You'd Better Hide the Bullets

I Need a Miracle

I lay upon the hood of Vic's car with him, our hands were intertwined and our bodies were touch slightly as we lay side by side. The early evening sky was presented in front of us. "So you're playing this Warped Tour in San Diego? I'm so proud of you." I couldn't keep the smile off my face.

"Well, probably not now." He said softly, the words broke my heart.

"Why not now?" I frowned, turning my head to look at him. He looked at me and his smile faded.

"Keeping you safe and away from your parents is my number one priority right now." He mumbled. I couldn't help but smile at how romantic he was being but still, I didn't want him to ruin his chance at his dream because of me.

"I feel so bad that the guys had to drop out of the battle of the bands but I'm glad that you won it." I told him, rubbing my thumb in circles on his hand.

"I just wish you had of been there." He looked so sad at the fact I wasn't there.

"It's okay, I'll be there when you play Warped." I said softly and kissed him on the cheek.

My phone began buzzing in my pocket. "It's begun." Vic smirked at me. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and saw it was my mom calling. "Just answer it." He encouraged me.

I pressed the receive option and placed the phone to my ear. "Scarlett! What the Hell are you playing at!" My mom called down the phone.

"Hello mother, nice to hear from you too." I rolled my eyes.

"Scarlett I don't want to hear any of your bullshit, get back here now." She genuinely tried to sound threatening.

"Mom, I'm not coming back until you agree to let me come back home and finish high school." I said simply.

"You know we can't do that." I heard her sigh.

"Well then you'll never see me again." I shrugged, knowing she couldn't see me.

"Don't be so dramatic Scarlett, you're not gonna be that hard to find. You'll need money eventually." She said with a hint of smugness.

"Yeah it's lucky I have some." I smirked at Vic.

"Not if we take it out of your bank." My mom retaliated.

"Oh do you think I'm that stupid mom? I took it out already." I rolled my eyes.

"I can't believe you Scarlett, since when did you become this disobedient?" She demanded.

"The minute you threw away your respect for your daughter in exchange for piece of mind." I told her. Silence fell between us.

"Look Scarlett, you can do this for as long as you want. At the end of the day you're gonna realise that you can't survive out there in the state that you're in. One day you'll thank your father and I because you need medical attention Scarlett. You're bipolar and soon enough you're gonna need medication." She ranted. "Do you think Vic's gonna stick by your side when you get angry at nothing? Spend days on end crying over nothing? Obsessing over every little detail? Suicidal thoughts?" My moms words were cutting me deep. "No, he's going to get sick of it and sick of you. I'm not staying this to hurt you dear, I'm saying this because you need a wake up call. If you wanna run off with this boy and live your fairytale romance out for all that it's got then be my fucking guest but once it's done, don't come crawling back to the family who tried to save you." She finished and then hung up the phone.

I pulled the phone down and looked at in disbelief. My mom has never spoken to me like that before. "What did she say?" Vic asked, leaning on his elbows. I looked at him and shook my head.

"Told me to come back now or I'm never welcome." I said softly. Vic's facial features softened.

"What do you want to do Scarlett?" He asked but right now, I honestly don't know.

-

Me and Vic found a motel to stay in the night, it was cheap and grim looking which actually fits our situation perfectly. As the minutes raced on I was beginning to think this was all an awful idea and that Vic made a dumb choice in breaking me out.

We sat down on the bed, staring at the wall in front of us. "What now?" I asked, looking at him. He turned his head and looked into my eyes.

"I don't know." He mumbled, his eyebrows knitted together.

I turned away and looked at the walls. "Are you beginning to think this was a mistake?" I asked, fearing his answer.

"Us or leaving the institute?" I heard him ask.

"Either." I said softly, my voice cracking a little.

"Oh." He said quietly. "I don't know." He mumbled. I looked at my feet, feeling my eyes fill up with tears.

"I thought so." I said and got up off the bed.

"Scarlett what's wrong with you?" He asked, his voice clearly agitated.

