I'll be the Brightest, You'll See

Wastelands

"I want to speak to Dr Collins." I said bluntly. The nurse in front of me looked between Vic and me.

"Do you have an appointment?" She asked raising her badly drawn eyebrow.

"No but tell her that Scarlett Jones is here." I kept my face as straight as possible. Being stuck in here taught me one thing, don't let your guard down for a second.

"I can't let you in without an appointment." She said obnoxiously.

"If you don't get her, I'll just walk on through there myself. I know where her office is." I warned her. She sighed and picked up her phone.

"Dr Collins, I have Scarlett Jones here with me and she needs to speak to you." She said softly down the phone. "Okay, thank you." She put the phone down and looked at me. "Go right up." She said bitterly.

I walked around her desk with Vic in tow, the route to her office was imprinted into my brain. I had to make that journey 3 times a week for 5 solid years. I got to the door and knocked on it. "Come in." I heard her call. I opened the door and walked in, Vic closed the door behind us. "Scarlett, what can I do for you?" She asked politely.

"I need to ask a few questions actually." I stated as I sat down on the familiar couch. Vic looked around, bewildered by the environment we were in. It was unlike him to be so quiet but I guess he just isn't used to any place like this.

"Okay, and who is this?" She asked, looking at Vic. The mention of his name made him look at her.

"I'm Vic." He said softly. Her eyes widened and she looked at me.

"Do you wanna explain?" She asked. I rolled my eyes and looked away.

"When I got home Vic was still at her parents house. Do you honestly expect me and him not to talk?" I frowned. Her features softened.

"No, I don't. I'd actually find it more weird if you didn't talk. I just wonder if it's good for you is all." She mumbled and wrote something in her book.

"Look I'm not here for a therapy session. I'm here to speak about something really specific." I told her.

"And what is that?" She asked, staring at me.

"My child." I said quietly, not breaking eye contact. This got her flustered.

"Scarlett you know I can't discuss that with you at all." She quickly got up and walked over to her desk. Clearly trying to avoid the conversation.

"Well you have to." I demanded, standing up and walking over to her.

"I don't." She said trying to sound like she was in control. It made me laugh, a lot.

"3 weeks ago I would've believed that but now I'm free from this place, I have one thing on my side." I said smugly to her.

"What is that?" She asked, shaking her head.

"The Internet." I smiled.

"And how is that any help to you? You have no information on this child." She furrowed her eyebrows.

"That you're right about but that's not what I used to web for." I smirked. "You see, the Internet is a really good place to find out laws and rules in general. So I decided to look into adoption laws. Turns out what you guys done to me was against the law." I told her, my face completely straight.

"No it wasn't, it's within our rights t-" I cut her off.

"No, it's not. You had no right to force me into adoption." I told her. "My previous therapist blackmailed me and manipulated me, making sure that I stayed in this place even though I was legally allowed to leave. He made sure I couldn't even though I was perfectly capable to." I explained. "He forged letters and documents saying that I had to stay in here, and you of all people should know that. At the time people weren't aware of it but after the trial took place it all came out." I said.

"What are you getting at?" She asked.

"You guys kept me in here when I was perfectly in my own rights to leave, made me give up my child for adoption and didn't even get my permission to do so. I didn't sign any papers!" I was getting angry now.

"Your mother did." She stated.

"By law, my mother wasn't in the position to make that choice." I shook my head.

"What do you want Scarlett?" She asked, folding her arms across her chest.

"What I want is the name of the person whom adopted my child." I said bluntly.

"You know I can't do that." She frowned at me.

"I'll just have to press charges then." I shrugged with a smile on my face. I walked over to Vic and he stood up.

"You'll never win that case, our lawyers are trained to deal with this stuff every day, they'd bleed you dry of every penny you have." She said smugly.

"When I got out of here I found out that my grandparents died, leaving me 5.3 billion dollars to my name. I'll see you in court." I smiled at her and turned away, we began walking out of the room.

"Wait..." She called out after us. We both turned around and looked at her. She walked over to her desk, opened a file and looked through it. She stopped at a page and then placed it down on her desk open. "I'm going to leave the room now, when I come back you two better be gone and I hope I never have to see you again Scarlett." She said softly. She walked past us and out of the room.

