All My Heart

Let's Toast Coz Things Got Better

Sophie’s POV

The doorbell rang, pulling our little group out of our mindless chatting.

Mike removed himself from behind me, and walked over to the front door, before speaking a little into the intercom, and buzzing up whoever it was. I pulled myself up from the couch, and walked over to greet our visitors.

As soon as the door was pulled open, Jaime and Tony, the other two members of Mike and Vic’s band were revealed; accompanied by Steph and Jess. Jaime was the first to enter, throwing his arms around me and squeezing me into his chest. Despite popular belief, Jaime gives the best god damn hugs on this planet. He eventually let me go, and I walked over to hug Tony, saying a quick hello. Jess and Steph rolled their eyes and moved to greet the others.

We all heard a sudden squeal, and I turned around to see that Jaime had thrown Annie over his shoulder, and was holding her ransom until Vic gave in and granted him a hug. It was pretty funny to watch, especially as we could all see how red Annie’s face was getting after being hung upside down. Vic eventually sighed and pulled Jaime into a hug, consequently getting his wife’s arse straight in his face, which caused us to cry with laughter.

As Jaime eventually put Annie back down on the ground, we all had tears rolling down our faces and her face was very red. She immediately sat down on the couch in an attempt to recover her balance and probably some dignity, although she too was laughing. She gave Jaime a playful smack, but smirked to show she held no hard feelings. Vic went over and attempted to wrap his arm around her, but she pushed him away jokingly, shouting “You shoulda just hugged the jerk!” causing us all to crack up once again.

Mike left the room and came back with various bottles of alcohol, but I decided it would be classy to start with wine, knowing that I’d get onto the stronger stuff later. I hated it and Mike knew this, so gave me a small smirk. I poured Annie and myself a glass, and went and sat down beside her on the couch, handing her the glass.

“Aww don’t cry Soph, my arse isn’t that ugly,” she mocked my tear stained face, placing her wine down on the coffee table in front of us. Vic got up and got himself a bottle of beer, before sitting on the floor next to Jaime.

“I dunno, it was quite the sight for sore eyes, and Vic got quite the face full.” I replied, in the same mocking tone.

“Meh, he’s seen it all before,” she laughed, at which point Vic had just taken a sip of his beer, before he spluttered it everywhere, pretty much all over Jaime. I rolled my eyes at the lack of filter my best friend had for comments like this, as this was definitely not the first time she’d said something along those lines. Usually it was just me or Mike in the room though. Tony’s eyes widened, but he made no comment, while Jaime just sat there with a massive smirk on his face; I knew he was NOT going to let this go.

However, before he could take the comment way further than it was meant to go, consequently making every single person in the room ten times more uncomfortable than they already were, Mike came in from the kitchen announcing that dinner was ready. Vic heaved a sigh of relief, knowing he’d narrowly escaped a situation no-one would want to be in.

We all made our way to the big table set up at the end of the lounge as Vic made his way into the kitchen to help Mike carry in all the food. As they brought out the turkey, the veg, and something that looked vaguely suitable for my veggie best friend and Tony, we all gasped at the sight of it, because yet again Mike had excelled himself in terms of cooking up an awesome and mouth watering meal.

Me and Annie often said that we hit the jack pot with the Fuentes brothers, not only were they amazing people, caring, talented, good looking, but they also cooked up a fucking good meal, often without all that much effort. For me, it didn’t matter if Mike could cook or not, I was pretty good at that stuff as well, but it was a god send that Vic could cook, because about the only thing Annie could cook was a grilled cheese sandwich or toast, although she could bake pretty well. She just couldn’t deal with the stress of it, normally ending up burning things. When we lived together, I attempted to teach her. I failed miserably, and refused to teach her ever again. I know that Vic’s attempts were also futile, but he gave up pretty quickly when they got into a pretty heated argument over which knife to use or something, ending up with him in hospital with stitches after he got stabbed with the knife, completely by accident, but we all decided it was for the best if he just cooked from now on.

As the boys began serving up the meal, Jaime was practically slobbering all over the table, and Annie and Tony were cutting up what looked like a nut roast or something. Before too long, our plates were piled high, and we tucked in, mouths watering everywhere.

Careless chatter filled the table as I began having a conversation with Vic, who was on my right. He was telling me how he’d written a new song for Annie, and he couldn’t wait to show it to her.

Conversation then turned to the bar that I owned, and how business was.

That’s how we met the Fuentes brothers, at the pub I worked at back in England. The first time it was just Mike. The way he talked about San Diego made me fall in love. It started as a joke, move there and open my own bar, but I soon realised something; what did I have to lose? Why not go?

Convincing Annie to come was the hard part, but then one day about a year later, Mike was back. I was working my usual shift, and Annie was sitting by the bar chatting to me. As I went off to serve other customers, I turned back around and Vic was chatting up Annie.

Immediately I knew that they were going to have a good thing going. That’s the thing with me, I can tell a good relationship from a mile off, and they both had instant chemistry. Eventually they became more than just good friends, despite the fact that he was based in San Diego. After that, convincing her to leave with me was a piece of cake. Mike and I had kept in touch, mostly through email. I really liked him for ages, but he had a girlfriend, so I kept away.

Vic and Annie decided to take things to the next stage, and she got herself a job teaching music at a high school in San Diego. Just a week before she was due to leave, I also found a bar that needed staff over there, so I packed up my shit and moved out there with them. Annie and I lived together for a while, before she moved out to live with Vic.

I was spending more and more time with Mike over the months, and he broke up with his girlfriend not long after I arrived in the states. He was the one who convinced me to buy the bar after it was put up for sale, and he helped me start it up, lending me the money I needed for the deposit. I owed a lot to that man, but I also owed a lot to Vic, if he hadn’t have attempted to flirt with Annie (something she oddly found charming); I would probably still be working that shitty little pub in England.

Both of us owed a lot to the Fuentes brothers.
