I Just Want To Fade Away Into The Sky Under The Sea

Two

I closed my room door behind me, strolled over to the windows and leant against my windowsill.

I was thankful that the room I was designated was facing the beach, it meant the moonlight shone into it through the windows. It filled my room will a subtle blue glow, it calmed me a little.

I could easily fall asleep and wake up to this, everyday, for the rest of my life.

I opened my windows slightly, allowing the breeze to roll in.

I rested on the edge of my bed, carefully listening to the crashing of the waves. I slid my shorts off and pulled my body onto the bed fully and watched the white curtains sway as the breeze picked up and slowed back down.

I can understand why my parents thought this was special.

I buried my face onto the cold pillow and drifted away.

“Sin.” I heard a familiar voice which brought me from my sleep.

“Huh?”

“Sin, wake up. Breakfast’s read- Is that my old Cardinals jersey you’re wearing?” I focused my eyes on the blur in front of me.

“Finn...” I groaned into my pillow. “Go...Go away and leave me to sleep.” I tried rolling over to face the wall but he threw one of the spare pillows at me.

“C’mon, your food will get cold.” His unambiguous voice faded away.
I rolled over and looked up at the alarm clock on the bedside desk that was behind me.

“9:25?!” I thought out loud. I instantly regretted not going to bed straight away last night. I rolled off the end of my bed sluggishly and slid on my pyjama shorts again.

I eventually made my way down the oak staircase and greeted my Mom in the kitchen.

The scent of coffee surrounded the air as I kissed my fathers cheek and sat next to him at the large table.

My Mom placed my breakfast in front of me. Toast. Just... toast.

“Toast?” I snorted under my breath as I took a bite. My Dad chuckled next to me in some form of agreement. Talk about fasting. On the other hand there was Finn, (He had finally decided to put some clothes on) who sat down at the table opposite me with around three full slices of toast.

Day in, day out, I try to analyse what species that boy is but I can never seem to figure it out. I watched him closely as he gnawed at the slice of toast in his hand.

“Mom wants us to go to the grocery store.” He mumbled as he chewed on yet another bite of the toast.

I nodded. Why not? I’ve only visited the beach. I silently left the table and carefully placed my dishes into the sink.

I skipped up the stairs and changed into some shorts, but I kept the jersey on because it was comfy and plus, I didn’t really need to wear anything revealing, I mean, c’mon, I’m from Arizona, I’m bound to have a tan already. I pulled my hair into a bun and applied some make-up. I decided to shower when I return home; it would be a lot more logical. I threw most unnecessary items into my bag and made my way down the stairs again. My parents had obviously gone to sit outside by the pool, lucky for some.

I made my way into the kitchen and found a folded piece of paper with about fifty bucks inside it:
“Salad - Tomato’s, Lettuce, Cucumber ect.
Milk x2 and Cheese,
Water (Bottled),
Fruit Loops,
Coffee, tea and sugar,
Soda, beer (any, your father said he doesn’t mind)
P.s get something for yourself, love”

I smiled and began to put my shoes on. Finn wandered into the kitchen area and then put his Toms on. He’s been unusually quiet recently. We made our way outside into the boiling heat, I looked up from the note my Mom wrote and saw a black car pull up to the house next door.

I pulled my sunglasses down from my hair and onto my face so I didn’t have to force eye contact. A tall guy with, might I say gorgeous tattoos, stepped out of the driver’s seat. He nodded and slammed the door shut. Another guy stepped out of the car with a crate of beer. He was so small!

“Don’t slam the fucking door, hermano!” The small guy shouted at the taller one. I could vaguely hear some sort of Spanish behind us being shouted back at him. Well, someone seems pissed. We just continued walking away but...

“Hey, you’re staying next door to us aren’t you?”

I turned and nodded. He had shoulder length hair and he was wearing a Snapback with a vest where the sleeves have clearly been ripped off.

“Yeah why?” Finn interrupted me before I was about to even speak. I elbowed his stomach for him to shut up.

