You'd Better Hide the Bullets

Don't Leave Me on My Own

"Scarlett, wake up." I heard my mom say softly from beside me. My body reacted and I shot up, completely and utterly startled. I looked at my mom as I clutched at my heart, breathing hard.

"What's wrong?" I asked, sweat beginning to bead on my forehead.

"Go get dressed, we're going somewhere." She told me and then got up and left the room.

I peeled myself out of bed and checked my phone, I had a next text from Vic.
I had a great time last night, thank you for coming with me and I love you so much.

I didn't reply, I honestly can't tell why but I just couldn't. I threw my phone on my bed and got changed into some black skinny jeans, a baggy Blink 182 shirt and a red and black checked shirt over the top and then brushed my hair. I then went to the bathroom and washed my face, brushed my teeth and generally pointed out every flaw I could see in myself. I wonder what Vic sees in me because I'm really nothing special.

Shrugging, I left the bathroom and went downstairs, grabbing my vans from my room first though. When I got to the bottom of the stairs my mom walked out of the living room and walked out the front door. Not a word was said though, I just followed her into her car and then just backed out the driveway.

After twenty minutes of driving we passed through San Diego and began driving through fields, basically the middle of nowhere. "Mom where are we going?" I asked, looking at her with confusion.

"You'll see in a minute." She said, not taking her eyes off the road for a second.

I turned my attention back to the road in front of us and that's when it saw the sign that made my stomach drop. San Diego Psychiatric Hospital. Oh no. "Mom, please no." I begged. My hands were glued to the seat beneath me, finger nails digging into the leather.

She drove into the parking lot and parked the car, she didn't say a word just turned off the ignition and got out the car. I watched her walk around to my side of the car and I quickly locked the door. The idiot that I am forgot that she has the keys and just unlocked it and opened the door. "Scarlett, don't be childish." She warned.

"Me be childish? How can you say that I'm the childish one?!?" I snapped at her.

"The more you fight this, the more crazy you look. Come with me now or some doctor is gonna end up locking you up in there." My mom hissed at me, she does have a point though. I sighed and took my seatbelt off and slid out of the car, slamming the door shut behind me.

My mom led me into the building in front of us and we were greeted at the reception. "Hi, how can I help you?" A woman in her mid fifties I presume, greeted us.

"My daughter has an appointment with Dr Philips." My mom said softly. The woman looked at me and smiled sympathetically.

"Right this way." She told us, we followed this woman into a waiting room area. "He'll be ready any moment now." She smiled and walked off.

I sat down, crossing my arms over my chest furiously. "No Scarlett, I don't want you to act like you did the last time." My mom warned me.

"Trust me I won't, last time I chose to come here this time I was kidnapped." I replied harshly. My mom just shook her head and shut up. Good. I can't trust this woman anymore.

Honestly, I don't understand why she thinks I need therapy because I snuck out of the house to go to a party with my friends. 2 years ago I tried to kill myself because I was lonely and no one liked me. But now I'm being punished for having friends? What the fuck? "Scarlett Jones?" A male voice called out. I looked up and noticed that a dude, presumably my new therapist was standing about 5 foot away from where I was sitting.

"Mom he's like 3 years older than me, how is he supposed to help?" I groaned, she just shook her head at me.

I rose to my feet and walked over to him. "Hello Scarlett, I'm doctor Philips." He extended his hand in front of me, I took it and shook it quickly. He let go and led me into his office. It was like a typical therapist office, sometimes I don't understand place like this. It's as though they try to make it as calm as they can but actually, every little detail is as infuriating as it possibly could be. Like the knick knacks, they're nothing but annoying and pointless. And all those books, I bet this dude hasn't read one single book in this room. "Scarlett, sit please." He instructed me to sit down on the couch in front of him.

I did as he said, being careful of every move I made. I know this game, I've played it before but this time I'm 100% sane. Well I think so anyway. "So why am I here?" I asked, curious to see if he actually knew anything.

"Well, your mother called me up this morning. Usually I don't take last minute clients like this but I had an opening so I thought why not." He explained. Okay he doesn't seem that bad yet, I will still keep my eye on him though. "I got your case file sent over to me, I see you were a patient at the New York City Psychiatric institute." He pointed out.

"So you can read, that's nice." I said sarcastically, folding my arms across my chest in a defensive way.

"You're a feisty one. Not like your file says at all. I had you pegged as a quiet and reserved girl from what I read." He said, staring right at me.

"People change, or so I've heard. Maybe I was always like this and people just assumed I was quiet because I didn't like them." I cocked my head to the side.

"You can put up a front with me for the next hour Scarlett, I still get paid at the end of it." He smiled at me, smugly.

"What are you like 20 or something." I shot at him. He chuckled lightly.

"I'm 24 but my age really doesn't matter, your defensive attitude won't last, trust me I've seen it time after time." He was so confident that it really infuriated me.

