Stung and Employed By The Wasp

I Knew You

“We’re home!” Ghost chuckled from the passenger seat.

I pulled the car up into the front parking spot of the motel, and put the car in park.

“Let’s hope Zoey’s still home as well.” I said, looking at the clock and seeing that it was 11am.

We made our way into the main office, and were met with boxes upon boxes stacked up.

“Why do you have to leave now? Do you not want to meet the new owners with me?” An older gentleman asked.

“I’ve got a feeling I won’t like them. I’m sure you’ll be fine though.” A female voice replied.

That seemed like a rather uncalled for comment, until we finally saw the face behind the voice. The grin on my face couldn’t be hidden, as my body filled with glee.

“Ah, you must be Mr. Cerulli, my name is Bernie and I am the owner.” He introduced himself cheerfully.

“What an honor to meet you, and may I ask who this lovely lady is?” I asked.

“This here is Zoey, she was a resident here, but she also helped me out a lot. You won’t find another girl as helpful and as sweet as her.” Bernie told us.

There was no confusing the instant fear that was so obvious in Zoey’s eyes at the moment. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, and she looked like she was ready to just bolt like hell to get out of here.

“Oh dear, I owe you an apology to start off with for such short notice of the ownership changing. We do own another complex though that we would happily take you in at. You could live there, free of charge.” I offered her.

“No. I don’t need your help.” She spat, grabbing a set of keys from the counter and running out the front door.

“My goodness, I’m sorry for her behavior. She’s normally not like that at all. I suppose she’s just under pressure though.” Bernie apologized to us.

We all heard the engine of a car rev up, and I knew I had to go stop her from leaving.

“You know, I’ll go and talk to her myself. Hopefully I can make things right. Mr. Sola here is a business partner of mine, and he will get your payment in place.” I told him, quickly shaking his hand before I walked calmly out the door, to then sprint over to where Zoey’s car was.

I managed to get right behind her car just before she shifted it into reverse.

“Get out of my way.” She snarled.

“Unfortunately you’re going to have to run me over in order to leave.” I said.

“Don’t tempt me.” Zoey snarled.

I walked up the the passenger door, pulled out the metal ring I stored all of my keys on and slipped the duplicate of Zoey’s key into the car which popped the door right open.

“Much better.” I sighed, sitting down in the seat and resting my head back against the headrest.

“How the fuck…?” She gasped.

“Oh, the key? We got it copied one night when you were sleeping, we actually all have copies of it.” I told her.

“What is wrong with you?” She growled.

“There’s nothing wrong with me, I’m not the one running from what I need and want.” I told her.

“You’re fucking psycho! How many times do I need to tell you I don’t want anything to do with you.” She cried, obviously frustrated.

“Shh, you’re going to give yourself a heart attack by constantly getting so mad and riled up. Just hear me out for once ok? I get why you’re mad, I really do. You keep telling me though that you’re not special, and that you couldn’t figure out why I chose you over everyone else, and go the lengths we’ve gone to get you back.” I told stated, wanting her to calm down, before she got too pissed off.

Zoey looked over at me, and just glared like hell, before she turned off the car and slammed her hand against the top of the steering wheel.

“You get 3 minutes to give me one fucking good reason why you haven’t left me alone yet, and why you dropped 3 million to fuck me over, and then that’s it. You can’t convince me, I’m gone and you better not follow me.” She growled.

“I don’t even need a fully 60 seconds.” I told her.

I pulled out my phone and pulled up a PDF file I had, it was of an essay that I found about a year ago online. A beautifully written paper written by none other than Zoey.

That was the first time I had ever heard her name.

I handed my phone over to her and let her scroll over it, there was obvious confusion on her face.

“I wrote this 18 months ago, when I was exploring some personal things. It’s stupid.” She shrugged, obviously a little bothered by my bringing this up.

“Stupid’s the last word I would use to describe this, Zoey. This is fucking art on paper, I’ve been a part of this dynamic for years, known people who have been a part of it since before you were born, and this is still the best written thing I’ve read on the topic.” I told her.

“Once again, you’re giving me way too much credit.” She groaned.

“You might not be giving yourself enough.” I stated, resting my hand on her leg.

She pushed that off in less than a second.

“I’m having a hard time understanding why you would still be such a pain in my ass over something I wrote, especially since right after I wrote it I took myself completely out of the scene.” She lied to me.

I knew that wasn’t true, that was one more reason that I was so enthralled with her, it was how I knew of her after she had posted that piece of writing.

“You and I both know that’s not true.” I told her.

“Fine, you got me there. Right now though..I am out of it, and I just want to live my life quite frankly without you in it.” She replied.

Her facial features softened, and she almost looked sad. It was a very different feel that I was getting from her right now, than I had gotten the past week I knew her.

“Strike two.” I whispered, knowing that wasn’t true either.

“Get out of my car.” She begged.

“Alright, but just know that we’ve met before Heather brought you in. I know deep down if you really think about it, you’ll remember.” I cooed.

“I don’t know you.” She said.

“Strike three.” I muttered to myself.

“Here’s a key to the house, whenever you come to your senses feel free to come back. I’m in my office most days all day long, so you can find me there. Just please give it some thought, ok?” I pleaded with her.

“Please get out.” She muttered.

I did as she wished and got out of the car, before I shut the door I had to give her a little warning.

“Just so you know, Josh is kind of looking for you himself. So you might want to stay off his radar, or get back before he has the chance to catch up to you.” I warned her.

“Great.” She rolled her eyes.

“Be safe.” I said, tapping the door.

Without saying another word she pulled out of the lot and disappeared out of my sight at an incredible speed.

I had a feeling she’d come around fairly soon.

Walking back into the office, Ghost was wrapping up the transaction and writing the check to Bernie, getting everything finalized. The two of us helped him get all of his boxes packed into the back of his truck.

“Thank you for everything. This place doesn’t cost a third of what you paid for it, but I really appreciate it. It’ll give me a good start to retirement.” Bernie thanked me with a bit of a laugh.

“This place is actually priceless to us, it’s a lot more than a building to us.” I explained.

“I’m glad! Take good care of my baby.” He told us.

“You have our word.” Ghost promised him.

“Can I actually ask you one more question?” I asked him.

“Of course, you can ask me anything.” He replied.

“Did that young lady have somewhere to go?” I wondered.

“Zoey? She told me she had a plan, but wouldn’t disclose what exactly that plan was. She’s a pretty headstrong girl. You won’t find another girl as sweet and as loyal, but man she can hold up her own quite well.” Bernie chuckled.

“Yeah, I sensed that. Thank you for that.” I replied.

“Absolutely. Well, I better get going. Perhaps I’ll see you one day down the road.” Bernie said, shaking our hands.

We waved to him as his truck drove off into the distance just like Zoey’s had done.

“So, did you get to talk to Zoey?” Ghost wondered.

“Yes, I showed her little stubborn ass the paper she wrote and she simply brushed it off by saying she wasn’t in the dynamic anymore. Then she retracted and said she was in it after she wrote it, but now she’s not. Which I know from my own experience with her isn’t true.” I explained.

“So let me get this right, you know it was her when you went to those parties, but she didn’t know it was you.” Ghost asked.

“Exactly, but I know she’ll figure it out. The Zoey I knew before will figure it out.” I assured him.

“Let’s hope so. I’m positive the Zoey from the past, and the Zoey I know won’t be too pleased if Josh gets to her first.” Ghost stated.

“You’re right. Let’s head back to the Nest.” I sighed.

Now we just waited.