“Yeah, we arrived last night, I’m Sinead.” I said to the small guy, I held my hand out and he shook it with his free one. “And this is my brother, Finley-”

“Finn... Just Finn.” My tall brother corrected me quickly. He nodded at Finn. Finn quietly pulled a cigarette packet from his shorts and placed one in his mouth.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Victor, call me Vic though!” He smiled; his eyes were squinted because he was facing the sun, so I was unable to see his face fully. His eyes travelled down to my shirt and he pointed at my jersey. “Cardinals? Arizona, huh?” I nodded. He looked back up at me. “Have you been to Cali before?”

“Nope, who needs this weather when your home is basically on the edge of the equator?” I snorted.

He laughed at little. “Ok, well, I’ll see you around, Sinead.” He winked and continued making his way back to the house.

“What a tool.” Finn retorted under his breath.

“He seems nice.”

He just ignored me and lit up the cigarette that was hanging out of his mouth. Another thing you’ll learn about Finley is that he is stubborn. He smokes... But then he smokes even more when he finds out he’s suffering from cancer. He denied chemotherapy, if you were wondering. I do have sympathy for him, but when he’s acting like this I just don’t know what to think. This almost tore the entire family apart.

I pinned it at the back of my thoughts and concentrated on the vacation and how we’re going to find this grocery store.

After two and a half hours in the town centre we were on our way back. Personally, I think two bottles of Sangria was perfectly fine for tonight. Well, I think that’s what Mom meant by ‘Get something for yourself.’

We were walking aimlessly around the town centre before either of us spoke.

“We should’ve brought the car.” Finn groaned behind me. He paused for a moment. “Can we call a cab?” He suggested.

“Ok...” I sighed. He pulled his cell out and called a cab.

We sat on a random bench in complete silence for at least ten minutes before a cab pulled up. It was lunchtime and the sun was directly in the middle of the sky so it was blistering.

We loaded our shopping into the backseat of the cab and I sat awkwardly in the passenger seat talking to the Latino driver. I think I watched too many films where the taxi driver kills the innocent teenage girl. Except I’m not a teenager.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

Have you noticed he looks nothing like his ID card? I think we should make a break for it...

I looked at Finn from the mirror and shook my head. He’s always trying to creep me out. He’s so immature. But we’re at the same level of maturity as boys mature two years later than girls... This, kind of does make us seem like twins.

Oh, ha ha. You’re hilarious. I guess the level of hilariousness runs in the gene, eh? I replied.

I know, Sin. And it does...P.S if there’s any funny business your big, strong, macho brother will be here to save you!

I looked back at him through the mirror with a cocked eyebrow and looked back at my phone and began typing.

Sarcasm...? I responded quickly.

I looked at him again through the mirror but this time he just flicked me off. The scenery from outside of the car window became more recognizable as we pulled into the cul-de-sac. I handed him the money and thanked him, grabbed a few bags from the back seat and made my way back to the house.

I shouted my parents and left the shopping on the dining table and made my way to the bathroom.

I stepped out of the shower and dried myself off making sure that, one – I wasn’t going to slip and almost kill myself during the risky travel from the bathroom to my bedroom, and two – I wouldn’t get water everywhere if I did.

I pulled a smaller towel and ravelled it around my head, creating one of those towel turbans. I sat down at my dresser but my concentration altered from my mirror to someone singing outside.

“She sits up high, surrounded by the sun, one million branches and she loves everyone. Mom and Dad, did you search for me? I’ve been up here so long I’m going crazy...”

At this point the sun was beginning to set so it was shining through the window, I carefully walked over to the window to have a closer listen.

“The sun went down, we ended up on the ground, I heard the train shake the windows you screamed over the sound...”

I couldn’t see who was singing, I heard the strumming of a guitar and then he spoke.
“No- Tony, for Christ sake, that won’t work.” He laughed. “I was thinking... This... Maybe?” He played a delicate tune on his guitar.

I leaned farther out of the window. His voice was... beautiful. And I just wanted to hear more. The small one, the one who I met earlier looked up and waved at me. Vic? That's his name, right?

I smiled back at him. He beckoned me.

I shook my head. Why did I shake my head?

He poked his bottom lip out. I rolled my eyes.

Please. He mimed.

I smiled and nodded.
