You'd Better Hide the Bullets

There She Goes

The front door of my house slammed behind me as I walked through it. I could hear my mom scurry out of the kitchen to greet me and interrogate me on my first day but avoiding that is key. I stomped up the stairs and into my bedroom to find my annoying younger sister. "What are you doing in here?" I asked her, dumping my bag on the bed.

"I wanted to see if you had anything interesting for me to steal but you're so damn boring Scar." She said casually.

"Get out of my room dipshit." I told her. She simply turned on my bed and laid down.

"Alison is gonna be home soon, are you going to continue to make this family fall apart or get over it all." This kid just doesn't take the hint.

"You're like 12, what do you know." I mumbled and sat down on the window ledge.

"13." She corrected as she turned again to face me. "And I know a lot. I'm way smarter than the other kids at school. I just think you need to cut her so slack." Kiera told me as if she was more mature than me.

"Yes when your older sister kisses your boyfriend, the best thing to do is completely forgive her and forget it all." I rolled my eyes.

"Be sarcastic all you want." She huffed, folding her arms across her chest.

"So did you make any friends at school?" I asked her.

"Negatory. I'm like a lone wolf. Don't need anyone else." She acts like she's needs nothing from no one and that really bugs me. She gotta stop the attitude.

"Okay well it's time to leave so shoo." I motioned for her to leave.

"Well it was nice." She fake smiled at me then walked out of my room, slamming the door shut.

Alison wouldn't be home for another hour since her college was an hours drive away from here. She didn't wanna live on campus so she's staying at home. She was originally attending NYU but when we decided to move she got offered a transfer to San Diego state and took it. I really rather wish she didn't though.

About a month ago I caught her at a party kissing my boyfriend of a year, Danny. I was shocked that she would betray me like that and ever since we've been at each other's throats. My mom thinks it's stupid to fight over a boy but I think it's more the fact she fucked me over for what? A really shitty drunken kiss.

I jumped off the widow ledge, putting my iPod on and listening to Sum 41 really loudly. "So am I still waiting for this world to stop hating, can't find a good reason, can't find hope to believe in." I sung loudly along to the music.

A knock at my door gave me a fright and I turned the music down. My mom walked in and sat down on the edge of my bed. "Honey, why didn't you come speak to me when you first got in?" She asked with a sad look on her face.

"Nothing personal. I just wanted to relax for a bit before." I explained.

"How was it?" She questioned.

"Horseshit." I mumbled.

"Scarlett!" She scolded. I rolled my eyes at her. "Why was it shit?" She laughed a little.

"Cause these guys asked me to sit with them at lunch so I did but they humiliated some freshman and so I stopped up for the kid and these dudes are now gonna target me. Great." I faked enthusiasm.

"I'm glad you're not letting them bully you though." She patted my leg. "Now come downstairs, I've got a surprise for you." She told me.

Okay so maybe a surprise will save the day. We walked downstairs and she took me out into the garage, covering my eyes with her hands. "Are we nearly here yet cause you suck at guiding me." I laughed nervously, hoping she wouldn't let me walk into anything.

"SURPRISE!" She shouted and pulled her hands off my face. In the garage next to her car there was an Audi A4 2004. I nearly fainted at the sight of it.

"No way." I said with utter shock. "How the heck did you guys afford this?" I asked with disbelief.

"Well we've been saving for awhile for a car for you Scarlett so once we moved here we realised that you'd finally need one and we had extra money left over after we sold the house. It's an early Christmas present let's say." She winked at me. I pulled her into a hug.

"Thank you so much mom." I could feel the tears begin to build up in my eyes.

"So we move halfway across the country and Scarlett gets a car? What about me?" Kiera walked into the garage.

"Oh you're the spoiled child, you get everything you ask for anyway." I rolled my eyes at the obnoxious teenager in front of us.

"True but this ain't fair you know." She huffed.

"Look your sister needs a car plus it just means there's another person you can get to ride you about town like your own personal taxi." My mom pointed out.

"You've got a point there mom, I see what you've done here." Kiera squinted her eyes at our mother. "You bought this car so Scarlett would have to take me everywhere instead of you. Good move, but she drives like a maniac." Kiera nodded.

"I don't know what you're talking about." My mom shrugged as she handed me the keys. "Go take it for a spin." She told me.

"I'm coming too." Kiera announced.