I turned around and looked at him. "I don't know, my mind is running a million miles a minute Vic. This day has been a whirlwind of emotions for me and I honestly don't know how to handle them all." I snapped at him. He rolled his eyes at me. "Stop it!" I shouted, making him flinch.

"Calm down Scarlett, you're gonna get us kicked out of here." He whined, lying back onto the bed.

"Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing." I whispered, he looked at me with a sad look on his face.

"Do you wanna go back?" He asked straight up. I gave him a sad look.

"No, I just wanna rewind a month and go back to normal." I said folding my arms across my chest.

"You know that can't happen." He sighed, sitting back up.

"Can you honestly say this is going to work?" I looked him straight in the eyes.

"I don't know but I don't regret it okay." He said standing up and walking over to me.

"But I'm not okay, I don't think I ever will be okay." I mumbled, looking anywhere but at him.

"Things will be okay, we have each other." He tried to reassure me.

"Am I really worth throwing away your family, your friends, your education and your dream for?" I asked sternly. He looked at me with a sad look upon his face, clearly unable to answer the question. "Yeah that's what I thought." I said walking away towards the motel door.

"You were worth it, until you cheated on me." He whispered. I turned to look at him, my eyes filling up with tears.

I couldn't think of a response to it so I just opened the door and walked out, slamming the door shut behind me and opening up the door to my tears. There was a park across the street from the motel so I walked over to it and noticed there was a bench.

I sat down on it and my mind began racing. I need to get out of here, as much as I love him we can't be together like this. I'm ruining his life, he might say it's okay but it's not. He's right, no matter how it's put I cheated on him and I need to just disappear.

The sound of footsteps approaching me made me jump out of my thoughts. I looked up expecting to see Vic walking towards me but my heart raced when the figure turned out to be none other than Dr Philips. I gripped the sides of the bench, my finger nails digging in. "Scarlett." He said softly, stopping in front of me. I looked up at him and frowned.

"How did you find me?" I mumbled. He gave me a soft look at sat down beside me.

"When I heard that your sister was taking you out for a few hours it didn't make sense. You hate her and she you. I followed your sisters car and then saw you drive off with Vic. It all made sense then." He explained, I looked at him with disbelief spreading across my face.

"You're a psychopath." I said shaking my head which just made him chuckle.

"Aren't we all though?" He grinned at me.

"What are you going to do now?" I asked. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. He handed me one and then lit it for me.

"You're gonna come back with me." He stated, I raised an eyebrow and laughed sarcastically.

"What makes you think I'll go anywhere with you?" I asked and then took a draw of the cigarette.

"For one simple reason Scarlett, your boyfriend." He smiled which just made me frown.

"What about him?" I shook my head.

"He assisted in helping you get out of the psychiatric hospital where you were put in for the safety of yourself and others. He can get prosecuted by your parents but I'll also make sure the media and police are on high alert. I mean I can easily tell them that he's manipulating you, he beats you up and threatens you. Who are they gonna believe?" He pointed out. "And I mean I can easily go over there and aggravate him to the point where he'll surely beat my ass up, then I'll get him arrested for assault." He said it as if it was the most casual thing on the planet. "Why do you want to ruin my life this much?" I shook my head.

"People like him go through life getting everything they want, he doesn't deserve you Scarlett." He had a wild look in his eyes.

"So you're giving me no choice really?" I shook my head, taking another draw of my cigarette.

"No you have a choice. Let me ruin his life and then you'll be forced to come back anyway. Or you go back over there and break his heart right now and come back with me." He smiled at me. I felt my breathing begin to get heavy.

"I hate you so much." I mumbled.

"Clock is ticking." He said as he nodded towards the motel. I quickly finished my cigarette and then threw the rest away. My heart was aching as I got up and walked over to the motel room, this was going to be the single most heartbreaking moment of my life.

I opened the door and found Vic sitting on the bed, his head in his hands. He looked up and gave me a sad look, but I didn't falter. "I'm sorry Scarlett." He mumbled, his eyes glossy as if he was going to cry.