I looked at Vic and he stared back at me. "Go look then." He nodded towards the desk.

I slowly walked over to the desk and looked at the file. My heart sank when I saw what was on it. There were two pictures. One of my daughter when she was first born. The other was of a toddler, which I assume is my daughter now. My hand flew over my mouth and I held back tears. "Vic." I sobbed out. He looked at me funny and then walked over to me.

He looked down at the images and his face softened, a small smile played on his lips as he reached out and ran his finger tips down the images. "Is this her?" He asked, looking at me with his eyes full of hope. I couldn't speak so I just nodded. "She looks like you." He said softly.

"She looks like you." I half laughed half sobbed.

"We are gonna get her okay?" He tried to reassure me. I nodded and then picked up the file, stuffing it into my backpack and then leaving the office.

We strolled through the hospital, a small smile planted on both of our faces, it was a small victory but it was one we needed.

-

"So you just blackmailed her into giving you the file?" Jaime asked, shock all over his face.

"Well I've been blackmailed by these people for far too long, it's not gonna continue." I said smugly.

"Good on you, you deserve to find her." Tony smiled at me.

"Thanks Tony, I hope we do find her." I said softly, feeling content.

Vic walked into the living room and sat down on the couch next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.

It's hard to really say what we are, I haven't really thought about the definition of what's going on between me and Vic. We've been sharing kisses every now and again, holding hands and cuddling but there has been no talk of relationships or defining it. There's been nothing solid.

I looked at him as he told some story, the passion oozes from him when he talks about things he loves. His eyes lit up when he smiled, and when he smiles nothing shines as bright. I'm never going to get over the look on his face when he smiles. I will never get tired of this boy.

"Are you okay?" He asked, a smile on his face. I looked into his eyes and smiled.

"Perfect." I choked out, he blushed a little and then jumped back into the conversation. And I went back to staring into his soul, taking in every inch of his face. The way he half smiles when listening to someone else's input or the way his eyebrows bounce up and down when he talks about something funny. He also makes the goofiest faces and voices when he imitates someone, I can't help but fall in love every time he speaks.

I leaned in and rested my head on his shoulder, his arm around my shoulder fell to my waist and pulled me in closer to him. "You're perfect." He mumbled, laying his head upon mines. In this moment I didn't want it to ever end, within definition of what we are; I know he loves me and that's all that matters.

"Vic?" I asked, looking up to him. He looked down at me with a smile on his face.

"Yeah?" He asked.

"I love you okay." I whispered so that no one else heard me. His eyes lit up at the words, something that never ceases to amaze me.

"I love you too Scarlett." He said quietly and kissed the top of my head. It's funny because I always wanted to get back to this, to him and I never thought it would happen. I'll never stop being grateful. After all this time, he still loves me.

Flashback

"You're dangerous and beautiful, you know that?" He snarled at me, it hurt that he could see me as dangerous.

"What do you mean?" I frowned.

"I can't stay away from you no matter how hard I try to." He sighed, rubbing his temples with his hands.

"Maybe that's a good thing?" I asked hopeful.

"It is and it isn't." He said, looking up from his hands.

"Then what's the problem?" I frowned.

"I love everything about you but it's so dramatic and it's difficult." He groaned.

"It was never gonna be simple, you know that." I shook my head. He stood up and walked over to me.

"You're perfect in every way but it's killing me." He grabbed my shoulders and looked into my eyes.

"I'll never be perfect because I'll never be you." I mumbled, staring at him. His features softened.

"Scarlett please get help." He begged, I could look at him.

"No I don't need it." I mumbled.

He grabbed my face and forced me to look at him. "You're cutting again, you need to go back to the therapist." Vic said softly.

"I don't want to." I frowned.

"Please." He pleaded, his eyes were filled with so much worry and that broke me.

"Fine." I mumbled. He didn't hesitate to kiss me and boy was it one of the best kisses I've ever had in my life. "I love you so much Vic Fuentes." I mumbled against his lips.

He picked me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist, he walked over to my bed and threw me down onto it then crawled on top of me. "I love you so much too, Scarlett Jones." He whispered as he kissed down my neck and to my collarbone. Vic never failed to make me feel loved, never.