"For real, I don't need therapy. My mom is just punishing me for acting out. She's so used to me being such a depressing little shit she forgot that I'm a teenager who is going to do teenager things." I huffed loudly.

"And what teenager type of things have you been up to recently that may have given your mom the wrong impression about your mental state?" He asked, sounding genuinely interested. Another part of their game, they really don't care but they know how to act to make you think they do, to make you drop your guard and think they're different. It's a facade and they're all the same.

"I ran off to New York to find the guy I love, snuck out and went to a party, got detention for punching a girl in school, y'know just general things." I shrugged as if it was the most casual thing in the world.

"I don't remember doing anything like that when I was a teenager." He shook his head and wrote something in the notebook in his hands.

"Maybe you didn't really live then." I said obnoxiously.

"That's a harsh judgement." He said with no emotion at all.

"Well, it's kinda true. You're a therapist at a very young age. Clearly you were very smart in school and done really well, which is good for you but that doesn't leave much room for messing around." I pointed out. He nodded understanding what I was saying.

"I guess you're right, but don't you think you've drastically changed since you moved to San Diego? Do you know why?" He asked, looking even more interested.

"I think it's my boyfriend. Our story is a little... Unusual." I tried to pick my words as carefully as possible.

"How so?" He questioned.

"Well, he was like the popular guy in school whom everyone was scared of, he was an asshole to me when I first moved there then somehow we ended up together. I don't know how or why but it's weird." I shrugged.

"Do you love him?" He asked, I rolled my eyes.

"Yes I do, and he loves me. It's just since I've known him I've been more confident and it's making me do things that the old me would never have done." I explained to Dr Philips.

"Well that's a good thing, always remember that but you have to learn there is a limit. If he's pushing you to ruin your education and relationship with your family, doesn't that make you worry that maybe he's no good for you?" I hate that he said that because I've been beginning to think that myself.

"Maybe but love is confusing, and a part of me thinks he's worth it." I smiled at him, fire burning in my eyes. He gave me a look like no one ever has before.

We pulled into the driveway and my mom sighed loudly. "I'm sorry I dragged you there without warning but I needed you to understand that I'm worried about you Scarlett." She told me. I looked at her and nodded.

"It's okay, I deserved it." I said softly.

"Scarlett, it wasn't to punish you. It was to help you and I really think you should go every week, it'll be good for you." She sighed. I looked at her and bit my lip.

"I'll think about it." I mumbled and got out of the car.

"You can go see Vic if you want, I know you're missing him already." She nodded towards his house. I felt like kissing her but I'm still mad at her.

I basically ran across the street and knocked on Vic's door. The door opened and revealed a hungover looking Vic, he was wearing his boxers and a flannel shirt that was open, revealing his chest. "Oh Scarlett, I thought you were grounded?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"My mom let me come over." I told him. He opened his door and let me in, leading me up the stairs and to his room. I've never actually been in Vic's room.

It was a light blue colour, a few posters for some bands scattered around the walls. Thankfully though it was really tidy, which is a bonus. He climbed into his bed and looked at me. "Come cuddle me." He said with a really cute voice. I smiled and kicked my shoes off and climbed into his bed, laying next to him and wrapped my arms around him, he laid his head on my chest and snuggled into me. "You smell good." He mumbled. It made me smile, forgetting the shitty morning that I had.

"Have you been in bed all morning?" I asked, playing with his hair.

"Yeah, I'm really hungover." He groaned. I giggled, remembering how drunk he was last night.

"Well, guess what happened to me last night." I announced. He looked up at me and shrugged. "When I was climbing into my window my jeans got stuck on a nail or something and I fell, making a huge racket and my mom came into my room." I explained to him. He raised his eyebrows.

"How much shit were you in?" He asked.

"None, until this morning. She pulled a really shitty move on me Vic." I sighed, feeling so betrayed.

"What did she do?" He asked, leaning on his elbow to look at me properly.

"She told me to get dressed, that we were going for a drive. So I did and then we were driving for way too long, leaving the city and then we turned into some psychiatric hospital. I shit myself so bad." I frowned, feeling so scared all over again. "She made me an appointment with a therapist and I had to talk to this dude who is only like five years older than us, about how difficult my life is." I rubbed my eyes with my hands. "It was awful." I breathed out. Vic just looked at me, a soft frown upon his face.

"That is a shitty move." He whispered. "It's okay, it's over now." He crawled up and kissed me quickly.

"It was really scary, I still get nightmares about the time I spent in hospital." I whispered, feeling my eyes begin to water.

He pulled me into his arms and hugged me, I took in his scent. He smelled like mint and beer. "You're here with me now Scarlett, I'll never let anything happen to you okay?" He told me, rocking me back and forth in his arms. And for the first time in my life, I actually believed it.
