

"Trust me. Just being me is enough of a rebellion in their eyes," I looked at Mike and grinned, "I'll come, but you'll have to help me think of some awesome excuse to tell my grandmother."

"Sounds like a plan." We turned away from our lockers and began to head to Physics. Mike casually draped his arm over my shoulder. The girl from before shot me glance. I laughed to myself.

"What's so funny?" Mike asked.

"Oh nothing..."

--

After last block I met Mike in front of the school. He lead me to an old car that was parked by the the fence separating the school's parking lot and a 7-11. I guy sat in the drivers seat. This must be Vic. He looked a lot smaller than Mike. His hair was lighter too. It was long and on top was a backwards San Diego Padres hat. He smiled as Mike and I approached.

"Who's this?" Vic asked and smiled mischievously. I scratched the back of my neck nervously.

"This is Ella. She's gonna join us. You don't mind?"

"Of course not. Hi, Ella." Vic motioned for us to get in the car. I slid into the backseat and Mike crawled in beside me. "Gonna leave me all alone up here?" Vic laughed. Mike shrugged and smiled. I looked out window, not sure what to say.

"Ella just moved here from Mississippi," Mike said trying to initiate conversation.

"Yeah, we got here about a week ago. I like it here," I continued.

"Not homesick yet?" Vic asked.

"Not in the slightest. I didn't belong in Mississippi," I responded. I drummed my fingers against the arm rest. I was starting to relax. About ten minutes later we arrived at a house.

"Welcome to el casa de Fuentes," Mike said as we pulled into the driveway. I realized how close I lived to them.

"I live right on the street over there," I said pointing to a street a few houses down on the other side of the road.

"Damn. In that case I expect to be seeing a lot of you," Mike playfully nudged me. We walked down to their basement. I have to say, this was the coolest room I had ever seen. Instrument lay strung about on worn couches that faced an old TV. Mike's drum set sat in the corning. The walls were completely covered with posters of awesome bands.

"We've been working on this place for a while now. It's where our band practices," Vic explains as he pulled a few cans out of a cooler. "Beer?"

"Sure..." I hesitantly took the can from Vic's hand. We sat down on one of the couches and opened our cans. It tasted bitter, but I got used to it. "So where do you go to college, Vic?" I asked him trying to make conversation.

"San Diego State. I commute," Vic replied, taking a long sip from his beer. I heard the front door slam and footstep begin to thunder down the stairs. Two guys emerged. One continued to run and jumped on the couch beside Vic. The other calmly walked over and took a seat.

"This is Jaime," Mike introduced motioning to the hyper one. Jaime smiled and waved enthusiastically, bouncing up and down in his seat. He seemed very friendly. His hair was something else. It flew in all different directions and had a small patch of bleach blonde in the front. "And this Tony." Tony had more tattoos than Mike and his ears stretched. He was obviously more reserved than Jaime. He gave me a small wave.

"Beer me!" Jaime yelled as Tony dug through the cooler. "Mix it with red bull while you're at it!"

"I don't think he needs that..." I laughed. Jaime shot me a sassy look.

"I like her," Tony smiled as he tossed Jaime his drink.

"Yeah, but can she handle the Hime-Time," Jaime raised his eyebrows up and down at me several times. I laughed.

"We've put up with him for years. Trust me, it get's easier," Mike joked putting a hand on my shoulder. We all laughed. We talked for a little while longer. They boys explained to me all about their band and how they planned on "making it big" one day. I really wanted to hear them play. I told them my story and how much I hated my old town. They seemed like genuinely nice guys.

It was getting late. I dug my cell phone out of my pocket. Shit. I had five missed calls all from my grandparents. I sighed heavily.

"I gotta get home. I'll see you later guys." Mike followed me out the door.

"Do you need a ride? Or someone to walk with you?" he offered.

"I think it's better if you dont," I shook my head. My grandparents are going to kill me.

"I'll see you tomorrow right?" Mike asked hopefully.

"Of course," I smiled and Mike pulled me into hug. It caught me off guard, but it was nice. I was happy have him as friend. I broke the hug and waved goodbye before taking off towards my house. It was about a ten minute walk. I slowly creaked the front door open. My grandmother was standing in the doorway between the hall and the kitched. Her arms were crossed. She looked furious.

"Where were you?" she whispered. Her eyes narrowed to slits. Her voice sent shivers up my spine.

"Library," I blurted out nervously.

"Then why didn't you answer your phone? Why were you there so late?" she raised her voice.

"Sorry...I was just really concentrated," I lied.

"Lies. It's the first day of school. I doubt you even have anything to study!" By now she was yelling. "From now on you come straight home from school. You can't go anywhere without one of us dropping you off!" I saw my grandfather watching angrily from the kitchen table.

"Grandma, I'm seventeen years old..."

"And you're obviously not responsible enough to be trusted on your own. We thought you had been kidnapped!" My grandfather hissed, slamming his fist down on the table.

"Sorry..." I grumbled before heading upstairs to my room. There were still boxes laying around. I was too lazy to unpack. I fell back onto my bed. I had a text from an unknown number.

It's Vic. We're driving you to school tomorrow. Be ready at 7:45 :)

I smiled, but my happiness didn't last. My grandparents would never allow me to be driven to school by two strange boys. I'd have to hope that they wouldn't be awake when I left. Ugh I wish they would just lay off me for a second. I got up and changed into some sweats. I crawled into bed before responding to Vic.

Great. I'll be ready.