"Okay well go get my iPod from my room first." I demanded and she did as she was told. Usually she'd need convincing but maybe she's just trying to not push her luck.

I got into the car and started it, Kiera appeared a few minutes later and handed me the iPod. "Nothing too emo though." She warned me.

"My car, my rules." I simply stated.

"Oh great, I'm gonna be here listening to My Chemical Emos and wanted to die." She groaned.

"I think A Day to Remember is appropriate for today's plan." I said as I scrolled through the artists section. All Signs Point to Lauderdale came on shuffle and I laughed. "Very fitting for this day." I told Kiera. She just simply nodded, understanding what I meant.

She acts like she's totally solid but the kid has no idea how much more difficult it's gonna get. She will be at high school next year and I won't be there to help her out. I feel bad but she likes to pretend that nothing can touch her, I hope she can keep it up to avoid being a victim. "Is high school as bad as you say?" She asked randomly.

"It's horrible, not gonna sugar coat it but yeah. Why?" I looked at her, studying her face. She had longish blonde hair to her waist and a simple complexion.

"Because I dunno if I wanna grow up. Watching you and Alison fighting recently has scarred me a little. What if I don't like boys? What if I'm gay? What if I don't know how to make friends? What if I end up liking My Chemical Romance and have an emo phase?" She asked frantically. It made me laugh which in return earned me a glare.

"Look Kiera, life is difficult. Boys suck and so do girls. It doesn't matter who you like because at the end of the day until you find a person who doesn't completely fuck you over, love sucks. That's the truth of it. And as for friends, the right ones just happen." I told her as I stopped at a light. "The emo thing is inevitable though. We all go through it and you'll love MCR just like me and Ali did when we were kids." I explained. She looked out the window and sighed.

"I want you to make up with Ali please." She mumbled. I didn't know what to say but a Dunkin' Donuts came into view.

"Let's go to DD and get some smoothies." I suggested as I parked the car in front of the shop. We got out and walked into the store. Kiera wasn't watching where she was going and slammed into someone.

"Sorry." She mumbled and my attention was brought to the scene. I realised she had bumped into that kid Mike from school.

"Oh hi Scarlett." He said sweetly. "And who's this?" He asked, talking to Kiera like she was a child.

"My sister." I said dryly. He nodded as if my tone was totally normal.

I turned to the counter and we ordered our smoothies. "Who was that?" Kiera asked as we waited.

"An asshole from school." I sighed. She nodded and didn't press the matter.

We got our smoothies and left the store and getting back into the car. I was about to drive off when suddenly a figure appeared at me window. I looked to see who it was and my stomach dropped when I seen it was Vic. He stared in at me with a strange smirk on his face. I rolled the window down and his smirk grew bigger. "Wow, nice car Scarlett." He said sarcastically.

"Thanks, just got it." I played back. I didn't want my sister to see this jackass bring me down.

"It's great, hey do you mind giving me a ride?" He asked rudely. I looked at my sister and she just shrugged.

"Where?" I asked sternly.

"Oh it's just the guitar shop about ten minutes from here, you see my brother. And this is a funny story. My brother just stole my car as a joke and I have to get back to work. I seen you walk over to this car and you know I wouldn't ask unless I really needed it." He told me, trying so hard to seem nice.

"Oh that's a real shame. I'm sorry to hear that." I said, voice oozing with fake sympathy.

"Would you mind?" He asked again, sounding a bit more desperate.

I rolled my eyes and huffed loudly. "Fine but you'll have to give me directions." I sighed. He winked at me and jumped into the back of my car. Kiera pressed play on the iPod and the Plot to Bomb the Panhandle came on.

"Good choice short stack." He said to Kiera.

She turned around and flipped him off. I couldn't help but laugh. "Kiera, be nice to the asshole." I winked at her.

"Now that's not a nice thing to call anyone." Vic groaned from behind me.

"I don't think you have much of a say in this since I'm the one saving your ass here." I pointed out.

"Take a left here." He mumbled.

The rest of the journey was pretty awkward. I don't understand why I did it, after the way he spoke to me earlier and the whole day including him in general. But maybe this is a chance to get him off my back? I hope. "Well we are here, get out." I said dryly.

"Okay okay, I'm going." He got out the car and then came to my window again. I rolled my eyes and then rolled the window down again. "Thanks for the lift Dollface." He winked at me and walked away.

"What an asshole." Kiera sighed. I looked at her and laughed. She got that one down to a T.