I didn't say a word, I just walked over to him and sat down in front of him on the bed, I placed my hands on his cheeks and pulled him into me, kissing his lips softly. I closed my eyes and felt the tears beginning to well up in my eyes. The feeling in your throat when you're about to cry was choking me, making me sob a little. He pulled back and looked at me, confusion all over his face. "I'm so sorry Vic." I mumbled, look into his eyes.

"Why are you sorry, it was my fault." He furrowed his eyebrows, confused.

"No, I'm sorry for what I'm about to say." I sighed.

"What?" He asked.

"Vic I'm leaving you, I can't be in this relationship anymore." I said as quickly as I could without fumbling over the words. He looked at me with a strange look.

"Why are you saying this?" He frowned.

"It's important that we both make the correct choices here." I tried to steady my voice.

"I did make the correct choice!" He snapped.

"But I didn't." I sighed and stood up, he grabbed my hand and pulled me back down.

"Scarlett, you did." He sounded crazy, I don't blame him because I'm breaking his heart here.

I yanked my hand out of his grip. "Vic, don't make this any harder than it has to be." I simply stated, standing up and walking towards the door. He got up and followed me.

"Scarlett, please don't go." He begged, he grabbed my hand again and got on his knees. "You've no idea how much I need you, if you walk out that door then I'll break apart into a million tiny pieces. I can't deal with that." He began to cry. It broke my heart.

I turned to look down at him and I knew the only thing I could do was what he did to me when he had to break my heart for my own good. "Vic I wish I never came to San Diego, actually a part of me wishes I never left the New York mental institute because you've ruined me. The second I let you in you ruined my life." I spat down at him. "Nothing you do or say can change that, my life changed the minute I let you into my heart and I want out." I told him.

He looked up at me, tears beginning to stream down his face. "I love you though." He sobbed, holding onto my hand tightly.

"But I don't love you Vic." I said harshly and pulled my hand away from him, leaving the motel room and slamming the door shut behind me.

I walked over to where Dr Philips was leaning against a car, a smirk on his face. "Is it done?" He asked me. I didn't say a word but just nodded, he got into the car and I followed suit, taking one last look at the motel as it slowly left my vision.

5 years later...

"Scarlett?" A voice pulled me out of my thoughts. "Are you in there?" It asked again. I looked at the boy in front of me.

"Sorry, I was in my own world there." I mumbled, running a hand through my hair.

"You're getting out today." He smiled at me, not a sad or happy one. Just a smile to reassure me.

"I know, how crazy is that." I said with barely any emotion.

"What are you going to do with your new found freedom?" His voice was laced with happiness, probably happy that one of us finally got the opportunity to get out of here.

"Get as far away from this place as possible." I mumbled, looking at him.

"Are you going to look for him?" He asked, his questions beginning to get extremely annoying.

"No, that ship has sailed. I made my bed five years ago so I just need to lay in it." I shrugged, staring down at my cut up arms, fresh and old scars lining my pale white forearms.

"What about the baby?" He questioned, I looked up at him and frowned.

"That child probably has a much better life than it would've had if I stayed with him, Jackson." I mumbled, it was like he was deliberately opening old wounds to test me.

"Being placed into the adoption system isn't good, look at me. I turned out horribly." He laughed, it was kinda sickening.

"There's nothing I can do now." I sighed. "She could have an amazing family now, I could never ruin that for her." I shook my head.

"Scarlett, it's time to get your stuff together. You're free to go." My favourite nurse Stacy walked into my room, I looked up at her with fear in my eyes. I wasn't ready for this moment.

I gathered my things and said my goodbyes. Stacy led me to the entrance and told me to be careful, I was handed my belongings and phone. It was outdated as fuck but it was better than nothing, my parents didn't even care o buy me something new for getting released. Thankfully they charged this piece of shit for me anyway.

I walked out of the building and the San Diego sun hit me like a ton of bricks, a beeping brought me back to reality and I smiled as I seen the car in front of me. I walked over to it and got into the passenger side. "Finally, it's only been like five years." I grinned at him. He didn't say a word but smiled back at me and drove off out of the parking lot, and onto the next chapter of my life.
