All My Heart

Feliz Navidad

Annie’s POV

It was 3pm on Christmas Eve when we eventually pulled up to the towering apartment building, and I looked up to see my best friend, Sophie, waving down at us. I threw back a quick wave and clambered out of the car.

My husband, Vic, slipped his arm around my waist as we made our way to the door, waiting for Sophie to buzz us up.

“Who is it?” she sang, mockingly, down the intercom. I rolled my eyes. Childish as ever, how Mike put up with her was beyond me. I’d lived with her for years, and as much as I loved her, she drove me up the wall.

“Your worst nightmare doofus,” I replied in the same mocking tone.

The door buzzed open, and Vic led me up the stairs to the familiar apartment building. It was modern, more like a loft. Steel supports, red brick walls, decorated with old vinyls, and an old jukebox sitting in the corner.

Sophie flung herself at me and threw her arms around my neck, before quickly removing them to throw them around Vic’s. I chuckled to myself as I wandered into her apartment, glancing around at the familiar surroundings. She’d set up a fairly large Christmas tree in the corner of the lounge, which had baubles and stuff hanging from its branches. It looked quite nice if I was honest; cozy. Sophie got really into Christmas, and as much as I didn’t expect Mike to get into it, he did for her.

I heard greetings taking place in the kitchen, so I made my way there and noticed Vic was stood there embracing his lanky brother, who at the minute was cooking something that looked fucking fantastic. I couldn’t tell you for the life of me what it was though; I couldn’t cook if my life depended on it. I was eternally grateful that the Fuentes brothers were fucking awesome cooks. It had never surprised me that Vic could cook; he seemed like the type of kid that would help his mum in the kitchen, but when I found out Mike could cook, I had burst out laughing. Mike was a ‘thug’, not a cook! I guess they do say, never judge a book by its cover.

“Hey Mike,” I greeted my brother-in-law.

“Annie!” he exclaimed, immediately pulling me into a bone crushing hug. I’d only seen this kid about a week ago, but by the way he was hugging me it was like it had been years.

“I’ve missed you too Mike,” I chuckled.

He assured me that he was making something vegetarian as well as the meaty thing in the oven, reminding me that I wasn’t the only veggie at our little Christmas party, Tony was coming as well.

“Wassup Soph?” I greeted her, as I made my way into the lounge, and sitting down opposite her on the floor.

“Home Alone or The Nightmare Before Christmas?”

“Neither,” I laughed, “Elf all the way baby.”

Vic chose that moment to come in, and when he heard my comment he groaned, and sat down next to me.

“Please can we not watch Elf again?!”

“Thank you!” Soph exclaimed, “Finally someone else who sees how shit that film is!”

I pouted and scowled at my best friend and husband as they high fived each other. Some women might get jealous of how well they got along at times, but I was eternally grateful. I knew there was nothing more to it, they viewed each other as siblings and squabbled like them too.

Elf was my favourite Christmas film, and for some reason Vic didn’t agree with me. I’d already seen it about 10 times this month, because, well, it was the run up to Christmas. Vic and I had been together for four years, and this was our second Christmas together. That was long enough for him to hate the film.

I pecked Vic on the lips, before saying “you love it really” and stuck my tongue out at him. Sophie grinned at our little interaction, as she always fan girled over our relationship when we were around.

He pouted back at me but made no comment, deciding to let it go for now. I leaned into his side, smiling up at Mike as he made his way out from the kitchen to join us. He wrapped his arms around Sophie and she melted quickly into him, as he kissed the top of his head; if me and Vic looked like that when we are together, I could totally get why she fan girled over us. It was cute.

We sat there talking about meaningless shit that had happened in the past week since we’d last seen them. Vic and I had been back to the UK, to visit my family in Wales, much to his distress and sometimes amusement.

I mean my family loved Vic to pieces, and vice versa, but the elderly members of my family didn’t really get him. Every single one of my great uncles had asked why he hadn’t gotten a haircut, and every single person over the age of 25 (which was everyone other than me, my siblings and my cousins) wanted to know exactly what ‘mexicore’ was.

It was also kinda awkward playing his music to my elderly grandmother, who at 89, didn’t understand why he was “screaming in pain” in his songs.

They just didn’t get it, I suppose, but they still adored Vic, because how could you not? He was charming, funny, and good to me and just an all round awesome person. I think my dad and uncles were secretly relieved that he didn’t have any tattoos or drastic piercings (my dad having finally accepted the nose ring, after months of me telling him it was there t stay, and that it didn’t affect Vic as a person.) I think though they were secretly happy that I was with Vic instead of Mike. When my dad met Mike for the first time I think he almost cried with happiness, because Mike didn’t look like any father’s ideal son-in-law, especially for my stuck up family.

Overall it had been a successful trip, and Mike and Soph laughed at the stories. I knew they were planning on going over for the New Year, and I also knew that Soph was unbelievably to see her family, especially her nieces and nephews.

We both missed the UK, it would always be our home no matter what, but San Diego would always come a close second.

We were happy in that moment, because we had our boys, and our little family would be spending Christmas together, joined by Steph and Tony, and Jaime and Jess. It was going to be our first ‘family’ Christmas; we were all beyond excited now.

I smiled to myself; I was definitely content in the arms of my husband, spending Christmas with my best friends.

We were very happy.
